2010 CURRICULUM STANDARDS RELIGION - Grades 1 8 This curriculum dcument was written by administratrs and teachers in the Archdicese f Hartfrd. Principals and teachers in the Dicese f Ft. Wrth have reviewed and revised these standards fr use in Ft. Wrth Cathlic Schl.

SPECIAL THANKS Sincere appreciatin is given t the Archdicesan Religin Cmmittee wh wrked fr the past year in develping the cntent, student learning bjectives, and enabling utcmes f this dcument. Their passin fr the study f religin and thelgy, dedicatin t Cathlic schl educatin, religius educatin, and faith frmatin have prvided this Archdicesan Religin Curriculum Standards, a mdel f cnsistent curriculum fr grades ne thrugh twelve Archdicesan Religin Cmmittee Gertrud Bianchi Religin Teacher, St. Paul Cathlic High Schl, Bristl Sr. Maureen Fitzgerald Principal, St. Rita Schl, Hamden Lydia Frgetta-Sheffield Kindergarten Teacher, Our Lady f Mercy, Madisn Laurie Janeck Religin Teacher, East Cathlic High Schl, Manchester Marge McDnald Religin Teacher, St. Mary Schl, Newingtn Rsemary McNally Religin Department Chair, Nrthwest Cathlic High Schl, West Hartfrd Judy Rwinski Religin Teacher, St. Bridget, Cheshire Archdicesan Leadership: Maria Maynard -- Assistant Superintendent f Cathlic Schls Valerie Mara -- Directr f Curriculum Design Patricia Keck -- Assistant Directr f Religius Educatin And he gave sme as apstles, thers as prphets, thers as evangelists, thers as pastrs and teachers, t equip the hly nes fr the wrk f the ministry, fr building up f Christ, until we all attain t the unity f faith and knwledge f the Sn f Gd, t mature humankind, t the extent f the full stature f Christ. (Eph. 4:11-13) 2

CATHOLIC SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY G, therefre, and make disciples f all natins, baptizing them in the name f the Father, and f the Sn, and f the Hly Spirit, teaching them t bserve all that I have cmmanded yu. And, behld, I am with yu always, until the end f the age. (Mt 28:19-20) Cathlic schls are vital t the Church s missin f evangelizatin and catechesis. They exist in rder t educate the whle persn: mind, bdy, and sul. They present the ttality f the Cathlic faith. Whether Cathlic schls are part f a parish structure, archdicesan, r private, grwth in the Cathlic faith fr the children and yung peple wh attend them is essential t their identity and purpse. A Cathlic schl is an integral part f the ttal parish catechetical plan. It is an evangelizing cmmunity within the larger evangelizing cmmunity that is the parish. A Cathlic schl depends n the parish f which it is a part t prvide the ecclesial visin fr its particular participatin in the Church s missin. As ne f the cmpnents f the ttal catechetical effrt f the parish, the Cathlic schl shuld be in harmny with and cmplement the ther catechetical prgrams ffered by the parish. Similarly, reginal, dicesan, and private Cathlic schls nt affiliated with a specific parish, shuld wrk in clse cllabratin with neighbring parishes (CF, GE, N. 8). T that end, this standard based curriculum will indicate and direct the bjectives and enabling student utcmes that are apprpriate fr any catechetical prgram. It is recmmended that parish catechetical leaders determine at their discretin the bjectives that accmmdate the missin and philsphy f their particular religius educatin/faith frmatin prgram. While there may be varius structures f catechetical prgrams, there is unity in ur missin. In the Archdicese f Hartfrd, the purpse f this catechetical curriculum is t engage yung peple in discussin, cperative wrk, and independent reflectin t examine their relatinship with Christ, t deepen their knwledge f his life and Church, and t make chices that manifests persnal sanctificatin and scial transfrmatin in Christian truths and values. The definitive aim f catechesis is t put peple nt nly in tuch, but als in cmmunin and intimacy, with Jesus Christ. (General Directry fr Catechesis, #80) This is reinfrced in the fllwing dcuments: Accrdingly, the definitive aim f catechesis is t put peple nt nly in tuch but in cmmunin, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: nly He can lead us t the lve f the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life f the Hly Trinity (Catechesi Tradendae 5); Frm this, everything else fllws (lve f neighbr, service); Christ is WHO we teach; Christ has everything t d with what we teach (CT 6); Only in deep cmmunin with Him will catechists find light and strength fr an authentic, desirable renewal f catechesis (CT 9). Cathlic schls seek t empwer yung peple t live as disciples f Jesus Christ, engage them in their rle as active participants in the Church, and t fster their grwth spiritually, academically, persnally and mrally. The United States Cuncil f Bishps reminds us in their visin fr the Natinal Directry fr Catechesis (NDC) that The Cathlic schl shuld strive t integrate the Cathlic faith int every aspect f its life. It seeks t relate all human culture t the news f salvatin, s that the life f faith will illuminate the knwledge that students gradually gain f the wrld, f life, and f [humankind]. In Cathlic schls, children and yung peple can experience learning and living fully integrated in the light f faith. (NDC, 2005) 3

