Pastor s Reflections I have a Fitbit that I bought with Christmas money two years ago. For me, this device is a prime example of technology working to help us out. The device I have registers my heart rate, number of steps I take, food intake, amount of sleep. I can set a goal for the number of steps I take. On and on and on with modules I am sure I haven t even touched at the present time. I like this Fitbit because it helps me to be healthy. With the Fitbit and a program through my health insurance I have lost 25 pounds since the beginning of the year. I am happy about this because I have more energy. I need more energy to keep up with the 8 year old in our house. I also need more energy to keep moving forward in mission and ministry here at St. Paul. I am also happy about it because I am no longer taking a pill to regulate my blood pressure. One of the other features I use daily is the notification to get up and get moving when I have been sitting too long. This helps me move more and I need to move more given that I do much work sitting down during the week. I do this walking/ moving in the sanctuary during the week. I have just recently started praying around all the pews as I pass them in my walk around and around the sanctuary. I also can picture the people who sit in each pew on a regular basis. I pray for you, too, in my walk around the space. The other day I asked our Adult Forum how many pray on a regular basis. Most of those gathered raised their hands. When I asked how many read their Bible on a regular basis not many raised their hands. I found this interesting. I then wondered about what makes us spiritually healthy/ fulfilled. Is it as simple as being disciplined in reading our Bible? Is it in daily prayer conversation with God? Is it worship attendance with our fellow brothers and sisters in the faith? Is it in giving of our time talents and our treasures? As your pastor I would say that list is a place to begin. Michael Foss, an ELCA Pastor in Iowa has written extensively on discipleship. Here is what he says about discipleship: Discipleship is the habits of the soul that open us up to the wonder and mystery of God s active presence in our lives. Maybe you know of other habits of your soul that open you up to God s wonder and mysterious presence in your life. I can t help think about camping ministry. A gem that engages all of us as we go away to experience God s mystery and active presence. This month we will celebrate with four young people as they affirm their faith. I pray they continue to see the wonder and mystery of God s active presence in their lives. Pray for these young people. Pray and help them as they go on this journey. Blessings and Peace as we journey in faith together, Pastor Kevin <>< 2

The sanctuary lamps or eternal flames are the red lamps that shine before the altar of sanctuary in our church and also in the Muhlenberg Chapel. They represent several things to the people of the church. Some say they indicate and honor the presence of Christ. Others say the burning lamps show that the light of Christ always burns in a sin-darkened world, and still others that it symbolizes God's eternal presence, which is why it is never extinguished, except on Good Friday. We need your help to keep these lamps shining and reminding us of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you would like to sponsor the lamps for a month, please sign up in the narthex. Cost is $12; your dedication will appear in the Sunday bulletin. Thank you! In John 8:12 Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. He that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." FATHER S DAY SCHOLARSHIPS This year we are offering you the opportunity to honor the important men if your life by giving to the Camp Luther Scholarship fund. This fund is used each year to help out our families who are sending their kids to camp. St. Paul strives to pay half of the camp tuition for each child who attends. If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund in honor of or in memory of the men of faith in your life, i.e. your father, brother, uncle, etc. please fill out the form below and put it in the offering plate along with your check made out to St. Paul. Please write Camp Luther Scholarship on the memo line. There is a suggested donation of $10. A list of donors and recipients will be listed in the bulletin on Father s Day. FATHER S DAY SCHOLARSHIP In Honor of In Memory of By 3 Donations must be received by June 10 in order to be printed in the bulletin. Please make checks payable to St. Paul Lutheran and write Camp Luther Scholarship on the memo line.

