Hymn As We Gather At Your Table ELW #522 Music Public Domain; text 1989 Hope Publishing Co. OneLicense.net A *Confession of Sins/Assurance of God s Forgiveness (All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as we begin) Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Silence for reflection and self-examination) Faithful God, You have called us to places unknown and have promised to be our guide. Yet we prefer to find our own way and do our own thing, taking credit when things go well and blaming others when they don t. We resist putting our trust in you. We forget your covenant with us. And we suffer for it. Turn us back around to walk where you are leading. Forgive us for wandering from the path. In Jesus name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. *Kyrie page 184, vv. 1 & 4 3
*Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Faithful God, you remained fully with Joseph even when he sat long years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Help us to see that you are always with us in the midst of our trials, that we might live faithfully in your world; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. GOD S WORD SPEAKS TO US First Reading: Genesis 39:1-6a Pew Bible p. 36 Psalm 105:1, (Read responsively) 1 O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples. 16 When he summoned famine against the land, and broke every staff of bread, 17 he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18 His feet were hurt with fetters, his neck was put in a collar of iron; 19 until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD kept testing him. 20 The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free. 21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his possessions, 2 2 to instruct his officials at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom. Second Reading: Genesis 39:6b-23 Pew Bible p. 36 The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God *Gospel Acclamation Page 188 Alleluia, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 5 *Gospel: Matthew 5:11-12 Pew Bible p. 4 Response after the announcement of the gospel: Glory to you, O Lord. Response after the gospel reading: Praise to you, O Christ. Kids Sermon Sermon Angie Hinze Pastor Chris (Silence for Reflection and Meditation) WE RESPOND TO GOD S WORD Hymn Canticle of the Turning ELW #723 Music Irish traditional; text 1990 GIA Publications, Inc. *Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 5
*Prayers of the Church: Each prayer petition ends with: Trustworthy God hear our prayer. The prayers conclude with:..in Jesus name. Amen. *Sharing of the Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. (You are invited to share the peace of Christ with one another) Offering Offertory God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending ELW # text ren the Hymns Society, Hope Publishing Co. Music Public Domain OneLicense.net A *Offering Prayer Let us pray. You have showered us with blessings too numerous to count, O God, and your mercies seem to know no end. Help us to see our lives through the lens of abundance and not scarcity, rejoicing in what we have rather than pining after that which we do not. Receive these gifts as a sign of our gratitude for all that you have done and continue to do for us. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION *The Great Thanksgiving p. 190 *Holy, Holy, Holy.. Page 190 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. 6
*Words of Institution *The Lord s Prayer p. 191 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, and ever. Amen. *Invitation to Communion In Christ s body and blood, God renews his covenant with us. Come and receive assurance of God s love and forgiveness. Lamb of God (sung) p. 191 Distribution Music Rhonda Boettcher Distribution of Communion: Christ is truly present in the Lord s Supper with gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. All are invited to participate in the Lord s meal. (Communion will be served continuously at two stations in the front of the church. WHITE GRAPE JUICE and GLUTEN FREE wafers are available. Just ask the server. Children who are not yet communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing.) *Post-Communion Blessing *Post-Communion Prayer You never forget your covenant, O Lord, your promise to preserve us and not to harm us. Be present with us through this taste of mercy we have received the sign of our Savior s body and blood. Bring us close to you, that we might go out to the far corners of your wide earth, nurtured, and inspired to proclaim your message of deliverance. Amen. 7

God s Promises Bring Hope: Joseph s Hope September 22-23, 2018 God s presence and goodness bring hope and new possibilities: Even though Joseph s life keeps going from bad to worse, God never abandoned him. God is with us, too, even (and especially) when things get bad. Daily Bible Home Sunday Read Genesis 39:1-23 Joseph is imprisoned, but God does not abandon him. Pray for all those who have been unjustly imprisoned. Monday Read Genesis 41:1-13 Pharaoh has some strange dreams. Think of a problem in your life that you are having difficulty figuring out. Find a trusted friend or family member and talk through your problem perhaps they can help you see it from a new perspective! Tuesday Read Genesis 41:14-45 Joseph interprets Pharaoh s dreams, becoming one of Pharaoh s most trusted confidents. Look up the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat there are many videos on YouTube and other websites. Watch or listen to some of the songs, and reflect on how they tell the story. Wednesday Read Genesis 47:1-12 Joseph presents his family to Pharaoh, and provides his family with food. Pray for countries that are suffering from famine or another natural disaster. Thursday Read Exodus 1:8-14 The Israelites have continued to dwell in Egypt, but a new Pharaoh comes into power and enslaves them. Pray for those who have experienced loss or grief. If you know someone who has recently lost a loved one, consider giving them a call. Friday Read Exodus 3:1-17 Moses encounters God at the burning bush. God sends Moses to free God s people. The burning bush is one of the most vivid images of God in the Bible. Make a list of other ways God appears in the Bible. What are your favorites? What are some ways you think God appears to us today? Saturday Read Exodus 5:1-9 Pharaoh punishes the Israelites, increasing their labor, in response to Moses request for Pharaoh to set the Israelites free. What are some of the things you are holding onto in your life that perhaps you should let go? How is your holding onto these things perhaps making life harder for you? Pray to God for insight. 12
