2 2 A Note from Toni... Greetings to all! It is my hope that you are enjoying the Horizon s Bible Study of the book of Hebrews, Cloud of Witnesses, as much as I am. At FPC-Commerce, our study group has just completed Lesson 5, which addresses being in community with the traditions of the past. The author reminds us that the stories in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, have helped form communities of faith through the ages. The 11 th Chapter of Hebrews gives us a quick run-down of many of the faithful, beginning with Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham, and continuing through Joseph, Jacob, Moses and Rahab. At that point, the author of Hebrews declares that there is not time to tell about all these people of faith, but he lists a few more: Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets. He acclaims that through their faith they conquered kingdoms, administered justice, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames and escaped the sword. Others were raised from the dead but some were persecuted, put in prison and even put to death. The author of Hebrews also says that all of these were commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. The last verse of Hebrews states, God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. As our Circle study continued through the lesson, we mentioned many persons who had inspired us in our faith, such as family members and church members who have passed on. The lesson ended on a joyous note as we thought of these saints and their legacy. Many of you knew Kay Jordan, one of our PW saints, who just recently passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Along with her many other PW leadership roles, Kay was also co-chair of the Grace Presbytery planning committee for the Synod of the Sun PW Gathering which was hosted by FPC-Ft. Worth in July, Even through her treatments and pain, she continued to be a faithful worker for the Kingdom of God. Presbyterian Women was one of her passions, as was mission. She will be greatly missed. So let us remember Kay and other saints we have known as we keep the faith and continue to spread Christ s message through our energy, hospitality and love. I hope to see you at one of our PW spring workshop meetings in April. Please bring a friend (or two) and join us! 5 PWs in the News... Twenty members of the PW Coordinating Team, for Grace Presbytery, met January 20, 2018, at Flower Mound PC, where the pastor Dr. Lucia Kremzar welcomed us with coffee, tea, juice, muffins, a delicious Fajita lunch, Girl Scout cookies and Valentine napkins! Name tags and place cards were beautifully printed to assist our members in communicating with one another during the meeting as we all had come from different church locations around the Presbtery: Fort Worth, Waco, Mesquite, Denton, Kemp, Commerce, Mabank and Flower Mound. Plans were made for activities/speakers, missions and projects for the 2018 & 2019 years, including an overnight, two day retreat to Camp Gilmont on October 19-20, A new Historian, Eva Riggs was introduced, minutes were read, lists of new callings for missions was circulated and God's Promise: I Am with You was announced as our next Bible Study. Toni Deaton, our Moderator, led us in a well organized, Christ candle centered gathering with sweet prayers offered by Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Pense for an end to violence, government leaders guidance, health in aging, sickness and loss, disaster and hunger relief missions globally, nationally and locally, and travel safety home. Respectively submitted by Nancy Merritt Brandimarte PW Co-Ordinating Team members 5 St. Andrew, Denton, celebrated with Christmas Music by Peggy Capps after a successful Market for Mission Sale led by Pat Edell, selling jewelry and household ceramics raising $453 for our local and global mission projects. 7 See you there? The Gathering Quest August 2-5! 2018 Churchwide Gathering of PW in Louisville, Kentucky Presbyterian Women Churchwide Gathering will be held August 2 5, 2018 in Louisville, Kentucky. That is also the year that PW celebrates its 30th anniversary! Louisville is often referred to as Derby City, thanks to historic Churchill Downs and the beautiful horse farms that dot central Kentucky. That s why the 2018 mascot for the CWG is...lilly the Filly! If you want to order the Gathering bandana (22 x22 ) and vibrantly colored with a large sunflower in the center order item PWR18030 from $7 plus shipping. We suggest you save a dollar a day until Gathering for expenses. And be sure you are on our list so you won t miss one bit of news about the Gathering! patricia.longfellow@pcusa.org and urge all your friends to get on the list, too. PW 101.3: The Mission Pledge: PW s Annual Fund Presbyterian Women s annual fund is the Mission Pledge. The Mission Pledge makes possible PW at all levels of the church: from local and regional to national! (More about PW in the presbyteries, synods and churchwide in the next newsletter.) PW is independently funded; that means that the gifts you give to your church or to the PC(USA) do not provide for Presbyterian Women. Gifts given to Presbyterian Women, however, do support the work of the PC(USA) in multiple ways because PW supports the work of the PC(USA) in multiple ways. Financial gifts to the Mission Pledge, PW s annual fund, are often collected in PWC circle meetings. But there are other ways to give (online, by check, and through estate planning). Presbyterian women are always encouraged to give as we are blessed! (See for more information.) Women s Conference at MO Ranch Have you made your plans to go to the 2018 Women s Conference on June 1-3? Registration is already open and there is only one session, so it will likely fill up fast. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Jackie Roese, the founder and president of the Marcella Project, a ministry committed to reshaping the view of women in the church through Scripture-based teaching, training and dialogue. News from you Submit articles from your women s group for the Innovator to Editor Karen Groman. 7
