2 Page 2 July 2, 2017 Dear Parish Family, Some people think that teens don t work hard. Some people think that teens don t care about their faith. And some people think that if there were teens that like their faith and liked working hard, they sure don t know how to have fun. Some people have never experienced the week that I m enjoying. At the time this bulletin was printed, I was still with 300 teens at Catholic Heart Work Camp who are praying, serving the poor and elderly throughout the Plattsburgh area, and having a blast doing so. It was hard being away from Canton for my official first full week (but I knew you were in capable hands of Fr. Todd Thibault and the rest of this great staff). As you can imagine, keeping up with 300 teens is a challenge. To do so, I relied on the grace of God and more than my share of coffee. Speaking of coffee [gratuitous segue], I d like to try something with you folks. I want to have coffee with you. Even more so, I want to get to know you. Would you be willing to pull together a group of friends and/or neighbors and have me over to your home? I m thinking of groups of 8 or so. This will give me a chance to get to meet you and to hear your thoughts about St. Mary s parish. We ll wrap up with a prayer, and after 45 minutes or so leave better caffeinated, connected, and blessed. Here s a way I think this could work well: I m going to block out some time each week for the next couple months. Terry and Paul will have all the available times for Coffee with the Pastor. If you call the rectory and ask for some possibilities, we ll happily help you out. Of course, the offices will be closed on Monday and Tuesday for Independence Day celebrations, so you may want to try us later in the week. In the meantime, have a joyful Fourth of July as we celebrate the God-given freedoms we enjoy in this great land. - Fr. Bryan Stitt Surviving Spouse Friendship and Support Group Support Group meets the first Thursday of the month July 6th at The Meadows Restaurant at 9a.m. Please join us. For more information and for restaurant planning purposes please call: Lita Maroney ; Mary Ames ; Ivy Martin ; Carolyn Shelmidine BINGO is held every Monday night, at 7pm 30 Miner Street Bring a Friend! NOTE: Due to new state law, those under 18 years of age may attend Bingo with an adult but may NOT play bingo. Daily Prayer This Week The gospels offer us encouragement this week because they are so filled with imperfect people struggling to live out their lives. The invitation to us this week comes from the heart of Jesus to ours: Follow me. How do we open our hearts more fully to that invitation? In our daily prayer we can name the desire we are looking for and ask Jesus for help. Each morning as we open our eyes to face the day ahead, we can simply ask Jesus for the courage to follow him. Lord, give me the strength today to accept your invitation to follow you. Living that invitation each moment will take patience and courage and I ask you for it because I can't supply it for myself. And, Jesus, when I fail and snap at my family or forget to be compassionate with my spouse, grant me the humility to apologize for that. Let me remember how much you love me and let me share that with everyone who comes into my life today. In the smallest moments in the background of our day we can remember that desire and offer it to God. As we walk down the street or cook dinner or run an errand we can speak to our Lord as we would to a friend. It doesn't take more time, only more focus. Some days it seems like I am being tossed on a boat in the darkness, Jesus. Part of me wants to be saved but another part wants to run from you. I'm not always proud of how I lead my life and sometimes I am afraid to be alone with you. Guide me through this darkness, please. At the end of the day, we can take a few moments as we get ready for bed: Thank you, dearest Lord, for your presence in my life today. I felt you with me in some of the more difficult moments. Thank you for being there. "Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer" from Creighton University's Online Have blessed and rest-filled Fourth of July The parish office will be closed July 3rd & 4th. It will reopen on Wednesday, July 5th at 8:00 am We often tell our children to clean up after themselves, but when it comes to the environment, it seems we are happy for them to clean up the mess we have created. The evidence is clear: we need action and we need it now. An average American generate 3.5 lb. of garbage a day. Suggestions to reduce that trash when grocery shopping: consider the packaging and how much trash it will create, i.e. individually - wrapped items, non-recyclable containers, aerosol cans. At the checkout use a reusable bag or ask for paper that is biodegradable. The New Website s here! The New Website s here! Check out St. Mary s new website at If you have any questions or submissions, please contact Terry at the office
