2 Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost Prayer Before Worship: God of promise, you set a bow in the sky to remind us that you will never again forsake your creation. Make us ever mindful of your promise, and assure us of your mercy that living in your grace we might share your promises with all your beloved children. Amen. We gaze in wonder at the beauty of your creation and marvel at stormy skies transformed with the vibrant colors of a rainbow. 2

3 Like Noah and his family, we praise you for this everlasting sign of your love and care for the whole creation in your desire to preserve and not destroy life. Lord God, you preserved Noah, his family, and the animals from the waters of the flood and cast a rainbow in the sky to remind us of your promises of grace and forgiveness. Through baptism, you promise that same forgiveness, forever making us your children. Help us to live into the freedom of our baptism by the faith you daily renew in us by your grace and forgiveness. 9 WELCA MISSION PROJECT for September is Cooperative Ministries Back Pack Program. This program helps provide food items to students who may find it difficult to find food over the weekend. Watch the tidings and bulletins for needed food items each month. Peanut butter is always needed. Cash donations are also welcome and 100% of the donation is used to purchase food. FOOD PANTRY item for September is SOUPS and the BACKPACK item is SMALL CEREALS.. Containers are located outside Fellowship Hall. Thank you for your donations. Imediately after worship we will all come together and enjoy a Harvest Succotash Dinner and show our support for the Nebraska Synod prison ministry by writing words of encouragement to inmates in facilities across the state. Please bring small kitchen items, place settings, measuring spoons, spatulas or hygiene products, soaps, deodorant, shampoo etc. for Bridges to Hope, the transitional ministry for those being released from being incarcerated. 12 Flood and Promise September 8-9, 2018 We can trust that God cares for creation, and will never again destroy the earth. Humankind, and indeed, the entire creation, was declared good by God, but humanity turned toward evil. God decided to start over with Noah, but promised never again to destroy the earth. God created a covenant with a tangible sign the rainbow to remind us and God that instead of destruction, God will find another way. Daily Bible Home Sunday Read Genesis 6:5-22; 8:6-12; 9:8-17 Through Noah God uses an ark to rescue Noah and his family and some animals when the entire earth floods. In what ways does God rescue us today? Reflect on God s promise in this story. Monday Read Genesis 9:18-29 After exiting the ark, Noah gets drunk. This is an odd story from the Bible. Why do you think it was included? What can we learn from it today? Tuesday Read Psalm 93 This psalm praises God, perhaps referencing the floods and waters of Noah s story. Say a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the resource of water; pray for those who may not have access to clean or drinkable water. Wednesday Read Psalm 104:1-9 Another psalm, this one a prayer of thanksgiving, referencing God s creative energies. Do something creative today: write a poem, draw a picture, sing a song, etc. Thursday Read Psalm 104:24-35 Continuing the reading from yesterday, the psalmist sings of how God provides for all. Set aside and donate some non-perishable food for a local shelter, food pantry, or other service agency that collects food for those in need. Friday Read Genesis 11:1-9 Out of pride, humanity attempts to build a tower to reach the heaven, but God thwarts their plans. Has God ever thwarted your plans? If so, why do you think God did? Saturday Read Genesis 11:26-32 Abram settles near the land of Canaan. Canaan would become the home of the Israelites. Reflect on what home means for you is it a place, is it among people you love, is it your physical house? Pray for those for whom home is not a safe place. 12
