What is your pearl of great price? What is the one thing you would give your all for? The pearl grows in an oyster because a grain of sand gets into the shell and irritates its membranes. A beautiful pearl grows to protect the delicate oyster inside the shell. Hidden in the story of an oyster is an understanding of why Christians sometimes go through difficult times. As Christians, sometimes we feel we should be blessed with shelter, provision, health and well-being. We wonder why it is that we face difficulties like others. When we face hard times we wonder why these things happen to us and where we failed. While Romans does teach us that all things work together for good we need to remember that means God s good and not our own. Sometimes God uses these difficult circumstances to strengthen our faith, to teach us our dependence on God and others, and to deepen our spirituality. God can even use the shortcomings in our life as a call to care for others similarly burdened. For me, the pearl of great price is our faith and reliance in God that can be an anchor in the midst of the storm to keep us grounded in difficult times. Friends and family may abandon you, possessions wear out, popularity wanes, heath fades, strength abates -- but in the end, the Lord abides. Let us invest all our heart, soul, mind and strength in our relationship to the Lord. Let us be faithful in our prayers, presences, gifts, service and witness. Difficult days will come and others may abandon us, but God always remains by our side. Blessings for a wonderful August! Pastor Rick Denison

Prayer Emphasis Week of August Prayer for missionaries Week of August For those at Leisure Week of August For those returning to School Week of August Those who doubt their faith Waggoners Prayer Beads As reading has become less popular, visual and tactile ways of communicating have become more popular. Prayer beads are not meant to be a superstition but a guide to your prayer life that helps you focus your mind on God and be able to listen to God s still small voice. Taking clues from the ancient Byzantine Church and a variety of other faith traditions these beads are meant to help us focus on who God might be calling us to be, what God might be calling us to do and how God might be directing us to be transformed. Its focus is on repetitive and memorized prayer/ scripture. The instructions below are but two examples of the many ways they can be used. The idea is to focus on the call of Christ on our lives and the transforming power of God s word and promises using many things we probably have already memorized. An Example of Personal Examination: This method helps us to focus on how God might be calling us to grow and be transformed in our personal life. We begin each prayer session by touching the cross reminding us of Christ s sacrifice for our forgiveness and his call to Pick up your cross and follow me. There are 33 beads this reminds us of the number of years our Lord walked this earth it s a reminder that our faith likewise should be incarnational lived out in the world. Jesus was the word of God made flesh likewise this reminds us that our lives might be the only witness to Christ many we meet might see. The prayer session begins: 1. Touch the cross: Recite Apostle s Creed remembering what we believe. 2. Touch the large bead: At the Large beads we pray the Lord s Prayer remembering that when Jesus s disciples asked him how to pray, Jesus gave them this example. The Lord s Prayer is rooted in a daily prayer recited by all Jewish people in Jesus day The first set of 10 small beads self-examination and confession using the Jesus prayer, Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. This serves as a way not only to confess our sins but to be open to how God calls us to change and grow. Large bead once again recite the Lord s prayer. The second set of small beads praising God for his provision we are reminded that although we are sinners and deserve to die God gives us each day our daily bread. The prayer we use to thank him is simply the beginning of the Psalm 23. Because the Lord is my shepherd I have everything that I need. Large bead the Lord s prayer. Third set of small beads praising God for the gift of forgiveness we are reminded that when our love for God fails, God s love remains constant. The prayer we use is simply the beginning of John 3:16. For God so loved the world he gave his only son. You may go around the circle several times for me three times around makes a nice 20-minute prayer session. 8. Exiting the time of prayer touch the Large bead above the cross again I praise God for this special time with Him using the Gloria Patri: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen. A Variation to pray for the mission of Waggoners Church. This is basically the same as described above with different prayers on the small beads. First set of small beads prayer to love God - -using Deuteronomy 6:4 a prayer faithful Jews were asked to recite every day and teach to their children. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. Second set of small beads prayer to love people using Mark 12:13, Jesus second great command, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Third set of small beads prayer to be a blessing using the beginning of the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, Lord make me an instrument of thy peace, where there is hatred let me sow love. There is considerable freedom on how these beads can be used with favorite scripture and hymn verses. The above are examples Pastor Rick has used. This may be one tool you can use to focus your prayer life.

Signup sheets have been placed on the clipboards. Many volunteers are needed each year in a variety of different areas.serving food, dipping ice cream, helping to direct car parking, etc. Don t forget to reserve the date & come on out rain or shine for some good old-fashioned fun, food, song & fellowship! 11 th Annual Gospel Fest Waggoners UMC Pavilion Saturday August 19 th 4 PM Food service begins 5 PM Music Begins Waggoners United Methodist Church at 1271 Longs Gap Rd, Carlisle will be hosting their 11th Annual Gospel Fest on Saturday, August 19th from 4 9 PM. A variety of food including BBQ, chicken corn soup, hotdogs, sausages with grilled onions and peppers, pies and ice cream will be available for purchase starting at 4 PM. The concert, starting at 5 PM is free of charge (Good Will Offering taken) and will feature Chapter VII, The Mellott Family, The Millers, Victory Express and Keeping It Simple. The concert will be held rain or shine at the church pavilion with extra seating under 2 large Festival Tents (bring your own lawn chairs). Shuttle service for the elderly and handicapped is available from the parking area to the Fest Tents. This is an event you will surely NOT want to miss! May our praises today connect with heaven and unite our hearts with the sound of eternity. Lord, may the gifts of our voices and melodies of our instruments move with the work of your Holy Spirit. May we bring light into dark places, restore hope and vision to all who are oppressed, and well-being and health to all those who suffer. Today Lord, we give you our worship. May it be a platform for you, Father God, to touch our lives afresh and build your church.

