2 Grand Knight Message continued from page 1 interested in doing with us to serve our parish. We will do our best to make ourselves easy to identify in order that you can come to us and share your view. Brother Knights, may I invite you all to wear the pin you received when you joined our order, at least at church services, so you can be easily identified? Let me express my heartfelt gratitude to my brother Knights for choosing me to lead our Council in the coming year. I promise to do my best to continue the tradition of good work established by our still young Council. I need your support and the support of our parish community. Let me say a great thank you to our beloved Pastor, Msgr. Mellone, and to his team, Father Greg who is leaving us, but will be close to my work place!-, and our Deacons Reverend Mr. Mukri and Reverend Mr. Bond, on whose support I know I can always rely. Thank you all and God bless you Vivat Jesus.* Chaplain's Message Assoc Chaplain Rev. Mr. Kevin Mukri Knights Resemble St. James On July 25, we celebrate the feast day of Saint James the Apostle. He is often called Saint James the Greater because another younger apostle was named James. Saint James was a fisherman. As he was mending his nets with his brother Saint John and his father Zebedee, Our Lord called James and his brother John and they immediately left their father and followed Him. Our Lord gave the name Sons of Thunder to Saint James and Saint John probably because they were headstrong, hottempered, and impulsive. Both brothers early on showed their lack of understanding of His mission when they asked that He let one of them sit on His right and the other on His left when He came into His glory. Our Lord s reply was can they drink of the cup He would drink of? The brothers replied that they could. We know that Saint James would soon drink of the cup. Saint James was singled out by Our Lord in many ways and given special insight into His mission. Along with Saint Peter and Saint John, Saint James was present at many important events. He was a privileged witness to the raising of the daughter of Jairus, Our Lord s Transfiguration, and the agony in the garden at Gethsemane. Saint James deserted Our Lord during His passion and death. Yet he was chosen by Our Lord to be one of the twelve apostles, given the mission of proclaiming the good news, and given authority to heal and cast out demons. Saint James drank of the cup in 42 AD, as detailed in the Acts of the Apostles, when he was beheaded by order of King Herod Agrippa I, grandson of Herod the Great who attempt to murder the infant Jesus by killing the Holy Innocent. Saint James was the first of the Twelve to suffer martyrdom, and the only one of the Twelve whose death is recorded in the New Testament. Like Saint James, we are called to spread the good news to our family and friends. Like Saint James, we were given great gifts and seen the glory of God in our lives. Like Saint James, we have a temper and sometimes forget our spiritual responsibilities as we pursue worldly gain. But also like Saint James, we can always refocus our efforts to what really is important and lead all to Christ. And if we do, like Saint James, we too can be called saints. Saint James the Apostle, pray for us.* District Deputy's Message District Deputy Dr. Celso Barrientos, PGK. PFN Worthy Grand Knights of District 11 and Dear Brothers: Greetings! 4 Reflections Lawrence P. Grayson The Fault Lies with Catholics If great things are not done by Catholics in America, the fault lies surely with themselves not the republic -- so said Archbishop John Ireland, a leading prelate of his day, in Now 120 years later, it is clear that Catholics are failing both the republic and themselves. They are forsaking the nation in not bringing the virtues taught by their religion to bear on issues of public concern. They are faithless to themselves because in their consuming drive for material success, they are abandoning fundamental precepts of their faith. America is plagued with sins of abortion, cohabitation, same-sex marriage, dissolution of family life, destruction of embryonic stem cells, contraception, pornography, and a growing acceptance of assisted suicide and euthanasia. Yet, if professed Catholics truly practiced their faith, this would not be. Today, 25 of the 99 currently seated U.S. Senators and 136 of the 435 members of the House of Representatives identify themselves as Catholics. In addition, a Catholic serves as Vice President, another as Speaker of the House of Representatives, five of the eight continuing Justices of the Supreme Court are Catholic and a sixth has been nominated for the Court, and several Cabinet members claim Catholicism as their religion. Coupled with these attainments in the political arena are the gains 68 million Catholic Americans have achieved in business, the professions, the media, education, and other areas of national life. With the degree of influence that follows from this preeminence, the culture of this country, its laws, customs, public attitudes and behaviors should reflect a greater morality. There should not be an acceptance of actions such as homosexual marriage that are counter to natural law, or of practices such as abortion that violate the humanity and dignity of the person. populace. Only by ignoring what they profess to believe could 54 percent of the Catholics who voted in the last Presidential election cast their ballots for a candidate whose positions on abortion, gay marriage, and embryonic stem cell research are in direct opposition to that of the Catholic Church. Too many professed Catholics relegate their faith to an occasional Mass only 23 percent attend weekly -- and the rest of the time exhibit a practical atheism, living as if God has no effect on their lives. They are willing to ignore and even deny the Church s teachings, and have so compartmentalized their minds that they can say, I am personally opposed to abortion (or, you name the evil), but will not deny others from having one. After all, in our pluralistic society I must be tolerant of other people s views and not judge their behaviors. This attitude of misguided toleration treats all belief systems as equal, and as such holds nothing sacred. It leads to is a national culture based on the lowest common system of morals, which is operationalized in common law. Religion is treated as a matter of opinion, and so is to be considered private to each person. This disposition is palatable because it imposes no obligation on