Trinity Marsh Street Mankato, MN (507) mtolive@mtolivelutheran.org Pastors John J. Petersen & Luke Ulrich Principal Larry Rude Evangelical Lutheran Synod Welcome! In the name of our risen Savior we welcome you to Mt. Olive and thank you for worshipping with us. If you are a guest, please fill out a Guest Card (found in front of you in the hymnbook rack) or sign our guest book in the entry. We invite you to come and worship with us again soon. Large Print copies of the order of service from the ELS Hymnary are available from the usher stand in the back of the sanctuary. For the Hearing Impaired: Our facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. Explanation of the Week: When the beggar Lazarus died, he was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom, for he was truly Abraham's seed. He believed in the Lord, and the Lord "accounted it to him for righteousness" (Gen 15:1-6). The name Lazarus means "God is my help." The unnamed rich man, on the other hand, did not love and trust in God, for he evidently cared little for the beggar at his gate; and, "he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?" (1 John 4:16-21). He who loved and trusted in possessions and prestige died and was in torment in Hades (Luke 16:19-31). Repentance and faith are worked only through Moses and the prophets, (that is, the Word of God), for it points us to Christ. Through His death and resurrection, we are brought to the comfort of life everlasting.

Order of Worship: Rite One I. The Service of Preparation (We prepare ourselves for worshiping God by acknowledging our unworthiness to stand before Him, and by receiving His forgiveness through absolution (forgiveness). We respond with joy.) ~ Prelude Preservice music & opportunity for prayer (See Prayers for Worship ELH p. 40) ~ Opening Prayer (ELH p. 41) P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ s sake. Amen. ~ Entrance Hymn 13 Dearest Jesus, Draw Thou Near Me ~ Confession of Sin Admitting our sinfulness to God (ELH p , I) P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us: have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us a true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. ~ Kyrie Eleison Lord, Have Mercy (ELH p ) C: O God the Father in heaven, have mercy upon us. O God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy upon us. O God the Holy Ghost, true Comforter, have mercy upon us. ~ Absolution God s declaration of forgiveness (ELH p. 43, II; Mk 16:16) P: Hear the holy and comforting Word of our Lord: Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 2

Lift up your hearts! By the authority of God and of my holy office I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ~Gloria in Excelsis Deo (ELH p ; Luke 2:14; John 1:29) P: Glory be to God in the highest C: And on earth peace, good will toward men. All glory be to God on high Who hath our race befriended! To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended; God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall dwell on earth again; O thank Him for His goodness! ~Salutation The people s blessing for the Pastor s work (ELH p. 45) P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. ~Collect The congregation s prayer of the day (ELH p. 45, p. 158 #82) P: Let us pray: O God, the Strength of all who put their trust in You: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do nothing good without You, grant us Your Holy Spirit, that we may please You both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. II. The Service of the Word (After receiving the forgiveness of sins, we thanked God by singing His praises and praying to Him. He now increases our faith through His holy Word which we hear through the Lessons and especially through the Sermon where God s Word is applied to our lives today.) ~Old Testament Lesson Deuteronomy 6:4-13 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build, houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you 3

did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant when you have eaten and are full then beware, lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name. ~Epistle Lesson I John 4:16-21 We also have come to know and trust the love that God has for us. God is love. Whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. In this way his love has been brought to its goal among us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are just like Jesus. There is no fear in love, but complete love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who continues to be afraid has not been brought to the goal in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar. For how can anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, love God, whom he has not seen? This then is the command we have from him: The one who loves God should also love his brother. ~Apostles Creed Confession of faith (1 st Service) (ELH p. 68) P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. The Order of Holy Baptism (2 nd Service) (Holy Baptism has the power to work the new life of faith in the hearts of sinners. This regenerative washing with water through the Word is intended for all people, since all including infants and children are members of a sinful human race and are in need of God s grace and forgiveness. Jesus has also commanded that all nations be baptized. Confession of sins and Absolution are a return to, and a renewal of, one s Baptism. Matt. 28:19, John 3:5, Eph. 5:26, Titus 3:5, Acts 2:38-39) 4

~Baptismal Hymn 241 He That Believes and Is Baptized ~Baptism of Leah Grace Gullixson (ELH p. 133ff) ~Chief Hymn 409, vv. 1-3, 6 Thee Will I Love, My Strength, My Tower ~Holy Gospel Lesson & Sermon Text (ELH p. 46) Luke 16:19-31 There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. A beggar named Lazarus had been laid at his gate. Lazarus was covered with sores and longed to be fed with what fell from the rich man s table. Besides this, the dogs also came and licked his sores. Eventually the beggar died, and the angels carried him to Abraham s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus at his side. He called out and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in misery in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, and you are in misery. Besides all this, a great chasm has been set in place between us and you, so that those who want to cross from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us. He said, Then I beg you, father, send him to my father s home, because I have five brothers to warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Abraham said, They have Moses and the Prophets. Let them listen to them. No, father Abraham, he said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. Abraham replied to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. ~Sermon Message A Snapshot of Two Lives 1. It shows a terrible problem. 2. It presents a saving solution. ~ Offering and Hymn 411 Christians, Come, in Sweetest Measures (The members of Mt. Olive give offerings as a joyful response to what God has given them. These offerings support the work of Gospel ministry in our community and around the world. Visitors: Please do not feel obligated to participate in this offering. We ask you to fill out a Welcome Card and place that in the offering plate.) ~Prayers & Lord s Prayer 5

Collect In appreciation of God s gift (ELH p II) P: Let us give thanks and pray: We thank You, Almighty God, that You have built Your Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Head Cornerstone. Grant that we may be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable unto You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. ~ Benediction Final blessing for God s people (ELH p. 59; Num 6:24-26) P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen, amen, amen. ~ Closing Hymn 410 Glory Be to God the Father ~ Closing Prayer (ELH p. 59) P: O Lord, we render unto You our heartfelt thanks that You have taught us what You would have us believe and do. Help us, O God, by Your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ, to keep Your Word in pure hearts, that we thereby may be strengthened in faith, perfected in holiness, and comforted in life and death. Amen. ~ Postlude Opportunity for prayer & to greet one another!