It is the respnsibility f all adults wh are called t be teachers f catechesis fr yung peple, whether in dicesan Cathlic schls r parish catechetical prgrams, t prclaim Christ s missin led by the Hly Spirit. This, t, is a vcatin. Jesus calls every man and wman frm every natin and every race t jin in prclaiming the Gd News, annuncing the cming f the Gd s kingdm f lve, justice, and peace with clarity, enthusiasm, and reslve. (NDC, 2005) Christ s message des nt nly express the wrd f Gd, Jesus is the wrd f Gd. These truths must be taught, shared, instilled, and celebrated in every assembly where yung peple are gathered t learn abut the divine missin. T this end, great hpe lies in the future f ur glbal cmmunity, the whle Church. The wrld in which we live begs t be shwn anther way the way f truth, the way f peace, the way f lve. The challenges that face humankind are many; therefre, we must be guided by the Incarnate Gd wh revealed t us the way t live. It is the rle f religius educatrs t stir in the hearts f their students the fire f Gd s spirit and t reveal thrugh their living and their teaching the integratin f Christ s life and their wn. Instructin in religius educatin must be integrated in all aspects f schl life. Just as authentic applicatins f Cathlic scial teachings are integrated acrss all academic disciplines in schl curricula, s t must authentic applicatin f all academic cntent areas be integrated, measurable, and visible in this curriculum. It then becmes a fundamental, vital, and centering fcus f students life experiences in and ut f schl. Here, t, instructin in religius truth and values is an integral part f the schl prgram. It is nt ne mre subject alngside the rest, but instead it is perceived and functins as the underlying reality in which the student s experiences f learning and living achieve their cherence and their deepest meaning. (T Teach as Jesus Did, 1972, # 103) The Archdicese f Hartfrd fully supprts the harmnius cllabratin f aligning these religin curriculum standards with instructin in Cathlic schls as well as parish religius educatin/faith frmatin prgrams. Indeed, the hpe f humanity lies in preparing yung peple t be active Christian witnesses and t serve thers as they have been served within ur shared missin and ministry. The future f humanity lies in the hands f thse wh are strng enugh t prvide cming generatins with reasns fr living and hping. (Pastral Cnstitutin n the Church in the Mdern Wrld, # 31) Religius educatin prgrams must strive t teach within the experience f the Christian cmmunity, and prepare individuals fr effective Christian witness and service t thers, within an atmsphere cnducive t hliness and persnal relatinship with Christ. (T Teach as Jesus Did, # 82) Educatin is integral t the missin f the Church t prclaim the gd news. First and fremst every Cathlic educatinal institutin is a place t encunter the living Gd wh, in Jesus Christ, reveals His transfrming lve and truth. (Spe Salvi, 4) 4

HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT Much thught, time and energy went int the creatin f Archdicesan Religin Curriculum (ARC). Mre than any ther subject in the curriculum, Cathlic religius teaching defines the nature f the Cathlic schl and parish catechetical prgrams. Thrugh the study f religin, the students will prgress beynd knwledge f precepts f the Faith t a deeper understanding and appreciatin f the Spirit f the Living Gd dwelling in each and every persn. Frm that awareness cmes a deep respect fr the dignity integral t every human being and an acceptance f the Christian s rle as disciple in the building f the Kingdm. The infrmatin in this dcument is based n the Catechism f the Cathlic Church, the Natinal Directry fr Catechesis, and the United States Cnference f Cathlic Bishps (USCCB) publicatin, Dctrinal Elements f a Curriculum Framewrk fr the Develpment f Catechetical Materials fr Yung Peple f High Schl Age. References thrughut the dcument are made frm T Teach as Jesus Did as well Ppe Benedict XVI s address, Christ Our Hpe frm his Apstlic Jurney t the United States in April It is a wrking dcument that evlved frm the Archdicese f Hartfrd Religin Guidelines, designed t be anntated by the teachers wh use it. At every grade level, the religin curriculum standards are structured in strands that represent the fur pillars f the Catechism f the Cathlic Church: The Prfessin f Faith (Creed), Celebratin f the Christian Mystery (Sacraments and the Mass), Life in Christ (The Ten Cmmandments and the Beatitudes), and Christian Prayer (The Prayer f the Believer). All f these strands shuld be integrated with ne anther t maximize learning, and the study f religin shuld be an integral part f all cntent areas. Achievement Standards are the primary instructinal targets that utline essential tpics and skills in the religin curriculum that students shuld knw, be able t d, and fully cmprehend by the end f high schl. Daily standards-based lessn planning enables educatrs t align curriculum and instructin with standards, as they have been adapted by this Archdicese, thereby keeping the gals f ur students in mind. The purpse f standards-based curriculum is t empwer all students t meet new, challenging standards f religius educatin. Student bjectives are the primary tasks students shuld be able t achieve as a result f instructin f the suggested numbered activities in the sub-skills listed under enabling utcmes. Student bjectives must be cntinually assessed t assure a prgressin tward mastery is achieved by all students. The ARC is designed t meet the learning needs f all students in a Cathlic schl prgram and a parish catechetical prgram. The full curriculum is a requirement fr Cathlic schl prgrams where religin classes meet every day and is assessed as graduatin criteria. Thse student bjectives that are highlighted are recmmendatins fr prgrams that meet nce a week and are nt dependent n graduatin criteria. Final determinatin f selected student bjectives lies with the discretin f parish catechetical leaders. Enabling utcmes are skills taught that will result in mastery f the student bjective. Teachers are encuraged t check utcmes as they are taught r assessed as well, as this will drive instructin. Enabling utcmes are suggested skills. It is at the discretin f each teacher t determine the needs f the students in a class t determine which r all utcmes shuld be taught. Indeed, teachers may design their wn utcmes based n their mastery f the cntent and experience in the classrm. Therefre, it is suggested that teachers list text crrelatins, resurces, and assessments that wrk best fr the utcmes listed and utcmes riginally designed. Curriculum Frmat Grades 1-6 The ARC utlines achievement standards, student bjectives, and enabling utcmes fr grades 1 thrugh t grade 12. Grades ne thrugh six fcus n ne particular theme fr the entire year, such as Sacramental Preparatin in grade tw and three, r the Hebrew 5

