Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church 8306 NC HWY 751 Durham NC News & Announcements October 7, rd Sunday of Luke Gregory the IlluminatSergius & Bacchus the Great Martyrs of Syria 10/7/2018 Polychronios the Martyr 10/7/2018 Julian the Presbyter & Caesarius the Deacon 10/7/2018 John the Hermit of Crete 10/7/2018 Jonah of Manchuria 10/7/2018 NEWCOMERS AND VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME Sunday Worship Schedule: Matins 9:00 am & Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. To Our Visitors and Guests We welcome you to worship with us today, whether you are an Orthodox Christian or this is your first visit to an Orthodox Church, we are pleased to have you with us. Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, all are invited to receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. After the Divine Liturgy this morning please join us in the Church Hall for fellowship and refreshments. Please complete a Visitor s Card before you leave today and drop it in the offering tray, or give it to one of the parishioners after the service, or mail it to the Church Office. 1
The Sunday Epistle Reading Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians (11:31-12:9) BRETHREN, The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me; but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped from his hands. It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such a one I will boast, yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me. And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exaltend above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lored three times that it might depart me. And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. I Στίχ. Πρὸς Κορινθίους β' τὸ ἀνάγνωσμα (είναι απο 11:31-12:9) Ἀδελφοί, 2
The Sunday Gospel Reading The Gospel According to Luke (7:11-16) At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 3

After years of dedicated service, Helen Paliouras is retiring as our Social Hall/Coffee Hour coordinator. We need volunteers for a social hall/coffee hour committee to be responsible for setting up and cleaning up for coffee hour, assisting their fellow parishioners who host coffee hour and managing rental of the social hall. Everyone enjoys the wonderful fellowship and tasty treats that bring us together every Sunday socially after the Divine Liturgy. Please help if you can; we need a coordinator and assistants so that we continue to enjoy a cup of coffee and each other s company every Sunday. Helen will teach you everything you need to know! Please contact Father Stavroforos or Helen Paliouras if you are able to help. 7

Simple Stewardship Considerations for St Barbara Father Stavroforos has set a goal of 160 Stewardship Families for calendar year As of now we have 136 Stewardship Families which is 85% of the goal. (Note: Stewardship operates on a calendar year basis and not on a rolling 12-month cycle. We need everyone s contribution to meet our bills.) We are in the final quarter of the year and we need everyone s support to reach and exceed the goal. Please sign up now if you haven t and encourage your family and friends to join us as well. St Paul in His Second Letter to the Corinthians (9:6-11) wrote Bretheren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. for God loves a cheerful giver. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. Here are some interesting facts to also consider. DID YOU KNOW 1. Did you know it costs about $860 per day to operate St Barbara based on our $314, budget? The Mortgage and any capital expenditures are extra. The 2018 Building Fund budget of $165,160 is about $425 per day. 2. Did you know it costs about $1925 per Steward Family to operate St Barbara based on the total $314, budget and the 160 Stewards goal? The Mortgage and any capital expenditures are extra. The 2018 Building Fund budget of $165,160 is about $1050 per steward. 3. Did you know we ve had to divert the Festival proceeds to meet operating expenses? They could be best used to meet our mortgage. 4. Did you know we need a minimum of $1,100 per stewardship family to meet the net budgeted 2018 Stewardship fund raising budget goal of $176,000? 5. Did you know that the average pledge plus non-pledged stewardship contributions in 2018 to date is around $800+ per stewardship family? This is more than a $300 per Stewardship Family shortfall. 6. Did you know that the average Stewardship / pledge contribution is about 1% (one per cent) of estimated St Barbara s Stewards Family income? This compares with the 10% of your income that the Bible suggests we should be giving. 7. Did you know that if EVERYONE raised their 2018 Stewardship contribution to 2% or more of their income we could meet the 2018 operating budget? Many Stewards already do, where are you? 8. Did you know that we could be very close to meeting ALL our operating and mortgage needs if we ALL gave at least 3+% each of our income to support our Church and its ministries? 9. Did you know we have no deep pocket Parishioners who fund any budget shortfall? 10. Did you know we DO NOT get any funds from the Archdiocese, Metropolis or government entity (as in Greece)? If fact, we are assessed approximately $20,000 per year to support the Archdiocese. THANK YO 9
2018 Stewards through September 2, 2018 Our 2018 Stewardship Drive continues. At this point we have 136 Stewards or 85% of the goal. Thank you to all who have pledged and contributed. Are you included as a Steward? Please give thoughtful and prayerful consideration to completing and returning your Stewardship Fund form as soon as possible. Also can you please increase your contribution. Stewardship is the primary funding source of our operating obligations and Church s Ministries. Your Church needs your support. THANK YOU.
