WEDNESDAY NIGHT CLASS Nancy Steele is leading a class on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. that will take a look at some of the religions around the world. This will hopefully give us an overview of the major religions and possibly receive information on some of the cults that are around. Please join us each Wednesday back in the Sunday School rooms. SENIOR RECOGNITION SUNDAY MAY 15 TH. Congratulations Grads! 9 WELCA MISSION PROJECT FOR MAY The WELCA mission project for May is to SHOWER our church kitchen with some of the following items:, Mr. Coffee filters, 8 oz. paper cups (please NO styrofoam) for water/juice, dish soap, paper towels, napkins, instant lemonade, salt, pepper, coffee creamer, foil, saran wrap, zip-lock quart and gallon bags, and artificial sweetener. Items may be placed in the kitchen OR in the box next to Pastor Chris office. Cash donations may be placed in the tan Designated Giving envelopes in the pews. Please mark Women s Mission Project on the envelope. Possible Outreach Ministry to Western Nebraska Community College Pastor Sheryl is looking for people who might be interested in helping to get a Lutheran Campus Ministry program off the ground at Western Nebraska Community College. Pastor Sheryl and our Synod s Nebraska Lutheran Campus Ministries Board (of which Pastor Sheryl is a member) would like to gauge what kind of interest and support there would be for developing a Campus Ministry Site here in Scottsbluff. In the call process a year ago, there were a handful of people who had expressed interest in an outreach ministry to the Community College happen. If you were one of those, or if you think this just sounds like a good idea, please join Pastor Sheryl, interested members of Rejoice Lutheran and Jon Fredericks (the Executive Director of NeLCM) for lunch (everyone will be responsible for purchasing their own lunch) on May 22 nd at 11:30 a.m. at the Scottsbluff Runza meeting room where Jon will answer any questions you have and work with us to strategize getting such a ministry going. IT S ALMOST BAR-B-QUE TIME Calvary s 17 th Annual BBQ is scheduled for June 4 and June 5. Tickets to sell are in your church mailboxes in the narthex. Also, please check out the sign-up sheets located by the church office for items needed. Please turn in your proceeds to the office ASAP. Thank you in advance for your support. NEW MEMBER SUNDAY May 22nd. Please join us on May 22nd during worship when we will be receiving several new members into our church family. 10 SUNDAY, MAY 15TH IS PENTECOST SUNDAY, so everyone is invited to WEAR RED, the color of the Holy Spirit in celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit in our lives and yes, you, may wear your Husker Red! Also, for the gardeners in our midst, feel free to share any of your red geraniums during worship that day and then take them home to be planted in your garden as a summer long reminder of the Holy Spirits presence in your life. WANTED: POWERPOINT OPERATORS: Requirements require a desire to serve God, a willingness to pay attention during worship, the ability to operate PowerPoint presentations and/or push buttons! Training provided. Adults are encouraged to apply, See Pastors Sheryl or Chris if you are interested in this position. ROADSIDE CLEAN-UP The Lakota Center will be doing their annual roadside trash pick-up on May 22 nd. We encourage you to support their effort by joining them! Lunch will be served at 12:15 PM. Following lunch we will proceed to the road site and help clean up the designated stretch of road. Come help the Lakota Center give back to the community and show our support for ministry taking place there. ATTENTION KIDS! 14 Some Thoughts on Today s Scripture Readings Celebration of the Ascension of Our Lord May 7-8, 2016 In today s gospel the risen Christ ascends into heaven and his followers are assured that the Spirit will empower them to be witnesses throughout the earth. The disciples were told to not gaze up into heaven to look for Jesus; we find his presence among us as we proclaim the word and share the Easter feast. We too long for the Spirit to enliven our faith and invigorate our mission. Acts1:1-11 Before he is lifted into heaven, Jesus promises that the missionary work of the disciples will spread out from Jerusalem to all the world. His words provide an outline of the book of Acts. Psalm 47 God has gone up with a shout. (Ps. 47:5) Ephesians 1:15-23 The risen and exalted Christ reigns over the entire universe. The author of Ephesians prays that we would be given the wisdom to comprehend this and display it through love toward others. Luke 24:44-53 On the day of his ascension, Jesus leaves his disciples with a commission, a blessing, and a promise of the Holy Spirit.
