Contact the Parish Office to register for Baptismal Preparation Class. Classes are held the first Thursday every month at 5:30 p.m. in the Faith Formation Center. At least one Godparent must be a Confirmed, practicing Catholic in good standing. Matrimony: At least one party must be a registered, practicing member of either parish with at least 6 months active attendance at Mass. The Parish Office can provide Marriage Preparation information and paperwork. Ministry to the Sick & Homebound: Contact the Parish Office to arrange for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick or to receive Holy Communion at home. Funeral Mass/Burial Rites: To arrange for a funeral Mass or memorial service, contact the Parish Office or ask your funeral director to do so.

3 Pastor s Corner Worship and Spiritual Life I once came into contact with an interesting bumper sticker. It read, My conscience must be solar powered because it never seems to work at night. I can t remember what sort of car it was on but my assumption is that it was one that belonged to someone that just liked to let loose and have fun after work every once in a while. At first glance the sticker merits quite a chuckle, but upon further review, causes one to really think. Throughout history, the motifs of light and darkness have played a significant role in society: darkness representing all that was hidden, evil, or distorted within oneself or society; light, on the other hand represents goodness, purity and truth. Think about it: in those old Disney cartoons when the angel and the little devil come and sit on Donald duck s shoulder, the angel is dressed in white and the devil in black or red. Also in the Lord of the Rings movies, Galadriel, the elf from the forest, and Arawen, the elf Aragorn wants to marry, are both shrouded in white while Sauron is a dark abyss or wears the darkest of armor. Christ Himself comes as the light of the world and casts off all darkness: Whatever is said in the darkness will be brought into the light. In this context then, the bumper sticker speaks to our Christian journey. The owner of that car did have a conscience that was solar powered because without the light of Christ they were lost. It is true for any of us; whatever part of our life we hide from Christ will be distorted and destructive. Why do you think that it s not until addicts hand their life over to God that they begin to get better in the 12-step programs? It s because God alone heals. In the end, the bumper sticker provides us with a fitting meditation: what areas of our life need light in order to survive, and what areas need light in order to be destroyed? After all we know that in the kingdom of God the night is as light as the day because The Lamb is the light of the city of God. At least I think that s how the song goes. Christ is the only 24-hour light source and He is all natural, which is good for our Northwest mindset; we try and go green all year long. All joking aside, once we hand everything over to Christ we don t need our conscience anymore because love will lead us in all things. Sometimes I wish that I could just laugh at the bumper sticker and move on like everyone else, but praise God I didn t. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs. This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she groans in travail (Rom 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters. This week I am sharing information from A New Solidarity with Creation Catholics Acting on Laudate Si, Pope Francis encyclical on creation and climate change. SAVE THE DATE: Laudato Si A Mass Celebrating the Season of Creation will be held Saturday, September 22 nd at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Cathedral, 804 ninth Avenue, Seattle. Join with Christians worldwide to commemorate the Season of Creation, the time between September 1 st (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) and October 4 th (feast day of St. Francis of Assisi). We invite all people of faith to celebrate the joy which the Earth shares with us. Let us come together to thank God for the richness that is in the Creation which we share. Father Michael G. Ryan will preside at the Mass. All are welcome. At the website CatholicClimateCovenant.org you may read and have the opportunity to sign the U.S. Catholic Climate Declaration, which supports the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops statements regarding Climate Change. This document cites statements from Pope Paul VI, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis as well as the USCCB. The following is an excerpt: Climate change is an urgent moral issue because it compromises the future of our common home, threatens human life and human dignity, and adds to the hardships already experienced by the poorest and most vulnerable people both at home and abroad. We teach that governments exist to protect and promote the common good, and that the climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all. (Laudato Si, 23). 6 Religious Education Announcements If you are planning on getting married within the next year, please contact Beth Rosales for information on preparing for this Sacrament Registration for Elementary Faith Formation is open! Please sign your children up as soon as possible. If your child needs to begin or continue preparation for the First Sacraments (Reconciliation and Holy Communion), they must attend these classes if they do not attend our parish school. Men s Monastic Weekend The 63 rd Annual Seattle Men s Retreat Monastic Weekend with the Benedictines of Westminster Abbey, Mission, B.C. is Scheduled for August Hundreds of men from many parishes in the Archdiocese of Seattle have been revitalized in their faith throughout the year by participating in this event. Take part in the Benedictine chant of the Daily Office in the Cathedral and listen to talks by the Retreat Master. The weekend commences with dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 10 th, and will conclude at the Sunday Noon meal with the Community. The cost is $145.