Scriptures in grade six. Guidelines fr preparatin f the sacrament f Penance and Recnciliatin and the Sacrament f the Eucharist can be fund in Appendices I and II respectively. Grades 7 & 8 In grades seven and eight, the curriculum is cmbined t represent a tw-year curse f study fr each student bjective. In reality, there are several curses f study that are available t these grades, including, but nt limited t: The New Testament Liturgy and Wrship Mrality The Creed Church Histry Christlgy It is nt ur intent t advcate fr ne prgram ver anther, r endrse ne particular text, since all f these prgrams have valid and imprtant material t present. Each catechetical prgram whether taught in a Cathlic schl setting r religius educatin/faith frmatin prgram may select thse prgrams that best suit their needs and the needs f the students. It is incumbent upn the schl t insure that the pints presented here serve as a reference in the selectin and implementatin f materials/textbks in the grade seven and grade eight religin prgrams. Hwever, Cathlic schls are reminded that they must fllw the apprved textbk list issued each schl year by the Office f Cathlic Schls and require Religin be taught each day, even when there is a half day schedule. This becmes paramunt as ur students prepare t leave ur schl cmmunities. High Schl The high schl curriculum represents cntent specific student bjectives directly taken frm the USCCB s dcument, mre easily achieved in specific curse fferings. While student bjectives are listed fr each catechetical strand, enabling utcmes will be cntingent upn the syllabus f each religin curse ffered. Therefre, curse syllabi shuld reflect specific student bjectives listed in the high schl religin curriculum. Assessment Careful attentin shuld be paid t the Assessment sectin f the dcument. Assessment is a key element f any curriculum, whether used as an instructinal tl r as a measurement f learning. Assessment fr learning (frmative assessment) is a pwerful strategy fr imprving instructin and student achievement. Assessment fr learning is abut btaining feedback n the teaching and learning and using that feedback t further shape the instructinal prcess and imprve learning. (Fullan, 2006) Gd teachers learn which assessment tls best fit the learning utcmes addressed and ensure that a variety f summative assessments are used (perfrmance-based, independent, criterin based) t determine an accurate indicatin f student achievement (See Assessment, pg. 9 and Assessment Measures, Appendix V). Writing We cannt emphasize enugh the imprtance f writing as part f every curriculum area. Every day in every classrm, students shuld be writing individually, in small r whle-class grups, in jurnals, thrugh s and ther Internet cnnectins, n electrnic devices. They shuld be writing research reprts, pinins, petry, cnclusins, summaries, prayers, and reflectins. In additin, teaching students t carefully and accurately cite surces fr their wrk beginning in elementary grades, and then emphasizing varius bibligraphy styles such as MLA r APA in middle schl grades, is vital t ensure prper research methd and technique in high schl. Just as it is impssible t imagine a schl day withut reading, it shuld be equally impssible t envisin a schl day withut writing. 6

Jurnal writing is an effective learning strategy and assessment instrument teachers are encuraged t use. Hwever, teachers wh assign jurnals must understand that they are respnsible fr reading entries in a timely manner and taking apprpriate actin if and when students write entries that cause alarm (vilent r self-destructive remarks, fr example). ASSESSMENT Assessment is a means f measuring perfrmance. It illustrates hw well we are accmplishing ur stated missin, gals, and bjectives t educate and frm the whle persn. Thrugh an integrated system f standards and f multiple frms f evaluatin, assessment measures: beliefs, attitudes and behavirs, which are expressins f ur Cathlic identity; cntent knwledge student achievement (individual and grup) ; and the learning and teaching envirnment (NCEA S Statement n Accuntability and Assessment in Cathlic Educatin) Assessments f students shuld match the learning utcme r gal. In all classrms, a variety f assessments, bth bjective and subjective, shuld be used t enhance learning and measure prgress. Assessments are bth instructinal tls fr students while they are learning and accuntability tls t determine if learning has ccurred. These assessments shuld include, but are nt limited t: Summative assessments are MILEPOSTS while frmative assessments are CHECKPOINTS. Milepst/Summative assessments are designed initially by a teacher fr each curse and reflects where yu want yur students t be at end f unit. It is a measure OF learning designed t determine degree f mastery f each student it judges the success f the prcess/prduct at the end. Checkpint/Frmative assessments are designed t prepare students fr the milepst assessment; they direct instructin and ensure students have the apprpriate practice pprtunities befre the summative assessment. They are stps alng the way. Results are used t direct instructin and/r t plan crrective activities. FORMATIVE SUMMATIVE PURPOSE T mnitr and guide prcess/prduct while still in prgress T judge the success f prcess/prduct at the end (hwever arbitrarily defined) TIME OF ASSESSMENT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT During the prcess r develpment f the prduct Infrmal bservatin, quizzes, hmewrk, teacher questins, wrksheets At the end f the prcess r when the prduct is cmpleted Frmal bservatin, tests, prjects, term papers, exhibitins USE OF ASSESSMENT INFORMATION T imprve r change a prcess/prduct while it is still ging n r being develped Judge the quality f a prcess/prduct; grade, rank, prmte 7

