2 Happy Valentine's Day. February is sometimes called the "Love Month." I met Patty on Valentine's Day 44 years ago and we were married one year later. We met in the student union building at Mitchell College in Statesville. So I want us to think about loving God rather than romantic love. We ended January with a Revival at Kingswood UMC. During the month we held a Covenant Renewal Service with a Baptismal renewal as a sign of our commitment in We are going to begin our Stewardship emphasis during the month of February. As we look back to 2014 we can be thankful. We carried over a surplus of funds into the year 2014 from We were able to meet our budget with your gifts and our surplus. We have carried over a small surplus again in We are continuing to look for a part time Director to work with Children and Youth and that position is funded with money in the bank to pay for the salary for one year. Our worship attendance in 2014 was higher than in We can be thankful we reached people in our community with our School Supplies Program and the Backpacks. We feed 30 children at the Rural Hall school and their families each week through the backpack program. We collected school supplies for the Northwest Missional Network schools and Mineral Springs. We helped over 300 children through this effort. We collected food for local missions and sent gifts to UMCOR, Samaritan Ministries, and Crisis Control. We helped our seniors at the Living Well and started a ministry at Kingswood for our Seniors. The Sky group has been a blessing. Our women have reorganized the UMW at Kingswood. Our VBS attendance this past year was double what it was during Our Bible Study has been well attended this past year. Thanks go to all of you for helping in these causes. So now as we begin our emphasis on our Stewardship. You can help your church during this campaign. Let us be in Love with God and may it show in our giving of our time, gift and talents. We will be sending out information to you about our Campaign. Please follow those instructions. Once again may I say thank you to a great church full of great people. Camping at Camp Tekoa. On February 15 Rev. James Johnson, the Director of Camping Ministry for the Western North Carolina Conference, will be our featured speaker. He will be bringing with him a video about how camping can change lives. Our Conference Camp is Camp Tekoa and that is where Rev. Johnson serves. He directs the ministry of all the District Camps. Have you thought about sending your child or grandchildren to camp? What is available? Come and see on Feb. 15th. His Servant, Pastor Sid Ground Coffee, Peanut Butter, Toothbrushes & Toothpaste (sample size) 100% Fruit Juice Items can be placed in the collection bins in the narthex and at the bottom of the center staircase.

3 Learning what God has to say about Issues Pertaining to Human Sexuality, Romance and Purity The first session of this study group for older youth was held on Wed. evening, Jan. 7. Maegan Williamson and Dominic Immordino, students at Liberty University, spoke to the group with encouraging words concerning Biblical standards of behavior for young Christians. A video was shown and group discussion held that provided additional insight into important issues for young men and women. Because of inclement weather, the second session scheduled for January 14 was postponed but will be held on January 21 and on each subsequent Wednesday for the next seven weeks. John Cox will lead the young men and Lisa Williamson will lead the young women in this eight-week course. If you are interested in attending, or are interested in your youth attending, please contact John, Lisa or the church office at The youth are sponsoring their annual Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, February 14, 5:30-8:00 pm. We welcome all Preschool and community families to join us for a delightful dining experience. Join us for dinner in the fellowship hall, or order takeout for the entire family. Prices; $7.50 adults, $3.50 children, children 5 and under eat free. As Valentine's Day, the holiday that celebrates love approaches, please take a few minutes to address and send a card to our college students to encourage them as they continue in their studies. A reminder from our congregation that we hold them in our prayers may be just the support that a student needs as he or she faces challenges while away from home. 5 Worship Time programming for children ages 3 years - 2nd grade started the new year with a new name for this special group of little ones: The Promises! As we continued learning about the worship service, we have also enjoyed talking about God's promises to us and ways we grow in our loving relationship with Him by keeping our promises. Every month of the year, The Promises will learn "anthems," study Bible verses and talk about different themes relating to how they can grow closer to Jesus. If you would like to volunteer to enjoy this special group of Promises for a month, please call or Trudy Cox, , jcox47@triad.rr.com! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL ALERT: JULY 12-15, 2015! Confirmation Class is meeting on Sunday. Confirmation is the time our young people make a decision to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and accept what was done in their Baptism as a child. That is why it is called confirmation. The class is for those who are in the 6 th grade currently or those who are older but have never participated in a class. Your young person is invited to learn about the Bible, church traditions and United Methodist history. We learn about the policy and organization of the United Methodist Church and about our founder John Wesley. The class will meet Sunday beginning 1/25 at 10am in the pastor s office. Parents are invited to attend also especially if you are interested in joining the church. The class will last from 6-8 weeks. See you at Confirmation class. We are still inviting potential candidates to apply for this part-time position at Kingswood. Please share our job posting and job description with anyone you know who may be interested. The job description can be found on our website: kingswood-umc.org. You are invited to support this fund as you are able with gifts, honorariums and memorial gifts. Gifts given to this account should be designated "Children and Youth Ministry Fund." Gifts to the fund in January have been given by: Kim & Ronnie Middleton and John & Jo Hunter. A pretty, petite lady with a wonderful smile. That s how many people would describe Gwen Perkins, who returned to the Stanleyville/Rural Hall area last August and quickly rejoined Kingswood. I m so glad to be back at Kingswood, says Gwen, who now has an apartment at Arbor Ridge Retirement Center in Stanleyville. Gwen, along with her husband Ted, were members of Kingswood for years when they lived in the Oldtown community. Following Ted s death, she bought a townhouse on Jonestown Road and joined Trinity United Methodist Church, where former Kingswood minister, Rev. Lee Strange, was pastor before retiring. Arbor Ridge has proved to be an excellent choice at this stage in her life, Gwen points out. Her apartment includes a living room, bedroom and galley kitchen, furnished with family antiques, paintings and other cherished items. She shares the apartment with a beautiful calico cat, Callie, which she rescued several months ago. My son, Ted, Jr., and his wife, Janet, live in Winston-Salem and work in her optometry practice in Elkin. Ted helps keep me up to date with basic computer skills, she points out. Gwen plays piano by ear and often plays for the residents at Arbor Ridge. She recently was given a small harp, which she is enjoying. Other interests include attending plays at Twin City Stage. Gwen grew up in the Triad; her father was a tobacco farmer, and her husband was in charge of logistics for the National Guard throughout his career. Gwen was secretary to senior executives at a large insurance company in Greensboro and later worked part time for the owner of Hauser Rental in Winston-Salem. If you have not met Gwen, be sure to say hello soon! Her address is Apt. 204, Arbor Ridge, her phone is Our February meeting will be Monday, February 9 at 10:00 as we gather for a Let s Make a Difference time. We ll make Valentine treat packages for our shut-ins, write cards to our college students, refresh the bulletin boards in the Fellowship Hall and help with small jobs the trustees identify. We ll also plan some upcoming trips, including a visit to the Billy Graham Museum in Charlotte. Then we ll head to lunch and be back in time for those who need to pick up grandchildren from school. ***** If you need a ride to this event or to the Spaghetti Supper on February 14, please notify the church office in advance. Don t forget that February is Kingswood s month to pack backpacks with food for children at Rural Hall Elementary each Thursday night. See separate article for details; let the church office know if you would like to help but need a ride.

6 In the case of bad weather Pastor Sid, along with the Trustees, work together to make a decision about services. Tune in to WXII for any church schedule changes or cancellations. We will also send an announcement through our automated telephone system. There is no meal planned for February. We encourage everyone to participate in the Youth Spaghetti Supper this month instead of our monthly Third Thursday meal. This congregational ministry is back headed up by Ann Marshall and Mary Kiger! These ladies provide meals to members who have had an overnight stay in the hospital. Thank you Ann & Mary! Kingswood continues its support of the Backpack Program that helps provide weekend food for children at Rural Hall Elementary School. February is our month to pack the food; please join us each Thursday in February at 6:00 at Elm Grove UMC. Scout Sunday will be Feb. 8th. They will be serving as Ushers and helping with the Worship Service. We are proud to support a Cub and Boy Scout Troop at Kingswood UMC. The Piedmont and Salem Districts of BSA s Old Hickory Council joined forces for the Klondike Derby the weekend of 1/16. Eighteen boys from our Troop 914 participated and finished 1 st place in 4 of 22 events and, as a Troop, finished 2 nd place overall. Way to go patrols! The annual Scouting for Food event begins on Saturday, 2/7. Our boys will place door hangers at homes in the Rural Hall community requesting residents to leave food out for pick up the following Saturday, 2/14. Feel free to bring your donations to the church anytime between now and February 14 th. A box will be placed in the Narthex for your donations. The scouts appreciate your support.
