2 TODAY SUNDAY, JANUARY 27, 2013 THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY OF LUKE Zacchaeus Meets Jesus A SPECIAL SUNDAY AT ST. BARBARA Today, Sunday, January 27, 2013 Matins 9:00 a.m. Vesting and the Preparation of the Gifts 10:00 a.m. Several Sundays ago, our students were taught about the Bread of Offering, the Prosforo that is prepared and used for Communion. Father Stavroforos read a story and Dena Paliouras showed how the dough is prepared, the seal is used and the bread is baked. On that day, the students made a Prosforo to be used at an upcoming Divine Liturgy. Today Father Stavroforos is planning a special presentation for our Sunday School and will use the students Prosforo, showing them how it is prepared for the Divine Liturgy. He also will vest in front of the students so they can see how the vestments are put on, and he will say the accompanying prayers that go with the vesting of each garment. The schedule for today will be slightly altered to accommodate the presentation. Matins will begin at 9:00 a.m. The Vesting and the Preparation of the Gifts on the Solea will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Great Doxology and the Divine Liturgy. It is hoped that many of our adult parishioners will attend to learn about the vesting of garments and the prayers that are said behind the altar before Divine Liturgy. The students also will present the names of the living and the departed for commemoration. THIS WEEK PRESENTATION OF THE LORD IN THE TEMPLE Saturday, February 2, 2013 Matins/Orthros and Divine Liturgy 9:00 a.m. NEXT WEEK NEXT SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2013 THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY OF MATTHEW JESUS TEACHES ABOUT THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS... 6 ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM THIRTIETH ORATORICAL FESTIVAL Introduced in 1983 nationally by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions: Elementary Division for students in grades 4 6 (held locally only) Junior Division for students in grades 7 9 Senior Division for student in grades The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year. All eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which is the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Fund provides college scholarships to the top speakers. In 2012, the top three speakers of each division received college scholarships of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000. This year, each Honorable Mention speaker was awarded an ipad2. Hellenic College offers The Chrysostom Scholarship to each parish s top senior division speaker. The Chrysostom Scholarship provides 100% of tuition for the recipient s first year of study, and, based on a GPA scale, up to 80% of tuition for three additional years For more information: ORATORICAL FESTIVAL TOPICS Junior Division (Grades 7 9) 1. Considering the Lord s words to His disciples, If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all (Mark 9:35), discuss the relationship between service and leadership. 2. Discuss the importance of participating in the life of the Church in light of Jesus teaching in John 15:5, I am the vine, you are the branches. 3. In the Resurrection Service, the priest proclaims, Come receive the light. Discuss the place of light in the Orthodox Tradition. 4. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22 23). Discuss how we can, with the help of the Holy Spirit, produce this fruit in our lives. 5. In Psalm 103/104, God s care for the natural world is praised. Select elements from the psalm and discuss how they may help us grow in our Faith. Senior Division (Grades 10 12) 1. The Prophet Micah says, He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8). Discuss how this passage has inspired many Christians to acts of service. 2. In 313 AD, St. Constantine the Great proclaimed the Edict of Milan, which allowed Christians to practice their faith freely. What did religious freedom mean then, and what does it mean for people of faith today in countries where violent religious persecution occurs? 3. Discuss the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian in light of today s culture. The Prayer of St. Ephraim Lord and Master of my life, cast away from me the spirit of laziness, idle curiosity, love of power and vain talk. But grant me, Your servant, the spirit of moderation, humility, patience and love. Yes, Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not to judge my brothers and sisters. For You are blessed forever. Amen. 4. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Social websites, apps, and so on are constantly present in our lives, making it easy for us to share bits and pieces of our lives with many people. How do you let your light so shine using these widely available social and other media? 5. Your hands have made me and fashioned me; Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments. (Psalm 118/119, verse 73). Discuss how this passage can guide us in a time when we constantly seek to alter the way we look, act, and live. 7 Feast of the Three Hierarchs and Greek Letters Day January 30 The Feast of the Three Hierarchs, Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint John Chrysostom, on January 30, is celebrated in conjunction with the Greek Letters Day as the Church recognizes in them the superb combination of Hellenic language and culture with Orthodox Faith and life. The Three Hierarchs lived in the 4 th century Byzantium, a time when the Church, after the edict of Mediolanum in 312, was free to express her faith in multiple ways. It was within this context that the Three Hierarchs produced their great works in the fields of theology, philosophy, rhetoric and education, superbly using and even enhancing the Greek language. When we examine the work of Saint Basil the Great, we immediately can see that he was a person of extraordinary education in all scientific fields, a giant in theology and a master of the Greek language. He recognized the tremendous importance of a solid classical education as a factor in the cultivation of one s intellect and exposure to cultural and educational values. His famous Address to Young Men On How They Might Profit From Greek Writings, remains an irreplaceable guide of how to deal with and how to maximize the spiritual profit from the study of classical Greek literature. Saint Gregory the Theologian also has been a superb example of a master of an amazing Greek education. In his extensive theological and poetic works, we encounter an unprecedented usage of the Greek Language. He was so proficient in the various forms of Greek language that he even was able to create new words in order to express more accurately Orthodox theology, thus earning him the title, Theologian. Likewise, it is no coincidence that the Church honored Saint John Chrysostom with the title Golden-Mouth on account of his brilliant rhetoric and the extraordinary way in which he employed the Greek language. Saint John Chrysostom, with the thousands of pages of exegesis on the Holy Scriptures, is still as contemporary today as he was in the 4 th century. His biblical exegesis, as well as his many sermons, are indicative of the tremendous effort of Chrysostom to promote real and substantive education among his people. Looking at the example of these Three Pillars of Orthodoxy we begin to understand the great value of Hellenic education and furthermore its importance in our lives. These Ecumenical Fathers and Teachers not only beautified the Church with their passionate pastoral care and sanctity, but also enhanced Greek language, theology, philosophy, rhetoric and poetry, as they focused on the message of the Gospel, the teachings of the Church and the centrality of Christ the Lord. We are called to embrace this model of superb education and great faith as an expression of our deep love, commitment, and understanding of God s divine word. The combination of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs with the Greek Letters Day constitutes a challenge for us contemporary Greek Orthodox people: A challenge to honor our Orthodox Faith and our Hellenic language and culture in the most advanced and strong ways. And God, the source of wisdom and love, the God of the Three Hierarchs will certainly be with us in successfully responding to the challenge. With paternal love in Christ, + DEMETRIOS, Archbishop of America (2012) THE PRESIDENT S CORNER Parish Council Meeting Highlights Thursday, January 17, 2013 Newly elected 2013 officers of the Parish Council: President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Assistant Treasurer An appeal to the Archdiocese concerning the 2013 increase in the annual allotment for our church is being prepared.
