2 From Our Pastor 1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Thanksgiving 3 We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. 4 Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring. 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4 (NRSV) As the sun beams brightly for longer hours in the evening, the lawns turn green, and the flowers and gardens we planted blossom with the abundant fruit of the seeds sown our thoughts turn to other activities. Summertime is as the song puts it the hazy, lazy days time for us. My parents sent me to camp each year and truthfully I miss those days of wading in streams, campfire songs and smores, and just having tons of fun in the sun. Most of schedule time off for a vacation at the beach, in the mountains, across the country and the world. We seek rest as well as to see and experience new people and new things. We seek to have more 3-day weekends off while the weather is good and we can enjoy being out and about. Some of us enjoy staycations with honey-do lists of projects, visits to friends and relatives nearby, and just having some time off to BBQ and drink a fresh made lemonade. Some of us may undertake armchair traveling taking some time to see movies and/or watch shows on Netflix we have been wanting to see but didn t have the time. Most of us we have our summer reading list beach books, hefty historical novels, biographies, anything we have been waiting to have some time to sit and read. Since the tablets and E-readers have come into our lives we no longer have the physical stack of books beside our beds; but whether hardcopy or digital, our books still call out to us to be read. And hopefully summer schedules give us some time to enjoy the writer s words teaching us and expanding our imaginations as well as our understanding of the world and each other s humanity. In the church this summer season is called, the green season of spiritual growth in our relationship with our Triune God growing through the lessons we hear over the early summer in worship. In July we hear the stories of Jesus healing, sending out his disciples into the world, describing his shepherding of us in the gospel of St. Mark. Then we turn to St. John s gospel witness in August of Jesus and bread. We also grow by continuing to slog our way through the Bible reading program, The Word Way. This is going to get harder over the summer, but remember we are only reading a chapter a day, so let s keep at it. We will take off June and July for discussion, but meet on the last Sunday in August after worship. If you are like me and getting a little behind, or maybe even a lot behind, just pick up the reading schedule where the date is and move forward; but keep in mind to read all of the book of the Acts of the Apostles and all of the Psalms in our reading schedule. These are pieces of scripture we never hear in worship, so reading them is well worth catching up. We have moved into Deuteronomy deutero meaning second, and onomy meaning law. So you will have déjà vu for sure. But on the other side we have moved into Romans, a great book by St. Paul who was preparing for his visit to Rome. Finally in mid-july we move into Joshua, then in August move into Judges. These books contain great stories of how powerfully God works in the everyday person s life giving them courage, strength and above everything faith in the face of dire circumstances. So keep reading and growing in and come with questions on August 26th. Remember to keep reflecting on who God is in these stories and what the Old and New Testament books on our reading schedule have in common along with the Psalms that are interspersed. The reading schedule is configured this way for a reason. During the summer days, find a shade tree, a glass of ice tea, a good book like the Bible so that as St. Paul says to his beloved congregation in Thessalonica your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing In Christ s love, Pastor Kathy Page 2

3 Pastor Kathy s Surgery in July/August Yes, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am having yet another surgery! This time they are replacing the right knee, and yes they use a saw and hammer. The surgery is scheduled for Monday, July 30th and I hope to be back by Labor Day provided I am driving! You will have two new supply pastors while I am out: The Reverend Marty Young who is retired; and The Reverend Michael Fischer who is the chaplain at Country Meadows. As of this publication date, I do not have all the coverage needed for funerals, but will have that by the time I leave for the surgery. I hope to have hospital visits covered by the Health Ministry Home Communion teams as we did for prior surgeries.. Please know that while I am home, you are welcome to come and visit. My address and phone number are in the directory, so feel free to call me and we can set a visit around the PT. I thank you in advance for holding me in your prayers to our Heavenly Father, it means so much to me and to Him. In Christ s love, Pr. Kathy KITCHEN COMMITTEE There will be a Kitchen Committee meeting on August 29,2018. Please plan to attend. We will be discussing the Bazaar plans for this fall. We have some major decisions to make. Thank you for considering what we want to do with this project. Bring your ideas to the meeting. Diana BLOOD DRIVE Our blood drive on June 10 resulted in 8 people attempting to donate blood and we were able to obtain five pints of blood. That is enough to save the lives of as many as 15 people! Thank you to all who attempted to donate. Keep in mind our next blood drive will be at Brookside Park during Salem s Fall Festival on Saturday November 10. Please consider joining us and helping those in need in our community. Thank you. Ellen Hostetter Page 3

