2 Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost Prayer Before Worship: God of salvation, you rescued the Israelites at the edge of the Red Sea. Rescue us from the things of this world that threaten our lives and livelihoods, so that we might place our trust in you once more as we gather now to worship you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. 9 BRIDGES TO HOPE As part of our God s Work Our Hands Sunday, we wrote notes to inmates in the Nebraska penal system. We also encouraged people to bring small kitchen/household items for Bridges to Hope, a ministry to help inmates transition back into society by helping them get and set up apartments, homes etc. If you didn t get a chance to bring an item, there is still time! We will collect bowls, dishes, place settings, personal hygiene items, etc. until the end of September. JAM for JAM! JAM be jammin and jellin the whole month of September. We welcome the congregation to join JAM this month by collecting plastic bottles of jam and jelly for thescottsbluff/gering PupPack/CatPack program. NO GLASS PLEASE! TRADITIONAL WORSHIP WEEKENDS MOVING TO NEW SETTING ON OCT. 7 TH At its meeting in September the Worship Committee decided to switch to Setting 3 out of the ELW for worship services on Traditional Worship Weekends. For many, this setting will seem like an old familiar friend as it is one of the settings Calvary used out of the old LBW (or green) hymnal for many years. Even if you don t know it, we think you will find it easy to learn. Please join us on Oct. 7 th as we reintroduce this new (yet familiar) setting. 9

12 God s Promises Bring Hope: Rescue at the Sea September 29-30, 2018 God is with us in unexpected and powerful ways even when we are afraid: The Israelites saw the Egyptian army in pursuit and grew afraid, but God heard their cries and delivered them through the Red Sea. Even as God delivered the Israelites in unexpected and powerful ways, so too God promises to be with us. Daily Bible Home Sunday Read Exodus 14:5-7, 10-14, God s people are delivered from slavery in Egypt into freedom, crossing the Red Sea. Discuss ways in which God has delivered you. Monday Read Exodus 15:1-10 Moses leads the people in a song of thanksgiving. Write a list of ten things you are thankful for. Say a prayer of thanksgiving, naming the ten items on your list. Tuesday Read Exodus 15:22-27 God provides for the Israelites in the wilderness, turning bitter water into sweet water. What bitter feelings or attitudes do you need to ask God to make sweet for you? Wednesday Read Exodus 16:1-16 God provides bread from heaven. Watch a video of bread baking online, or visit a local bakery. Reflect on all the work that goes into making the bread. Consider baking a loaf of bread yourself and share it at mealtime. Thursday Read Exodus 17:1-7 Moses miraculously provides water by striking a rock, proving once again that God continues to provide. When taking a shower or washing your hands, or brushing your teeth, say a prayer for those who do not have access to clean or drinkable water. Consider going to elcagoodgifts.org to make a donation to a water project. Friday Read Exodus 17:8-16 When Moses got weary, the community literally helped support him. Who can you come alongside to help or support through a crisis? Saturday Read Exodus 19:1-25 The Israelites reach Mount Sinai. We often speak of mountaintop experiences moving events in our lives that often give us clarity or insight. Think of a mountaintop experience in your life. What insight did it provide? 12
