2 NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS TODAY HAPPY MOTHER S DAY! Sunday, May 13, 2012 SUNDAY, MAY 13, 2012 THE SUNDAY OF THE SAMARITAN WOMAN WELCOME ARIADNE ZOE STONESTREET! On Friday, May 11, 2012, we welcomed Ariadne Zoe Stonestreet to the Church Universal by the Sacrament of Baptism. Ariadne is the daughter of John and Anastasia Stonestreet and baby sister of Sofia Ekaterina Stonestreet. Anastasia s father, Nicholas G. Bacalis, was the celebrant. Godparents are Craig and Sandy Henriquez. Welcome Ariadne! MOTHER S DAY FLOWERS The GOYA will be honoring the mothers in our community with a flower as they exit the nave at the completion of the Divine Liturgy. Her children will rise up and call her blessed Proverbs 31:28. SUNDAY SCHOOL AND GREEK SCHOOL RECOGNITION Today, Sunday, May 13, 2012 Please join us in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the Divine Liturgy for a short presentation to recognize our Sunday School and Greek School students. Scripture tells us Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Let s celebrate the success of the entire community (parents, teachers, and students) in the catechism of our children so they may have a strong religious foundation to guide them throughout their lives. Light refreshments are provided by the Philoptochos and the Sunday School Teachers HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES St. Barbara would like to congratulate our High School Graduates: Alexis Pantermakis, Ariana Mariakakis, Michael Kontos, and Toni Pappas. Each graduate will be presented with an Orthodox Study Bible (donated by the Philoptochos) as part of the Sunday School Recognition program following the Divine Liturgy. Best wishes to our future leaders! CONGRATULATIONS! Our congratulations go to Michael Dennos who graduated Saturday, May 12 from Saint Andrews University with a BFA in Creative Writing. TRIANGLE ORTHODOX CHORALE CONCERT CD "Exciting news from the Triangle Orthodox Chorale... professionally recorded CD's will be available of the "Concert of Holy Paschal Music" that was held at St. Barbara's on April 6. 3 ST. BARBARA GREEK FESTIVAL This Friday - Sunday! May 18, 19, and 20, 2012 OUR ANNUAL GREEK FESTIVAL IS THIS WEEK! Our festival is a very important event for our parish. Please don't see it simply as another fundraiser, but as a part of your stewardship. We are all asked to give of our time, talents, and treasure to our parish. For those of you who are new to St. Barbara you will find when you work at our festival you will have an opportunity to meet and get to know your fellow parishioners better, and this enhances and strengthens the bonds we have with each other and our parish family. -Johnny Mariakakis, Festival Co-chair THIS WEEK GREEK FESTIVAL SUNDAY MAY 20, 2012 Please note the time change for the Sunday of the Greek Festival. On Festival Sunday, May 20, the liturgy schedule will be as follows: Orthros - begin at 8:15 AM Liturgy - begin at 9:00 AM Liturgy should be complete by 10:15 AM. Everyone should have enough time to be at the festival for opening up his or her stations at 11:00 AM. HAPPY SPRING! NEXT WEEK NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 20, 2012 Dear Parishioners, Sunday of the Blind Man MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND Friday, May 25 - Monday, May 28, 2012 UMD NEWS! I would like to thank our college students, the Kalfas family, the Hallyburtons from St. Philip's, and Eddie Quaynor for helping cook and serve dinner for 275 of our fellow community members at Urban Ministries on Wednesday, May 9 th. Philoptochos will be cooking and serving the next dinner on July 11 th. It has been very rewarding to help establish this important ministry at St. Barbara s and I would like to thank all members who have cooked casseroles, served dinners and donated money over the past year and a half. Now that the ministry is up and running and other personal commitments have emerged, I am looking for someone to take over the coordination of this effort to serve 6 meals per year at Urban Ministries (one meal every other month). Please contact me directly by May 30 th so that I can let Urban Ministries know if St. Barbara s desires to continue this ministry past July. for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and in prison and you visited me.. 4 COMING SOON PAN-ORTHODOX OUTREACH Sunday, June 3, 2012 Calling on all Orthodox Parishioners of various ethnic