7 SYNOD ASSEMBLY REPORT The Lower Susquehanna Synod s 31st annual Synod Assembly was held on May 31-June 1-June 2, 2018, at Messiah College. The central theme of the event was Eradicating Hunger One Relationship at a Time. On May 31, Day of Equipping, Bishop Dunlop shared how, over the last five years, our congregations have been moving in a new direction. The emphasis of the R3 Renewal plan in which our congregation is deeply involved is the renewing of our sense of God s mission for us. The keynote speaker that afternoon was Mikka McCracken, World Hunger Director for Planning and Engagement for the ELCA. She commended us for our efforts in providing for the hungry and challenged us to eradicate hunger in the LSS, taking our witness one step further by feeding the hungry as we have been fed by Christ. Forums addressing eradicating hunger were presented. Pastor Matthew Best s session on identifying hunger and food insecurity was very informative. During Synod Assembly on June 1, resolutions adopted included one of Gratitude to Rev. Thomas McKee on his upcoming retirement in 2019, a resolution to end Homelessness and a resolution to adopt the 2019 budget of $2.7 million. On June 2, the Day of Feeding, volunteers packed meals for over 190,000 people. This food was sent to Haiti and all over the United States wherever needed. Our sincere thanks are extended to Pastor Kathy and the congregation of Shiloh Lutheran Church for the opportunity to represent our congregation as voting members at the Assembly. We urge YOU to make a commitment to attend the next LSS Voters Assembly as it is a very inspirational and educational experience shared in fellowship with our Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Carl E. Flandermyer Terri R. Stetler Sunday Page 7 On the 20th of May, Pastor Jorgensen presented a Renewal Forum during Sunday School. The Renewal Team used the red color theme of to prevail in the decorations and delicious treats they created.

9 Finance report Income declined slightly in May. We did not quite meet our budgeted amount. We took in $11,015 for the month. We spent $17, Our expenditures are just slightly over what we anticipated. We budgeted for $77,981 and spent $79,821. But we have a long way to go. Can we keep the momentum going? We need to remember that our budget includes a deficit between income and expenditures. To make up the difference, we took $5,000 from our Thrivent- Moyer account in October and $5,000 from our Waddell and Reed-Moyer account in March. In May we took $3,000 from the Rental Property Account. During May, the congregation gave $91.00 to the Nursery School Fund, and $45.00 to New Hope, bringing us to $411 for the year. We are hoping for $ each month for New Hope. Give a small amount each month to help reach our goal. Your generosity helps many people in need. We can always count on you to support special causes. Thank you for your continuing support of the congregation. Janet Smith, treasurer Back to School Time: Mt. Royal is again hosting a Back-to -school event. In addition to giving away backpacks and school supplies, they also provide fun activities for the families. This year s event will be held on August 8. We will be collecting school supplies during the month of July. Please bring your donations by August 5 so I can get them to New Hope by August 6th. Look for the box in the narthex. The New Hope Ministries Dover Backpack Program provides students with easily prepared, nutritious foods to take home on weekends. About 42% of the students in the school district rely on reduced price or free lunches. Backpacks for 250 students are packed weekly at New Hope Ministries by volunteers from the Dover School District and then distributed to the students at each of the schools. Every Friday afternoon, students bring a backpack of food home to provide nutrition over the weekend. Providing food for the backpacks costs about $500 per week. Will you consider a gift today to New Hope Ministries to support the Dover Backpack Program? During May you donated $45.00, 17 pounds of toiletries and 68 pounds of food to New Hope. Our goal for New Hope is $ per month to make up for what we used to give from the budget. For the first five months of the year, we have contributed $ to New Hope. Janet Smith Page 9
