We will meet in the large pavilion at Halmich Park between 13 Mile and Chicago Rd. Hopefully it will be warmer this year! Following our 10:30 a.m. Worship Service, we will have a potluck lunch. Hot dogs and beverages will be provided; bring a side dish or dessert to share and your own table service. You may want to bring a lawn chair too. We will have a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Firebowl vespers will follow at dusk, and then it's time for roasting marshmallows on the campfire. On Sunday morning we will have a "camp breakfast" in the Fellowship Hall starting about 9:00 a.m. Then we will continue the camping theme in our 5th Sunday

2 Over the course of the next six weeks, we will be looking at the Gospel According to Dr. Seuss as we explore the wisdom of Dr. Seuss in light of the Sermon on the Mount. Hope your invite a friend to join Sermon Series: August 26 September 30 (6 weeks.) is the Gospel According to Dr. Seuss 5 Lessons in Life from Dr. Seuss I am a huge Dr. Seuss fan. I love the funny characters. I love the wonderful rhymes. Most of all, I love the lessons his stories teach both young and old. What many people don't know is that Ted Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) was a huge advocate for social justice in our world. Several years ago, I came across The 5 Lessons in Life from Dr. Seuss. I personally think there are a lot more than five, but it's a start.) Know that I did not put these together and I would normally give credit where credit was due, but I could not find that information. Lesson 1 Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You. How often do we try to be someone we are not? Yet God created you to be you and me to be me, and that's really who we should try to be, the best you and me we can. Lesson 2 Why fit in when you were born to stand out? Good question. Now each of us are different and some of us are comfortable blending into the background, but every once in a while, God calls us to stand out in life. Embrace that call. Lesson 3 You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. I love this one. Life is a journey and we get to decide which road we are going to take. God gave us the gift of free-will and we get to choose. We can control our life and the direction it goes in or we can continue to allow others to dictate who we are and where we're going. God planned it that way. Lesson 4 Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. This doesn't mean that we can just spout off mean things. Scripture calls us to be kind and to speak the truth in love. This is a reminder that we are to speak that truth in love instead of saying what we think people want to hear. It means that it's alright to say that you're having a bad day or that your feelings were hurt or that maybe today you're not "Fine." Lesson 5 Today I shall behave, as if this is the day I will be remembered. I love this one. I wonder if our choices would be a little bit different if we looked at each day as if it were the day we would be remembered for. If we believed that, we might make it count. We might be a little more generous with our time, our talents, and our things. If today was going to be one recorded in the history books, would you choose to live it differently? Lesson 6 UNLESS. Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing's going to get better. It's not. (I think they missed this very important lesson.) We can complain about the world all we want, but if we are not willing to do something about it, it's never going to change. We (each and every one of us) have the power to make the world better. That poser comes from our willingness to "care a whole awful lot."

5 Monday Night Bible Study The Summer seems to be evaporating all too quickly, I hope yours has gone well. It s time to think of Fall Bible Study. As strange as it seems We will start again in about five weeks (where did the Summer go). I ask you to consider the fall class Scripture and the Wesleyan Way. It s a brand new study, centering on John Wesley s view of the bible and his relation to God. The Bible was central to John Wesley s faith and the Christian movement he founded In this study we will discover a Wesleyan approach to the Bible and Christian life using Wesley s own words. As we study the Bible with Wesley you will hear his call to live a real Christian life and be inspired to respond to this call with faith and boldness. The study will meet 6:30 pm Monday September 10 th through November 5 th. Again, I ask you to consider this study. If it is something you would be interested in please contact Mike Rivard by (mrivard1949@gmail.com), by phone ( ) or sign up on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall at Church. Please let me know by September 1 st, using one of the three methods mentioned above, so I can secure the necessary material for September 10 th. Sign up today in the Fellowship Hall! Messy Church is in need of clean squeezable bottles (like catsup bottles, etc.), clean spray bottles, and squirt guns. We are also looking for new sponges. Thanks in advance for your donations. These items will not be returned! MCREST WEEK****NOVEMBER 11-18, 2018**** Romans 12:13 * Matthew 25:31-46 How quickly the days fly by. As August winds down and September and October quickly follow, we will soon find ourselves again in November, and I am sure you know what that means.mcrest!! One can hardly believe that it is time to think about MCREST and the wonderful mission we at Warren First accomplish by welcoming the homeless into our church for a week. Since 2000 (this is our 19 th year! WOW) we have been a part of MCREST, the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team, providing breakfast, sack lunch, dinner and a hospitable, safe and warm overnight shelter for 30 women and children, who without our care would be out in the cold. The MCREST office interviews and screens those who come into the program and the guests are searched for prohibited items and screened for alcohol each night in order to maintain a safe environment for all guests and volunteers. The MCREST office and its staff provide areas of guidance and some areas of assistance for the guests, but from 6:00 pm until 8:00 am each day, we, the church, care for them. Volunteers from our congregation are asked to assist with transportation, laundry, set up/take down, hospitality (providing a presence for both supervision and social interaction), cooking/serving meals, food donation and other areas. Detailed descriptions of responsibilities of these and other areas are listed here in Tower Talks and will also be posted in the Program Center. SIGN-UP WILL BEGIN SUNDAY, October 7, MCREST WEEK****NOVEMBER 11-18**** is an undertaking for the whole church and YOU are important to the success of our mission.