A note from Jill... In reflection of Winter and patiently awaiting the true arrival of Spring, I can see the analogy of transition in our weather to the transition of death and resurrection in His light. The simple truth is that His light is always present whether in the heart of winter, the moment of the last breath or in death, the beginning signs of Spring or the empty tomb or simply in all of us who share His word, love and good news! We had a beautiful Easter service. The church was filled with the love and the light of Christ and the Holy Spirit. Our job is to keep it filled. The youth have come back in full swing & full spirit of spring. If you forget what that energy is like, please come visit us on Wednesday evening at 6:00pm for dinner and activities. The youth had a game night the first night back. The lesson was about Saul becoming Paul. In efforts to explain the story, our youth were blindfolded in the dark for the entire lesson. when finished, they had to try to pack backpacks blinded. The realization of impossible transended through all. They removed their blindfolds and packing backpacks proved to be successful as was the understanding of blindness and the truth of the story- With God, all things are possible. Whether you are blind, mean, dishonest, whatever your sin- all can change with the word of God, the light of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. We continue to help in our community. The youth made mini blueberry cobblers in heart tins to send to the Ronald McDonald House. They also had group discussion about the Hillsides of Camp Luther to share with the children who will be going to camp for the first time or in years to come. It is always evident to see IT ( the unconditional love of God) in each of their stories and in their eyes as they light up when telling it. God is good, all the time! The youth will be planning and preparing a Spaghetti Dinner in June for Camp Luther scholarships. The children love to cook, grow and serve in fellowship at St. Paul Lutheran Church. We yearn to feel the blessings of our wonderful church family. We continue to learn about prayer, peace, spirit, word and the love and light of our Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May His love and light reign in us all! May God s Love and Light be with you always! Spread the Good News! HE IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN, INDEED! ALLELUIA! Your Loving sister in Christ, Jill May 4

GAME NIGHT AT CCC/LYO 7

At the last Council meeting the Stewardship and Finance Committee brought up the idea of having a Ministry Mission Moments (MMM for short) each month. This suggestion came out of the committee s discussion about how to keep the ministry we do day to day in front of all of the followers of Jesus here at St. Paul. Many of us don t see the work of the choir or the youth ministry activities on Wednesday night because we are not actively involved in those particular ministries. So this is a way to see the very active ministry we all do here at St. Paul. The Council decided to have a monthly MMM. These moments will not be on a regular schedule (every second Sunday) but we will have one every month. Evangelism The Evangelism Committee is tasked with spreading the mission of St. Paul, both outside & inside the church. The committee co-chairs are Christina & myself. Some things we do to help fulfill our mission include: Greeting any new people to our church and welcoming them with a gift bag. The bag contains a St. Paul Mug & pens, one of our brochures, a religious book mark and a small treat (cookies, etc.) Marshall Move-In. This event is coordinated with Christ the King & Cross of Grace Lutheran churches. During this event we help the students get moved in to their temporary Marshall home. We also provide refreshing drinks and a wide variety of snacks, for free, to the families & students. This outreach has seen several students attend St. Paul while they are here in Huntington. Blessing of the animals. This event is held each fall and open to the public. Last year we began this outreach again (after not being held for a few years). Pastor blessed 35 animals (mostly dogs) at Ritter Park last fall. We are attempting to coordinate with Enslow Church (who held their blessing of the animals on the same day). We gave out treats to all the animals along with a pin created by our daughter Jo. We had our brochures on hand and spoke with several folks who stopped by. We have redesigned our website. It should be ready to go live in early May. We want to do Water in the Park (giving water out to those walking or running the Ritter park track) and an Octoberfest as events to increase our outreach in the community. We are also holding a family game night on Friday, April 27 th from 6 to 8:30 PM in the Undercroft. This will be a great opportunity to get together as a congregation & have some fun. Feel free to invite some friends and bring a favorite (family appropriate) game to share. As you can imagine, this effort cannot be completed by only a few members. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. St. Paul is our baby & it takes a village to raise it. Thanks, Rick Eid, Evangelism Co-Chair 8

