4 The Last Judgment, 15th c., Aleppan Workshop, Monastery of Our Lady of Balamand, Balamand, Lebanon FEBRUARY 2012 TRIODION CHEESEFARE WEEK Monday - Saturday, February 20-25, 2012 SATURDAY OF THE SOULS Saturday, February 25, 2012 FORGIVENESS/CHEESEFARE SUNDAY (right) (Last day to eat cheese & dairy) Sunday, February 26, 2012 Old Triodion Manuscript GREAT LENT BEGINS Monday, February 27 DIVINE LITURGY OF THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 6:30 p.m. THE TRIODION Expulsion from Eden Sunday, February 5 - Saturday, April 14, 2012 What is the Triodion? The Triodion is a Liturgical book of our Church. It is used by the clergy, chanters and faithful from the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee until Holy Saturday morning of Holy Week. The Triodion gets its name from a part of the morning service of Matins/Orthros (Όρθρος). Mid-way through Orthros the chanters and people begin chanting the Canon (various hymns that are chanted about the Feast day or Saint of the day). They usually have eight odes (i.e., eight sets of hymns). However, in the Lenten period, there are only three sets of odes. Because of the three odes (or τρείς ωδές) the book took on the name Triodion, and this period of the Liturgical cycle became known as the Triodion. - FORGIVENESS/CHEESEFARE SUNDAY SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2012 Last day to eat cheese & dairy DIVINE LITURGY OF THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 6:30 p.m UMD NEWS! 7 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LOCAL AHEPA CHAPTER Congratulations to our local AHEPA chapter, which is featured in the Winter issue of The AHEPAN Magazine. SATURDAY OF THE SOULS ΨΥΧΟΣΑΒΒΑΤΟΝ February 25, 2012, 8:30 a.m., Orthros & Divine Liturgy/Teaching Liturgy March 3, 2012, 8:00 a.m., Orthros & Divine Liturgy Please list the names of your loved ones who have fallen asleep in the Lord whom you wish to remember on the Saturday of the Souls. AHEPA Chapter 277, Durham, N.C. - Pursuant to our Supreme President s call for outreach to the wider community, the chapter connected with the Urban Ministries of Durham - dedicated people who run a sizeable shelter and kitchen for the temporarily homeless. On the evening of September 14, a dozen AHEPA brothers cooked and served a complete meal for the largest number of people in the shelter, about 250 plates. In addition, the chapter decided to purchase a defibrillator for the new building of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. Parishioner Dr. Ted Pappas advised us to first become trained in CPR which can help determine if a person might need an EAD (external automatic defibrillator). Following his advice, the chapter s newly appointed Health Committee, let by Brothers Dr. Art Christakos, Alec Alexiades, and Larry Odzak, connected with Duke University Medical Center, and organized a CPR class on October 1, The AHEPAN magazine, Winter Issue, AHEPA Family Chapter News, pages 27-8, In addition, in The Literary Corner page of The AHEPAN, under Constantinople s History Captured through Personal tale, our AHEPA Brother Larry Odzak reviewed a new book, CONSTANTINOPLE: the Beautiful City and the Destruction of its Greek, Armenian, and Jewish Ethnic Communities, by Foti Jean-Pierre Fotiu. Published by Durham, N.C.: Monograph Publishers, 2011 Reviewed by Brother Lazar Larry Odzak PhD The AHEPAN magazine, Winter Issue, The Literary Corner, page 11 Why do we pray for the dead? It is true that the dead are judged by how they lived. Generally, the Church teaches our future in eternity is based on our faith, life, deed, virtues, love, compassion, goodness, (or their absence) in this life, before our death. Yet, since we are never fully sure of the place of each soul before God, and because God Himself is merciful and loving, we pray for any help which might come to the soul of the deceased. Fr.
