8 WELCA MISSION PROJECT FOR AUGUST The WELCA mission project for August is DOVES. They provide a 24 hour crisis hotline and shelter where those trying to escape abuse may find refuge. The shelter is in need of non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies including brooms, mops, buckets, paper towels, and sponges. Other items needed: dishes, pot/pans, silverware, kitchen utensils, toys, books, puzzles for the kids, sanitary products, shampoo and toothpaste, hair brushes and personal items. No clothing. Donations may be placed in the box provided by Pastor Chris office or taken to the center. For more information see Nancy Steele. Thank you for your help. JAM starts Wednesday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. Sunday School starts September 11 at 9:00 a.m. (Rally Sunday) God s Work, Our Hands Sunday September noon Since this is the 15 th Anniversary of the events of September 11 th, 2001, we have taken the opportunity to invite our neighbors, the National Guard, to lunch! We will host them for a Pot Luck dinner beginning at 12 PM on Sunday the 11 th. We are asking the congregation to supply side dishes as the main dish (chicken & roast beef) and au gratin potatoes will be catered. This also happens to be the Guard s normal training weekend, so they will come in two shifts. We will host the first shift at 12 Noon, then at 12:20 the second shift will arrive. At that time we will break for a short service of remembrance for those who lost their lives in the events of 9/11, and to give thanks for First Responders and the Guard for their part in the response to the events of 9/11. There will be a free will donation taken to cover the cost of the catered part of the meal. (Members of Calvary only!) 8

11 Some Thoughts on Today s Scripture Readings Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost August 21, 2016 Remember the sabbath day. Call the sabbath a delight. This is the Lord s day, and the Lord will do for us what the Lord does: feed us, forgive us, help and heal us. Rejoice at all the wonderful things God is doing. First Reading: Isaiah 58:9b-14 The Lord promises those who have returned from exile that where justice and mercy prevail, the ruins will be rebuilt and light will rise in the darkness. It is a day for new beginnings. Psalm 103:1-8 The LORD crowns you with mercy and steadfast love. (Ps. 103:4) Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-29 Using images of Moses from the Old Testament, the writer presents a striking vision of the new covenant of God made possible in Christ. There is no longer fear; only awe in the new promise in Christ into which we are invited. Gospel: Luke 13:10-17 Jesus heals a woman on the sabbath, offering her a new beginning for her life. When challenged by a narrow reading of the sabbath command, Jesus responds by expanding sabbath work to include setting people free from bondage.
