1 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NEWS Monsignor Thomas M. Wells Council Volume 12, Issue 1 #13008 Silver Spring, MD July/August 2013 Grand Knight's Message Grand Knight Deacon Michel Bond Knights on the Jericho Road Worthy Brothers All: Jesus parable of the Good Samaritan provides an ideal template for the goals of our council in the coming year. While the main thrust of the story in Luke 10:25-37 is about helping those in need, knowing the rest of the story reveals important lessons for those of us who have pledged our service to the heavenly court. In reply to the law scholar s question, and who is my neighbor? Jesus describes how a Samaritan, a people despised by the Jews, helps a man beaten and left for dead by robbers. Unlike both the priest and the Levite, both respected sects of Jewish society, who deliberately avoid the beaten traveler, the Samaritan not only heals the man s wounds with water and oil, he carries him to an inn, pays for his room, board, and care; he even promises the innkeeper that he will pay for any additional expenses upon his return. Jesus purposely uses the road between Jerusalem and Jericho, a 17-mile downhill trek along which thieves and robbers prey upon travelers and a victim for whom Jews have no sympathy, to emphasize the Samaritan s mercy and to challenges the Jewish law scholar to go and do likewise. The Jericho road represents is a metaphor for the needs, sufferings, and evils that we encounter in our lives. Christ is the Good Samaritan who not only takes upon himself our sins and restores our lives through the water of baptism and the oil of confirmation, but provides on-going mercy and forgiveness until He comes again, and bids us to go and do likewise. So what does all this have to do with the Knights of Columbus? Our Order exists to empower us to serve our parish community as it travels along its Jericho road. It provides not only financial security for our families through its insurance program, but for our families physical, social, and spiritual well-being too. It provides opportunities for the men of our parish to learn to be Plaque for a Dozen GKs Paul Sanneman, Founding Member, At the June 26 Council dinner, a plaque to commemorate all Past Grand Knights of our council was presented to the three PGKs in attendance: Werner Moeller, Marvin Schuttloffel, and Bill Bolin. 2 Grand Knight Message continued from page 1 better husbands, fathers, and brothers. Its programs and activities provide many opportunities serve our parish, community, and the universal church. However, to be successful in its efforts, our Order requires the active participation and commitment of all of our brother Knights. Never has the old adage eighty percent of success is just showing up been more applicable. Its church, council, and youth activities need your active involvement physically, intellectually, and spiritually, to be successful Good Samaritans. It is not enough that we continue such activities as Tootsie Rolls, car raffles, Christmas cards, soccer shoot-outs, basketball free-throw competitions, seminarian and religious support, scholarships, Keeping Christ in Christmas poster contests, essay contests, and pro-life support. In an effort to service our parish families even better in the future, this year we plan to consider new programs such as Special Olympics, Columbian Squires for boys, a Ladies Auxiliary, and Squirettes for girls. These goals can only be achieved with the active participation of the men of our parish. In the spirit of the New Evangelization, we as Knights and as disciples, must seek out and invite them to live out the gospel through our parish ministries and our council activities. Supreme Council challenges us to one member per council per month. Christ tells us that the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Send more laborers for the harvest. 4 Altar Servers Treated to the Knights' Pool Party Altar servers from St. Andrew's Parish were treated to a fun day at the pool this June. The Knights treated the servers to free admission to the pool for swimming, as well as a cookout. Father Dan presented attendees certificates for their service to the Parish. The council would like to thank the Knights who participated and Lise Baur for her help in organizing the event. Silent Auction On Saturday July 13, 2013 the Knights of Council #13008 sponsored a spaghetti dinner and co-sponsored a silent auction which turned out to be a huge success. A major retail outlet had donated items that have been returned in excellent condition or damaged cartons or discontinued items to the Gabriel Project It is estimated that over seventy people participated in the dinner which included spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and meat ball's accompanied with John O'Donnell's secret recipe of delicious sauces. Also included in the $5.00 price was drinks of three various juices, lemonade and ice water. Beer and wine were available for the suggested donation of only $2.00. Supper and silent auction began immediately after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. It was estimated that over forty people registered for bid numbers that they could use during the auction. The last ten minutes to bid created a frenzied push to finalize the bidding with ended sharply at 7:45 p.m. Within minutes the top bidder was summoned to claim and pay for their items. A total of over $ was raised by The Gabriel Project and Council # The auction money was shared equally at one half going to each group. The response to the call for assistance to serve the food and assist in the auction was over whelming. Marvin Schuttloffel was quoted "I had so much help, I was tempted to hire someone just to manage the many volunteers." Three different Councils, from the local area, had representatives participating. A special thanks to John O'Donnell, who spent most of Saturday preparing the excellent meal for all to share, and a very warm thank you to all the Knights who made the whole evening a grand success. St Andrews Parish is a very generous group especially when there is a worthy cause.* Knights Of Columbus 4