7 The Music Department will be coming off hiatus in September. We have openings in all groups, except the Bell Choir. We encourage you to check out the ensemble that works best for you. Death Former member, Wayne Perry died on July 26, 2018 at the age of 87 years in Elkhart, Indiana. He was born on June 18, 1931 in Huntsville Twp., Illinois; the son of Russell G. Perry and his wife Letha M. Clark. Wayne served in the United States Army and following that service he continued working for the Government in quality control as an engineer. He retired from Williams International in 1996 and moved from Warren to DeBary, Florida where he lived until He was active in his local churches, loved to travel, play golf and spend time boating at his cottage. Wayne is survived in this life by his son David (Donna) Perry; son-in-law Joe Wierzbowski, and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy of 43 years, and his daughter Janet Wierzbowski. His service was held at Warren First UMC on August 1 with the Rev. We have a new project which is to replace the ripped panel on the north ramp. I was told one panel costs $500, which we don t have. Can we reach our goal before winter? I believe so! Coins and paper bills are gladly accepted. Recycle Your Bottle Caps Sherry Descamps is collecting all sizes of bottle caps, all colors. This is an on going collection which will be given to the nuns Downriver in Taylor. What will they make you ask? The caps will be recycled and used at the base of playground equipment and to make new recycled benches. Drop off your caps in the basket in the church s kitchen. Celtic Cross Church Presbyterian Church is looking for a part-time Secretary for their church office from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday s, located on 10 Mile Rd.,

WHAT: Help guests bring their belongings up the steps from the lower level to their sleeping area TRANSPORTATION WHAT: Drive guests to various destinations every morning and return each evening WHEN: 5:00a.m. 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. WHERE: MCREST office, Macomb Mall, job, other bus lines, appointments, etc. LAUNDRY WHAT: Wash towels & bedding Wash guests personal items Wash blankets last day (Sunday, November 18 at a laundromat) WHEN: Designated weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. Blankets at Laundromat BED MAKERS WHAT: Make beds with sheets and blankets WHEN: Sunday, November 11 2:00 p.m. WHO: Anyone willing and able to make beds which are on the floor SET UP/TAKE DOWN WHAT: Unload/load truck - Set up sleeping, dining area, make beds, and put up signs WHEN: - Saturday, November 10 time to be determined - Sunday, November 11 times to be determined - Sunday, November 18 before 8:00 a.m. WHO: Volunteers should be advised that there will be lots of bending and heavy lifting with these tasks! 10 HOSPITALITY WHAT: - Responsible for maintaining order during night shifts. This includes the awake evening hours as well as overnight. WHEN: - From Sunday evening through following Sunday morning 3 shifts each night 6:00 p.m. 10:30 p.m. ***10:30 p.m. 3:00 a.m. ***3:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. *Please consider signing up for a double shift (10:30 p.m. 8:00 a.m.) if you are able. It is much easier for scheduling. WHO: Women, Men, Husband/Wife teams (at least 1 man & 2 women required for each overnight shift.)