Everyone is welcome!** If anyone would like to help coordinate a Missions Outreach Project please contact Shelly Lilly at We are always looking for new ideas and ways to minister in our community and beyond. Give the Gift of Life! OPEN COMMUNITY KICKBALL Sunday, August 2 PM On Sunday, August 6 2 PM Waggoners UMC will be sponsoring the 3 rd OPENCOMMUNITY KICKBALL GAME at the Ballfield. This event is open to the community and all ages are invited to play. We will continue to have games on the 1 st Sunday of every month throughout the summer. Devotionals are available to the right rear of the sanctuary. We simply ask for a one dollar contribution to offset the cost. Place your offering in the basket, which is near the stand containing the devotional booklets. Children s Church On the 2 nd and 4 th Sunday s all children are invited to participate in our new Children s Church. Here they will learn familiar Bible stories and teachings with fun filled activities. Children s Church is held down-stairs in the Fellowship Hall and the children will be excused to attend immediately following Pastor Rick s Children s Sermon in the Sanctuary. 7 The Waggonette page 7 Ongoing Events Women s Prayer Breakfast is held every 2 nd Saturday of each month from Sept. May at 7:30 AM. The women, led by Nancy Hoffman, study a selection of Christian Contemporary literature. This year s study is from Liz Curtis Higgs s book Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them. After the lesson, the women enjoy breakfast in the Bridge Café. ALL WOMEN of the church are invited to attend. Men s Prayer Breakfast is held every 4 th Saturday of each month from Sept. May at 7:30 AM. The men, led by Pastor Rick, study an interesting selection of Christian contemporary lessons. This year we ll be using clips from the Andy Griffith show to let Andy, Barney, Opie and Aunt Bea teach us Christian truths. After the lesson, the men enjoy breakfast in the Bridge Café. ALL MEN of the church are invited to attend. Church Fellowship Breakfast is held every 3 rd Thursday of each month at 9 AM at the Fairground Diner, 1111 Spring Rd., Carlisle. Everyone is invited & pays for their own meal. Weekly Bible Study is held every Mon. night at 6 PM & every Tues. morning at 9 AM from Sept. May. Everyone is invited as Pastor Rick leads us in interesting & uplifting Biblical teachings. Worship Team practices at 6:30 PM the Wed. prior to the Sunday on which they sing. Everyone is invited to join. Senior Choir, led by Stephanie Keifer, has been temporarily discontinued. Everyone is invited to join. Youth Choir, led by Stephanie Keifer, practices every Sunday at 10:15 AM in the Social Hall. All preschool thru elementary aged children are invited to attend. The Youth Choir usually sings every 4 th Sunday during Worship Service. Manor Care Bingo is a ministry of 4 or 5 volunteers on 2 teams who help out at Manor Care Nursing Home the 2nd Thursday of each month (Jan. thru 7:15 PM. Team #1 and Team #2 alternate months, beginning with Team #1 in Jan. Anyone interested in helping should contact Rick Mellott at or Ernie Miller at Time for Tots is a preschool program that meets from Sept. to mid-may. They meet in the Nursery every Monday from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. This program offers young children a socially, emotionally and educationally motivating experience. If you have a 3 or 4 year old who would like to join the class, contact Cindy Bear at Sunday s at Waggoners Church Bridge Café Join us every Sunday morning at 8 AM in the Bridge Café for coffee, pastries, breakfast items & fellowship. They also sponsor a new outreach ministry each month. Everyone is welcome and monetary contributions are always appreciated to offset our costs. Thanks! Sunday School All classes are in session on Sunday (Sept. through May) at 10:15 AM. *Nursery class - for children birth to 4 years of age & meets in the room adjacent to the restrooms. *Children in K 9th grades meet in the social hall. *Youth in 10th - 12th grades gather in the Bridge Café. *Adult Class #1 meets in the front of the sanctuary and studies the International Sunday School Lesson. *Adult Class #2 (Meet Me At The Bridge) This class meets in the Bridge Café & studies are based on a variety of contemporary Christian literature. Ongoing Projects Giant Gift Card Program Purchase cards from our church and Giant will donate 5% back to the church. Contact Chuck Bear Soup Ministry Make soup at home and place in the freezer in the kitchen for shut-ins. Make sure you include the date made on your soup.
