Explanation of the Week: When the beggar Lazarus died, he was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. For he was truly Abraham's seed. He believed in the Lord, and the Lord "accounted it to him for righteousness" (Gen 15:1-6). The name Lazarus means "God is my help." The unnamed rich man, on the other hand, did not love and trust in God. For he evidently cared little for the beggar at his gate. And "he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?" (1 John 4:16-21). He who loved and trusted in possessions and prestige died and was in torments in Hell (Luke 16:19-31). Repentance and faith are worked only through Moses and the prophets-that is, the Word of God, for it points us to Christ. Through His death and resurrection, we are brought to the comfort of life everlasting.

5 ~Sermon Text Ephesians 3:2-12 Surely you have heard about the administration of God s grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God s holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God s grace given me through the working of His power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to His eternal purpose that He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 15 Building On Our Mission Building Campaign - Update On Monday, June 12, the Chair of the Building Committee, Bill Bohning, met with the Church Council and presented them with the response of the congregation to date for the Building On Our Mission Building Campaign. That presentation included the number of pledges received to date and the total financial support those pledges represent: Total informational folders and pledge forms given out 320 Total pledge forms returned 109 (34% of the total given out) Total dollars pledged - $424,444 (42% of the one million dollar goal) Based on the current level of participation and financial support from the congregation as represented by the numbers above, the Building Committee s recommendation to the Council was to extend the fundraising timeline to October to provide the opportunity for all members to submit their Faithful Intent Pledge Forms. Support from the congregation will be reassessed at that time and another recommendation will be made to the Council, which could include the suspension of the project in its entirety if the necessary support is not received. A motion was made and approved by the Council to accept the Building Committee s recommendation. Next Steps: Results of the fundraising campaign to date, along with the Building Committee s recommendation to extend the fundraising timeline as stated above, will be shared with the voters at the Annual Voters Meeting on June 25. Fundraising subcommittee members will develop a strategy/plan to contact all members who have not yet responded to the project. Building committee members will conduct research into several foundations and grants and assess potential grant opportunities. Again, please know that your response to the project, regardless of your stance on the project or your ability to contribute to it financially, is essential in helping determine the next course of action. If you support the project, but are unable to contribute financially to it at this time, please submit a pledge form stating so. 16 As we prepare to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, we will be including in our weekly bulletins a brief section taken from the Lutheran Confessions. The Lutheran Confessions, found in the Book of Concord, identified and summarized the Biblical beliefs of the Lutheran church and distinguished it from other churches. Since these writings are drawn from the source and norm of our beliefs, that is, they are drawn from God's unchanging Word found in Holy Scripture, we continue to profess these teachings as our own. We encourage you read and prayerfully consider these important teachings of our church. The Church is not established by a man-made council or by any pope or emperor s will. The Church is established by God through His Gospel. AUGSBURG CONFESSION, VII. [THE CHURCH] It is also taught among us that one holy Christian church will be and remain forever. This is the assembly of all believers among who the Gospel is preached in its purity and the holy sacraments are administered according to the Gospel. For it is sufficient for the true unity of the Christian church that the Gospel be preached in conformity with a pure understanding of it and that the sacraments be administered in accordance with the divine Word. It is not necessary for the true unity of the Christian church that ceremonies, instituted by men, should be observed uniformly in all places. It is as Paul says in Eph. 4:4-5, There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism. 16
