Our St. Barbara family extends its congratulations to Tom and Zoe McElligott Kash who welcomed their baby girl, Georgia Louise Kash, into the world on Thursday, February 16, They are all doing well! ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN STUDY CLASS Today 12:15 p.m. Congratulations! Our St. Barbara family also extends its congratulations to Christopher and Andrea Koufopoulos who welcomed their son, Caiden Andrew Koufopoulos, on Sunday, January 22, Caiden weighed 9 lbs 2 oz and was 21 inches long! Proud grandparents, big sister, and aunt and uncle are Father Andrew and Presvytera Bonnie Koufopoulos, Lily Marie Koufopoulos, and Tatianna and Steven Quick. Bonnie said, The whole family is doing well including big sister Lily. Join Dr. Ross Sauve in the Conference room around 12:15 (or after Coffee Hour) for a very interesting and informative Orthodox Christian Study class. LITURGICAL COLORS You may notice that the colors used on the following pages are now purple. At the Forgiveness Vespers this evening, liturgical colors change from bright gold to the dark purple of Great Lent. This is during the Prokeimenon when the theme of the new day is announced, thus the announcement of the beginning of the Great Lenten season. 3 GOYA - SOUPER BOWL OF CARING GOYA is collecting non-perishable food items throughout the month of February for the Souper Bowl of Caring. The food will be donated to a local food bank. SACRED LENTEN CONCERT REHEARSAL Saturday, March 3, 2012, 9:45 a.m. The first rehearsal for the Sacred Lenten Concert (at St. Barbara on April 6) is Saturday, March 3, at 9:45 a.m. at St. Barbara. Subsequent rehearsals are scheduled on March 17, 24, and 31, all at St. Barbara. NEXT WEEK SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS! Sunday, March 4, 2012 Sunday March 4th is Youth Sunday as well as the Sunday of Orthodoxy. All Sunday Church School students will be sitting in the first few rows for the entire service with their fellow classmates and teachers. As it is also the Sunday of Orthodoxy, we ask that you please help your child bring an icon to church for the procession. No worries, if your child comes to church without an icon, we will do our best to find one for him/her to borrow :) That being said, if you have an extra icon to share with another child for the service, please bring it :) Thank you so very much for your help as we want this experience to be a valuable participatory experience for all students. In other news, the classes of the Sunday Church School had a food drive contest for the Souper Bowl of Caring and they all did a fantastic job bringing in bags and bags of non-perishable foods! The grades 3-5 class won! Great Job! They will have an Ice Cream Party as their reward this Sunday- Parents of students in Grades 3-5, please make sure your kids are in church this week, 2-26, for the yummy party! :) Sophia D. Caudle, PhD NEXT SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2012 THE SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY YOUTH SUNDAY SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY VESPERS AND LENTEN DINNER SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2012, 5:00 p.m. Our St. Barbara parish is honored to host the Sunday of Orthodoxy Vespers Service for all Orthodox Christians in our area on Sunday, March 4, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Following the Vespers Service, a light Lenten dinner will be served in the St. Barbara Fellowship Hall. Please join us for this beautiful ecumenical service where the combined voices of the all of the priests and clergy in attendance fill St. Barbara with the lovely hymns. (See the following page)

Qualifications and applications are available on-line and from local AHEPA members. BLOOD DRIVE: Please sign up to be a part of the first St. Barbara Blood Drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross. We need a minimum of forty (40) people to pledge to donate a pint of blood. Once we turn in the sign-up sheet, we will be able to schedule a blood drive here in our church hall. Your donation may be needed to help save someone s life. The sign-up sheet is located in the church hall on the table outside Father Jim s office. If you have any questions please contact Andrew Christakos at Why do we pray for the dead? It is true that the dead are judged by how they lived. Generally, the Church teaches our future in eternity is based on our faith, life, deed, virtues, love, compassion, goodness, (or their absence) in this life, before our death. Yet, since we are never fully sure of the place of each soul before God, and because God Himself is merciful and loving, we pray for any help which might come to the soul of the deceased. Fr.