Zoie Fornash Emma Korstanje Garrin Simpson Jackson McComas The Book Club will be meeting on May 10 at 10:30am. We will be discussing Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver Please join us!! COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS Decided to have a Men of Faith recognition on Father s Day June 17. Pastor suggested we have an honor of memory of on this day and that we suggest a $10 contribution to our Camp Luther scholarship fund. On a recommendation from the pastor Worship and Music committee suggested we try different tables at communion in the summer on the first Sunday s in June, July and August. The tables would be similar to the way the choir currently receives communion. This comes from pastor who has heard concerns about parishioner s walking up the steps to the altar rail. This will be evaluated at the end of the summer. Council voted and approved picking up medical insurance for Alexandria after the adoption is finalized. Talked about the Gift Policy as presented by the Stewardship and Finance Committee. Heard from Property Committee as to the drainage hole repair in the back of the building. 11

Brown Bag Bible Study is every Thursday at noon. We will be continuing with the book of 2 Samuel. Please join us in the library! Bible Study Reading Plan May 2018 Psalm 139 Psalm 140 Psalm 141 Psalm 142 Psalm 143 Psalm 144 Psalm 145 Psalm 146 Psalm 147 Psalm 148 Psalm 149 Psalm 150 Proverbs 1 Proverbs 2 Proverbs 3 Proverbs 4 Proverbs 5 Proverbs 6 Proverbs 7 Proverbs 8 Proverbs 9 Proverbs 10 Proverbs 11 Proverbs 12 Proverbs 13 Proverbs 14 Proverbs 15 DAILY BIBLE READINGS NOTE One of the practices of a follower of Jesus is Bible reading. Each month in the newsletter you are provided with daily readings. These readings will help you set a daily discipline for reading the Bible. Sometimes it is helpful to have a journal or piece of paper when you are reading. You can use this to write questions you may have about the text and present those questions to God in prayer. God s blessing as you read God s Word as you seek to be a faithful servant of Jesus. 12

PRAYER VENTURES MAY We give thanks to God for the diverse cultures, languages and heritages of our Asian and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters in Christ and pray for the leaders, growth and vibrancy of Asian congregations, ministries and multicultural congregations throughout the ELCA. 2 Continue to pray for the people and communities in Puerto Rico and other areas of the Caribbean involved in long-term hurricane recovery work, especially restoring safe housing, power and clean water; give thanks for the work of Lutheran Disaster Response and its partners to bring God s hope, healing and renewal to people whose lives have been disrupted by disasters in the United States and around the world. 3 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Rocky Mountain and Southeastern Pennsylvania synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 4 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Northeastern Minnesota, Minneapolis Area and Southeastern Minnesota synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 5 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Arkansas-Oklahoma, Southwestern Texas and South-Central Synod of Wisconsin synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 6 Pray for God s forgiveness and patience for ourselves, our church and society in these times when, too often and easily, we allow differences of opinion and life experience, hostility and vengeance to create rifts in our relationships and communities, that the Spirit will help recenter our lives in Jesus commandment to love each other as God has loved us. 7 Pray for the service and witness of the 11 young adults serving in the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program; the Rev. Rachel Eskesen and Zachary Courter, YAGM country coordinators for Central Europe; and the Rev. Anne Morawski serving with our companions in Hungary and Serbia. 8 Give thanks for the rich partnership and relationship we have with the United Church of Christ, a full communion partner with the ELCA since Pray for their church and ask God to further our respect for one another and work together sharing the gospel and serving our neighbor. 9 The call to believe and be baptized is for all people, without exception or favoritism. We ask God to help us see the Spirit at work in the people around us and to be welcoming, encouraging, bold witnesses to the gospel. 10 Ascension of Our Lord We were not left alone and helpless when Jesus ascended into heaven; we are assured of God s blessings and the power of the Holy Spirit stirring and equipping us to share the good news of the gospel, grow the church and care for our neighbors in need. 11 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Southeast Michigan, New Jersey and Metropolitan New York synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 12 The ELCA Guardian Angels program, with its welcoming congregations, synods and volunteers, physically and spiritually accompanies migrant children, single-parent families and adults through their immigration court processes. Pray for migrants who often navigate confusing and complex situations, that they find hope, confidence and companionship for moving forward, resettling and discovering welcoming faith communities. 13 Pray we grow throughout life in faith and understanding of that to which we give witness and testimony: God s love for us and the eternal life we have received through Jesus Christ. 14 Pray the Spirit is with us and in us as we live our faith together and embrace our church s values of forgiveness and reconciliation; dignity, compassion and justice; inclusion and diversity; courage and openness to change; and faithful stewardship of God s creation and gifts values grounded in faith, our biblical and Lutheran confessional sources and our love of God and neighbor. 15 Pray for those who are doing God s work in the world in partnership with the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Argentina and Uruguay: the seven young adults serving in the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program; Krystle Moraska and Ignacio Madrussan, YAGM country coordinators; and Alberto (Gustavo) Driau, regional representative for South America. 16 Pray our church takes to heart the invitation to discuss and share input to the draft of the women and justice social statement to create a statement that reflects the word of God, our theology, the values of our church and concern for gender-based equality and equity in the world. 18