5 Monsignor Wells Message [From the Pastor s Desk, Spiritual Reflections by Msgr, Thomas M. Wells] Lessons of Mary's Assumption August 11, 1996 I confess that I do not think about death as much as, probably, I should. It has occurred to me today that, apart from the wonderful asthma medications, a couple of the very severe attacks I have had could have been even more dangerous and that my lifestyle could be less active than it is. Also, as a priest who celebrates three or four funerals most months, I obviously am acquainted with death and dying. On the other hand, compared to the Spanish monks of the sixteenth century who used to keep a skull available to remind them of the "certain, sad, sentence of death," I find my meditations much more concerned with the here and now. All things considered, I suppose the primary focus on living as a Christian today is better than living in fear of the judgment to come. However, it is easy today to forget that, ultimately, our goal is union with God and heaven. That is one reason why this week's feast of Our Lady's Assumption is such a blessing. The Church reminds us that just as Mary, a creature like us, is body and soul in heaven, so also are we destined to the "resurrection of the body and life everlasting." No, there is no reason for my being preoccupied with death, but I should be concerned with living the life of Jesus that only becomes more glorious with physical death. The doctrine of the Assumption, of course, teaches that Mary's body was not corrupted by death. (Whether or not she actually died or, rather, was raised to heaven without experiencing death, has never been defined. Most theologians speculate that she did die but that her incorrupt body was assumed into heaven). Her bodily assumption separates her from us in that our body and soul will not be reunited until the Last Judgment at the end of time. This difference may seem not too important (after all, if I get to heaven, I do not think I will mind waiting a couple of thousand years to be reunited with this body!), but as always, doctrine has practical lessons. First of all, the doctrine of Mary's and our bodily resurrection reminds us of the sacredness of the body. It is not just the soul that is redeemed by Jesus: our whole being is redeemed and, in fact, the way we show our faith is most often through the actions of our bodies. Secondly, we remember that Mary's bodily Assumption is a privilege of her sinlessness. We are made for eternal life; but the effects of original sin will be with us until the final victory of the Son of Mary is proclaimed at the end of time. One of the great horrors of sin is death and bodily corruption. Mary's Assumption reminds us of the beauty of her sinless motherhood, but it also reminds us of what we are apt to forget: that apart from her Son, we would be subject to eternal death and corruption. Mary is the first fruit of Jesus victory; but, surely, those who hope in Him will be with Him and His Blessed Mother.* Reflections Lawrence P. Grayson Governance Without God Religious convictions, traditional notions of opposite-sex marriage and moral disapproval of homosexuality should not be the basis for establishing public law. So stated a federal district judge in 2010, as he overrode the will of California s electorate. Voters had approved Proposition 8, a ballot measure to amend the state constitution and negate the state s Supreme Court ruling which legalized marriage between same-sex couples. The judge stated that the voters enacted a private moral view and which he deemed to be unconstitutional. The decision was stayed, and the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard testimony in March 2013, will soon render a judgment. To America s founders, the district court s opinion that religious convictions should not influence public law would have been perverse. These early leaders opened the sessions of the first Continental Congress with a prayer from a clergyman, declared their independence with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, frequently proclaimed, in the words of George Washington, national days of prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, hired chaplains to provide spiritual guidance to the members of the legislature, and from 1801 to the Civil War held Sunday church services in the House of Representatives which Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison regularly attended. James Wilson, one of the original justices of the Supreme Court and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, epitomized the thinking of the day, stating: Human law must rest its authority ultimately upon the authority of that law which is divine. But the religious convictions of the nation have been changing and with it legal opinions. The American public and the politicians who represent them are conducting their Reflections continued to page 6 Knights Of Columbus 5