backgrounds! As part of the Special Events and Social Projects Committee, our mission is to reach out to Orthodox parishioners of various ethnic backgrounds as well as those who have converted to Orthodoxy. We are hoping to promote a more inclusive, cohesive, and vibrant Orthodox community. We will be celebrating our Second Annual Pentecost Fest on Sunday June 3, 2012 by sponsoring an International coffee hour/luncheon. We are asking that you prepare a dish representative of your ethnic background and/or culture to share with all our St. Barbara s parishioners. Please contact Helen Koutouzakis at hdkoutouzakis@nc.rr.com to let her know what dish you will be preparing so that it can be labeled appropriately. Maria Frangakis (919) A TASTE OF GREECE Saturday, June 23, 2012 The Parish Council has selected Saturday, June 23 for hosting another "A Taste of Greece" event. The reason for this date being selected one month after our festival is so our parish can extend an invitation to our regular festival attendees to come and see our beautiful church. The "A Taste of Greece" will be limited in scope and effort...we will only be featuring a limited menu of gyros, souvlaki, and hot dogs at the grill, a pastry booth, a bakaliko booth, leftover souvenirs, and, of course, host tours and tours of our sanctuary. Clay Davis, Hesha Gamble, Clint Wilkins Interim Dean, Larry Dooley (second from right) Dr. Peter Marinos was inducted into the prestigious Engineering Academy, the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers & Scientists on the evening of April 26, This honor recognizes Dr. Marinos as one of Clemson s most accomplished engineers. The induction banquet and ceremony to honor Dr. Marinos were held in the Madren Center Ballroom on the Clemson University campus in Clemson, South Carolina. This top award and the induction to the Academy were made in the presence of top Administrators and past recipients, as well as Dr. Marinos family and close relatives. The Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers & Scientists recognizes outstanding engineers and scientists who are Clemson alumni, or non-alumni having a strong association with Clemson. These individuals are chosen for their outstanding career success, contributions to community, and notable contributions to engineering and science. Members of the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and Scientists illustrate by example the many accomplishments that can be attained through talent, hard work, and dedication. Since 1995, only forty-seven exceptional individuals have been inducted into the Academy. The founder of Clemson University was the first member of the Academy, receiving this award posthumously. Dr. Marinos is number forty-eight. Membership in the Clemson Academy represents the very highest honor bestowed on Clemson engineers. Congratulations to Dr. Marinos on receiving this prestigious award!

5 AHEPA NEWS On May 6, last Sunday after Liturgy, members of our AHEPA Durham chapter donated a "Lifeline" defibrillator to St. Barbara's parish. As AHEPA president Andrew Christakos said - as he presented the lifesaving device to Parish Council president Alec Alexiades: "We hope we never have to use it - but we thought it would be very prudent to have it here, just in case." Following the above presentation, our local AHEPA's Scholarship chairman, brother Lou Tsipis, made the local scholarship awards to three high school graduates who belong to our St Barbara community: a scholastic award scholarship to Toni Pappas, and student achievement scholarships to Ariana Mariakakis and Alexis Pantermakis. Congratulations! We wish Alexis, Ariana, and Toni much success in their future studies. In addition, our local AHEPA chapter wanted to recognize the meaningful, spiritual work and activities done by the Orthodox Christian Fellowship [OCF] student groups at Duke University and at UNC-Chapel Hill. President Andrew Christakos handed modest donations to our students Alexa Waters, representing the OCF at UNC, and Alex Mariakakis, representing the Duke OCF. Keep up the good work at OCF - and count on continued help from your AHEPA. PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Xristos Anesti! Christ is Risen! Thank you to all who donated to the Autism Collection. $350 is being donated to support Autism research. Duke Pediatric Blood and Bone Marrow Unit Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday June 14.