the individual to publicly live the faith, and does not interfere with one s drive for material success. It is, however, insidious and an opiate to one s beliefs in and practice of religion. As Hillaire Belloc, in Survivals and New Arrivals, wrote, the modern mind undermines religion, not in a direct manner as would a heresy, putting forth doctrinal propositions that could be discussed and accepted or rejected. Rather, it does so through a change of mood. [I]t acts in a fashion wholly negative. It is not an attack, but a resistance. It does not exercise an active effect opposed to religion It rather renders religion unintelligible It dulls the faculty of appreciation, and blocks the entry of the Faith. What Catholics need is a re-evangelization to their beliefs. They must learn once again what it means to be Catholic, to understand the timeless truth of its doctrines, to develop the moral values and commitment to live their lives in accord with the faith. But the mores of the country warrant these transgressions because too many professed Catholics are willing to compromise their faith. They do not truly live as Catholics, even if they abide by obligatory devotions. Their faith does not affect their ideas, attitudes, choices, decisions and actions, whether related to matters of public affairs, their drive for monetary success, tastes in entertainment, or the way they set priorities for living. In all of these instances, True faith rejects the main messages of American culture: that the primary object of human effort is material gain; that success means the accumulation of wealth; that the world is all about us. As Archbishop Charles Chaput pointed out in his book, Render Unto Caesar, authentic religious conviction Catholics as a body are indistinguishable from the general Reflections continued to page 5 Knights Of Columbus 4
5 Reflections continued from page 4 means accepting the truth that we need Jesus Christ in our lives that he is our only salvation; that his gospel is the only way to live; and that his church is our mother and guide. These interior acts of faith are not empty pieties; when sincere, they will always have external, public consequences. Archbishop John Ireland It is only when Catholics become well-informed in their faith and fully live by its beliefs that they can hope to change the secular world. The Catholic faith is more than a set of dogmas to be accepted; rather it is a way of life, a way whose ends are not the temporal comforts of this world, but to fulfill the reasons we were created so that we can gain an eternity in the kingdom of God.* District Deputy Message continued from page 2 Seminars will be held at the new Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD. This is the one convenient to our District and the Grand Knights will receive the notice. This is the season for installation of council officers. District 11 will have three council installations in July and two in August. All the members and their wives are encouraged to participate at the installation of officers and be parts of the celebration. This is one way to show our support and appreciation of our chosen officers. Remember they have taken awesome responsibilities and they can use all the support. My very first subject for the start of the new Columbian year is the same old topic that will keep our Order strong membership. Remember, we are all recruiters. Every Knight of Columbus should carry a Form 100 with him all the time and be ready to give it to an eligible Catholic man that you meet. Offer him the experience of a lifetime. Be a Knight! We will all be very busy during the summer months. With installations, picnics, family vacations, and of course our jobs, there does not seem to be enough time. However, our services in the Knights of Columbus are commitments that we do because we are Catholics and followers of Jesus Christ. These should make us proud and inspired. We wish you all the best. Remember, We are called to serve. Jesus, we trust in you. * Monsignor Wells Message [From the Pastor s Desk, Spiritual Reflections by Msgr, Thomas M. Wells] Forgive Us Our Trespasses As We Forgive October 8, 1995 A man came by the rectory one recent afternoon to pay back fifteen dot tars that we had given him for gas earlier. Since it was obvious that his financial condition had changed very little, I told him to keep the money; I forgave his debt. In some way, I guess I showed him mercy; but, of course, it was not my money and I did not have to replace the fifteen dollars out of my pocket. Real mercy is costly. When Pope John Paul went into that jail in Rome years ago and embraced the man who nearly killed him, the cost must have been tremendous. Not only did the Pope have to overcome his own anger, but he also had to risk that his assailant might reject the overture of forgiveness. I have often thought that as the Pope prayed the Our Father while he was recuperating, he must have been prodded as he prayed forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. He recognized that if he wanted to experience the mercy of God in his own life, he must be willing to extend that same mercy to one who had hated him enough to try to kill him. The ancient Hebrew language had only two thousand words in its vocabulary. However, in that small number of words, there were four different ones that we would translate with our word mercy. There is no way around it: from the time of Adam until this day, we stand before God in need of that mercy. I will sometimes hear a person in Confession say, I am a good person, Father, but..., almost as if what they are about to confess has nothing to do with the sins for which Jesus died. We want to see ourselves as good; we want others to see us in the same way. It is most uncomfortable for us to recognize that the only way we will slip into heaven is because of the mercy of God. Only the person who sees the need for mercy in his own life can really be merciful. I do not mean the attitude that says from a position of strength, Yes, I know what a pitiful person you are, but because I am so good, I deign to show my power by being merciful. Rather, must our attitude be that of Christ who, when He read the heart of the woman caught in adultery, said nothing to her about her evil or His mercy, but simply told her to go and to sin no more. That merciful person, who accepts the wisdom to read hearts as Jesus read them and to treat people as mercifully as did He, will obtain mercy both here and hereafter.* Knights Of Columbus 5