The Religin Teacher It is imprtant t keep in mind that any curriculum is nly as effective as the persn, r persns, whse respnsibility it is t teach. Therefre, the persnal qualities, credentials, and cmmitment f every teacher are vital. Especially des it depend upn the faith, hpe, and lve f teachers respnding t Gd s grace by grwing in these virtues and ministering t thers. (NDC, 2005) The persn f the teacher is the medium in which the message f faith is incarnated. The teachers in Cathlic schls and religius educatin/faith frmatin prgrams must embrace the Cathlic faith in their persnal lives, s that they may share their faith and their lve f the Church with the children entrusted t their care. Teachers wh s cherish and live their faith, galvanize and inspirit these religin curriculum standards and thus preserve the Cathlic faith. 9

APPENDIX I Seven Key Themes f Cathlic Scial Teaching The Church s scial teaching is a rich treasure f wisdm abut building a just sciety and living lives f hliness amidst the challenges f mdern sciety. Mdern Cathlic scial teaching has been articulated thrugh a traditin f papal, cnciliar, and Episcpal dcuments. The depth and richness f this traditin can be understd best thrugh a direct reading f these dcuments. In these brief reflectins, we wish t highlight several f the key themes that are at the heart f ur Cathlic scial traditin. Life and Dignity f the Human Persn The Cathlic Church prclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity f the human persn is the fundatin f a mral visin fr sciety. Our belief in the sanctity f human life and the inherent dignity f the human persn is the fundatin f all the principles f ur scial teaching. In ur sciety, human life is under direct attack frm abrtin and assisted suicide. The value f human life is being threatened by increasing use f the death penalty. We believe that every persn is precius, that peple are mre imprtant than things, and that the measure f every institutin is whether it threatens r enhances the life and dignity f the human persn. Call t Family, Cmmunity, and Participatin The persn is nt nly sacred but als scial. Hw we rganize ur sciety in ecnmics and plitics, in law and plicy directly affects human dignity and the capacity f individuals t grw in cmmunity. The family is the central scial institutin that must be supprted and strengthened, nt undermined. We believe that peple have a right and a duty t participate in sciety, seeking tgether the cmmn gd and well-being f all, especially the pr and vulnerable. Rights and Respnsibilities The Cathlic traditin teaches that human dignity can be prtected and a healthy cmmunity can be achieved nly if human rights are prtected and respnsibilities are met. Therefre, every persn has a fundamental right t life and a right t thse things required fr human decency. Crrespnding t these rights are duties and respnsibilities t ne anther, t ur families, and t the larger sciety. Optin fr the Pr and Vulnerable A basic mral test is hw ur mst vulnerable members are faring. In a sciety marred by deepening divisins between rich and pr, ur traditin recalls the stry f the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us t put the needs f the pr and vulnerable first. The Dignity f Wrk and the Rights f Wrkers The ecnmy must serve peple, nt the ther way arund. Wrk is mre than a way t make a living; it is a frm f cntinuing participatin in Gd s creatin. If the dignity f wrk is t be prtected, the basic rights f wrkers must be respected: the right t prductive wrk, t decent and fair wages, t rganize and jin unins, t private prperty, and t ecnmic initiative. Slidarity We are ur brthers and sisters keepers, wherever they live. We are ne human family, whatever ur natinal, racial, ethnic, ecnmic, and idelgical differences. Learning t practice the virtue f slidarity means learning that lving ur neighbr has glbal dimensins in an interdependent wrld. 71

Care fr Gd s Creatin We shw ur respect fr the Creatr by ur stewardship f creatin. Care fr the earth is nt just an Earth Day slgan, it is a requirement f ur faith. We are called t prtect peple and the planet, living ur faith in relatinship with all f Gd s creatin. This envirnmental challenge has fundamental mral and ethical dimensins that cannt be ignred. This summary shuld nly be a starting pint fr thse interested in Cathlic scial teaching. A full understanding can nly be achieved by reading papal, cnciliar, and Episcpal dcuments that make up this rich traditin.