6 Reflections continued from page 5 lives more and more as if God does not exist etsi Deus non daretur. A principal effect of this trend is a continuing effort to remove all influence of religion on public life, to limit religious freedom and restrict religious beliefs to private practice. As late as the 1990, only 8 percent of Americans said they had no religious affiliation. In 2012, 20 percent reported they had None. More ominous for the future is that onethird of the people under 30 reported identification with no religious denomination. Catholics are in the vanguard of this shift. While they represent one-quarter of the U.S. population, 35 percent of the Nones were raised Catholic. Based on adherence to a denominational teaching and religious behavior, the number of people in the None category is probably much higher. As an indicator of this, consider the large number of politicians who claim a religious affiliation Catholics are a prime example but do not act in accord with the teachings of their faith. The public mores, which affect political action and shape the nation s laws, are becoming, if not atheistic, at least agnostic. America s leaders are operating with disregard for the limits set by a Creator-God, without reference to a higher order that curbs the excesses of human nature. A democracy, that is, a government of the people, is no less immune from tyrannical actions than is a dictatorship or an oligarchy. It is religion that provides a transcendent authority for the rights of man that makes them unalienable and not dependent on the state or political system. It was a duly-elected parliament, the Reichstag, that allowed Hitler to rise to power and which gave him the authority to invade Poland, establish concentration camps, and carry out the Holocaust. In recent America, it was a duly-appointed Supreme Court that legalized the willful destruction of 55 million (and still counting) unborn children, regularly-elected state legislatures that are sanctioning same-sex marriage and approving physician-assisted suicide, and businesses operating within the law that are promoting the scourge of pornography. The evils of our time are not external threats to a moral society, but are becoming ingrained, built into the nation s political, economic and cultural structures. As dark as the future may appear, there is no need for despair. Pope John Paul II, in his book, Memory and Identity, reminds us: There is no evil from which God cannot draw forth a greater good. There is no suffering which he cannot transform into a path leading to him In the love that pours forth from the heart of Christ, we find hope for the future of the world. For thousands of years, the Jewish people have survived dispersion, suffering and persecution. They endured the Babylonian exile, slavery by the Egyptians, 40 years of wandering in the dessert, discrimination in the Middle Ages, the Nazi s final solution, and presently threats of annihilation from their neighboring nations. Similarly, for the last eight centuries, Poland has been overrun from the east and from the west, partitioned several times, occupied by foreign powers, subjected to efforts to destroy its culture, and even ceased to officially exist for 123 years, but it still continues. The Jewish people and the Polish nation have survived not because of military prowess, diplomatic finesse, or organizational strength, but because of strong religious convictions which permeated their cultures. This is the essence of the long-term survival of a people. Regardless of present efforts to make America a secular nation and the trials that may ensue, we should be confident about the future, placing our faith in God and relying on his grace. Pope Francis, through example and exhortation, is showing us the way to live. In his homily on Palm Sunday, 2013, he counseled: Never give way to discouragement! Our is not a joy of having many possessions, but from having encountered a Person: Jesus, in our midst; it is born from knowing that with him we are never alone, even at difficult moments, even when our life s journey comes up against problems and obstacles that seem insurmountable Christ s Cross embraced with love never leads to sadness, but to joy, to the joy of having been saved and doing a little of what he did on the day of his death. * Knights Of Columbus 6

7 Insurance Agent's Message Bob Callaway, LUTCF, FICF The Value of Life Insurance for Children. As a father, you worry about your children and do many things to protect them. We try to raise them right and make sure they are prepared to become adults. But have you ever thought about buying life insurance on your child? When you insure a child, you are protecting his or her future. Did you know that one out of every six adults get rated, postponed, or denied for insurance coverage? If you purchase a policy for your child from the Knights of Columbus, it guarantees that more insurance can be purchased for that child without proving insurability. Unfortunately, as fathers we don t have a crystal ball to tell us the future of our children. Your child could eventually have a rare disease, cancer, or be overweight. Did you know you can purchase a child s policy, in many cases, for less than $10 a month? I ve heard it said that people don t want to profit from the death of a child, so they won t purchase coverage on their children. God forbid something tragic happens, those funds can come in handy at a time when finances will be the last thing on a parent s mind. I have never heard a story about someone who regretting buying coverage on a child. Contact me today to discuss the many policy options for child plans, including 10- and 20-Pay life insurance.* Fraternally, Robert J.
