1 THE LUTHERAN VISITOR St. Paul Lutheran Church 721 Twelfth Avenue Huntington, WV The Reverend Jennifer Obermueller, Pastor Phone: (304) The Mission of St. Paul Lutheran Church is to celebrate and proclaim to all the saving grace of Jesus Christ through word and deed. September 2013 We Welcome All Including Children-- to the Gift of Holy Communion God claims us in baptism and loves, forgives, and gives faith as a complete gift. St. Paul Lutheran Church affirms this welcome of God to all, especially at the Lord's Table. St. Paul Lutheran Church affirms that all people, of any age, are welcome at the Lord s Table and offered the elements. Christ welcomed the little children and did not allow anyone to hinder them. Children who are able to chew and swallow can be full participants in the Lord s Supper. The Lutheran church does not insist on cognitive understanding of the mystery of baptism by the recipient, but the Holy Spirit can nonetheless create a relationship of faith through water and the promise of God. So, too, faith is nurtured through the bread and wine (body and blood) of the sacrament of Holy Communion. All are welcome, all are included, as we are all one body in Christ. There is no command from our Lord regarding the age at which people should be baptized or first communed. Christ s command is to do this and promises his presence for us. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) affirms that admission to the sacrament of the Lord s Supper is by invitation of the Lord. At the same time our church is clear that catechesis (teaching) continues throughout the life of the believer both for children and for adults. But it is not--and can not--be a pre-condition for receiving the gift of Holy Communion or any other grace-filled gift of God. Parents can use their discretion for deciding whether or not their children will receive the elements. But we encourage all people--including children and adults--to come to receive at the table of the Lord. Pastor Jen Sign Up to Bring Bread for Holy Communion We are continuing with a sign up in the main entryway to bring bread for Sunday worship and for other services where we share Holy Communion. You can bake or buy bread. Suggested recipes for bakers are near the sign up, but store-bought bread is great, too!

2 The purpose of the St. Paul Social Ministry Committee is to serve those in need, both in and outside our congregation. If you know of needs, or if you would like to help, please contact Pastor Jennifer, Linda Schneider, or Anna Mummert. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, Matthew 25: 35 & 36 THANKS FOR THE UNDIES! St. Paul congregation members responded well to a plea from Cridlin for new undies for their clients. This need was made known to the congregation in late July. In August, $ was donated, and will be used to purchase undies! Thank you from the Social Ministry Committee and Cridlin Food & Clothing Pantry. FOOD OF THE MONTH Food of the month giving was amazing in August! We have recovered from the summer slump early this year. With a goal of 50 cans of ravioli for the month, the total donated was 101!!! St. Paul is awesome! Thank you!!! September s food of the month is cans of chili. Let s rock it again! CRIDLIN NEEDS There are always people in need in our community; therefore Cridlin continues to ask us for help. At this time, the pantry s specific needs are for the following: CHILDREN S CLOTHING (especially girls sizes 2T 8) these can be gently used! Please place in (or near) the bin in the hallway near the church office, or you are welcome to drop them off at Cridlin (corner of 5 th AVE & 11 th ST) between 12:30 & 2:30, Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. COLLEGE STUDENTS & PARENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS! PLEASE HELP Social Ministry by giving us addresses of St. Paul college students for the upcoming school year! You can call or Judy Pease or Anna Mummert, or write a note and give it to one of them. We can t help support our students if we don t know how to reach them! Thank you! Page 2

6 Our Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Representative Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Eric Weimer and I am the Thrivent Financial representative serving St. Paul Lutheran Church. An educator for most of my adult life, I joined Thrivent almost two years ago because I felt called to help Christians live financially wise and generous lives and thereby be better stewards of that which God has given them. I am a member of Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, in Hurricane, and enjoy the opportunity to provide local, personalized service to Lutherans and their families in the Huntington-Charleston area. I live in Hurricane with my fiancé Tonya and our three dogs, Abby, Brady and Ginger. My stepson Roman will soon graduate from WVU with his bachelor s degree in chemical engineering, and my stepdaughter Naomi works at Amazon.com in Huntington and is building her professional photography business. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio where I graduated from Lutheran High School West I moved to West Virginia in I very much enjoy living in our beautiful state, surrounded by many hard-working, faithful friends. God willing, I plan to be here, with Thrivent, for the next 20 years, serving you, your children, and your grandchildren. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a Fortune 500 membership organization committed to helping members achieve financial security and give back to their congregations and communities. The largest fraternal benefit society in the United States, Thrivent has a more than 100 -year history of Lutherans helping Lutherans. More than 30 years ago, my parents wisely purchased a life insurance policy for me from what was then Lutheran Brotherhood. Ever since, at every opportunity, I have placed my insurance and investment business with Thrivent. As important as my faith is to me, it is equally important that I place my trust in a faith-based organization like Thrivent. I m excited to be working with St. Paul and look forward to getting acquainted with many of you personally. I m also looking forward to sharing information about the fraternal benefits that Thrivent Financial offers. If you have any questions about Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, please feel free to contact me. Thanks, and God bless you all. 7 I do not like driving at night; I never have. I am always nervous, convinced that some object or creature is just waiting by the side of the road ready to leap out and injure me or those I love, or cause all sorts of mayhem in my life. There may be some Boogie Man factor at work here, too. I don t like the dark; even today, I prefer to sleep with a night light or the TV on. Recently, on a long trip back from Austin, TX, I was forced to face what I feared. We had traveled for hours and hours, and I knew we would never be home by sunset. We were traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway beautiful by day, but dark at night. PITCH DARK. The sky was cloudy, and the road was unlighted. I reacted the same way I always do---heart rate increasing, breathing faster and more shallow, and gripping the wheel so tightly my hands fell asleep. I was in a panic, and even with Jon beside me, I never felt more alone than on that long dark road. Then, just on the horizon a mile or more away, I spotted the twin dots of another car s headlights! Soon after, there was another. I was not on my own out there; other travelers were making a journey similar to mine, and I could spot them because of their light! I relaxed and felt assured the journey had been long, I was tired, but I was not alone. What assurance that was! And so I ask you shouldn t our lives be just like this every day? Shouldn t we always be shining Christ s Light in our lives so that those who are weary and afraid can see us in their darkness and be reassured that they are never alone? Don t hide your own Light under a bushel. Display it proudly and always so that you can give someone that same blessed assurance that those tiny pinpoints of light gave me on that dark night in Kentucky. God has blessed us richly---let s always share our gift! Wilma Anderson Shepherding God, you are the source of life and health. Surround those who struggle with illness or other difficulties of life and bring wholeness and healing to: Ladonna, David, Britney, Julie, Sister Patricia and Alicia.