17 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast, Northern Great Lakes, Pacifica and Saint Paul Area synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 18 We ask God to help us support and reassure students who are experiencing anxiety, weariness or self-doubt while preparing for and taking exams and finals, that they will know they are not alone in life and that our true identity and value is wrapped up in God s unconditional love. 19 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Southeastern Iowa, East-Central Synod of Wisconsin and Oregon synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 20 Day of Pentecost Pray we are all filled with the Holy Spirit to speak and act boldly in the world giving witness to God s love and the good news of Jesus Christ a gift to people of every nation, culture and circumstance. 21 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the North/West Lower Michigan Synod Assembly, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 22 Lift up in prayer ELCA rostered women of color, women who serve faithfully throughout the church; give thanks for the families, mentors and supporters who journeyed with them, and pray other women of color of all ages are also surrounded by people who invite, inspire, encourage and equip them for lives of service and ministry. 23 Give thanks for the thousands of young adults beginning their training and service at ELCA camps and retreat centers across the country; pray their faith, enthusiasm and care inspire the lives and stir the faith of children, youth, adults and families. 24 Ask God to grant us wisdom, curiosity and discernment in our conversations about science and technology issues in our society and world and to further the work of the Lutheran Alliance for Faith, Science and Technology to expand awareness and promote conversation about the implications of science and technology for Christian faith and life. 25 Pray for young adults who are finishing their formal education and discerning their vocation and future, that the Spirit will inspire them to use their faith, gifts and passions for the well-being and benefit of our neighbors, communities and world. 26 Give thanks for the gift of the Spirit present and at work in the world and our lives helping, renewing, energizing and guiding us revealing God s truth, will and wisdom. 27 The Holy Trinity We profess through our creeds and teachings our belief in the triune God Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever; at the same time, we confess we have questions about the mystery of the Trinity. Pray our wondering, curiosity and even uncertainty drive us to prayer, studying Scripture and conversation with one another while still trusting that we are children of God loved just as we are, questions and all. 28 Memorial Day Remember and give thanks for women and men who have served in the military and sacrificed their lives for the sake of justice, peace, freedom and the well-being of our country, other nations and people who suffer oppression and injustice in the world. 29 We are a church active with doing God s work in the world. Pray that congregations, youth and adults involved in summer service-learning experiences, volunteerism and community projects are guided by God s vision of peace, justice and compassion in the world, a spirit of accompaniment and long-term partnership, mutual respect and hope. 30 Pray for the service and witness of ELCA missionary Jeffrey Martin working in partnership with the Lutheran Church in Great Britain and the 12 young adults in the Young Adults in Global Mission program serving in Scotland and England with the ecumenical program Time for God. 31 Remember in prayer leaders and delegates gathered for the Western North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Greater Milwaukee and Indiana-Kentucky synod assemblies, that the Spirit will strengthen, guide and encourage them for God s work in the world and growing the church. 19
