Pastor s Ponderings Christmas: Growing in Godliness The five-year-old girl and her dad went together to the church early every December to see the outdoor Nativity scene on the front lawn. This was the third year they had gone together on this special father-daughter outing. The little girl looked down Christmas Caroling 3 Children s News 4 Advent Music 5 Youth News 6-7 Calendar 8-9 Birthdays 10 Anniversaries 11 Women s News Bus Ministry 14 New Year s Potluck 15 at the baby Jesus in the manger on the other side of the wood fence. Then she looked up at her dad and exclaimed, Baby Jesus looks the same as he did last year and the year before that. Isn t he ever going to grow up? Our Christian Walk is an evergrowing, ever-maturing, everdeepening relationship with God through Jesus Christ that leads us into more and more loving relationships with other people. The Christmas Story is only the 1

2 beginning of the journey. Do we know that rest of the story? 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:11-15 The Christmas Story does not end in the manger. Jesus exchanged the wood of the manger for the wood of the cross as he grew and matured in his understanding of God s plan for him that would change the course of history for all people. I pray we will be God s Christmas People all year long as the Gift of God s love in Jesus comes to us and through us on its way to others, and that we all will grow up, maturing in our understanding and our acting to bring peace on earth for all people. 3 CHRISTMAS CAROL GATHERING The next Western Rocky Mountain Emmaus Montrose/Olathe Gathering will be Christmas Caroling on December 10 th at 3:00 pm. Any and all interested persons are invited to join us for caroling (you don t have to be part of Emmaus to participate!). We will meet at the church and carpool to Brookdale Sunrise Creek Senior Assisted Living Center. We will sing beginning at 3:30 pm. Wear a Christmas stocking hat or some other holiday attire to brighten the occasion. We will return to the church for fellowship and a soup/ chili supper. 5 Advent Music at Noon Concert Series to start at the end of November! Music at Noon Advent Wednesdays 12:00 12:30 p.m. Fill the heart of your week and day with some celebratory seasonal music. Bring a brown bag lunch, a friend, or just your Christmas spirit. A variety of musical styles and performers will be featured. 6 Young People s News For 5th-8th graders, high school students & young adults! Santa s Cabin December Fundraiser This is our last big fundraiser for camp and next summer s mission trips. There are many opportunities for you to work and earn some money. We can t do something like this without everyone s help so please sign up! The shifts are set up online with signup.com. 12 Upcoming Happenings United Methodist Women Big THANK YOU to all who helped in making the 2016 Down Home Bazaar a success!! Thank you for all donations of time, items, food, energy and support. The bazaar was very successful in that we have made approximately $7,600 which will be put towards the mission projects UMW helps to support. Come celebrate Christmas with us Dec. 14. The winner of the Quilt given away is Sherri Ward of Pueblo West who was in Montrose visiting her in-laws Jack and Nadine Ward. 14 Calling for Bus Driver Support Hello and a Christmas greeting to all! Wow, where has the year gone? I am writing this note to ask for people to assist with the Bus Driver Duties. We are flexible; you can do every other month, once a month, pick certain Sundays during the year, just that we need help. There are only two consistent drivers at this time and the folks that need a lift to church and enjoy our community are needing our assistance for the other two Sundays. It is not a hard job. On Sundays when I drive, I usually take folks home and am sitting in my living room by 2-3. I start around 10 am. So, there is nothing to it. You can have a team (2-3), do it alone, or bring friends. It is a time commitment when you do the deed. But this activity ministers to folks that don t have any other means to come to church. 15 ^WHAT A GOOD IDEA!!^ As there will be only one worship service on New Year s Day, it has been suggested that we turn it into a fellowship opportunity which always means food and have a potluck brunch after worship January 1. We are not planning this as to how and what to bring. It will turn out just fine. If you have time to do a breakfast casserole, fine. Put it in the oven, go to church and come back and get it out. If you have some holiday goodies that you would like to share, do so. Surely someone will be tired of sweets and think fruit is a good idea. Bring something, or not, but come and ring in the new year with your church family. 15
