Trinity Marsh Street Mankato, MN / (507) church@mtolivelutheran.org Pastors John J. Petersen & Luke Ulrich / Principal Larry Rude Welcome! In the name of our risen Savior we welcome you to Mt. Olive and thank you for worshipping with us. If you are a guest, please fill out a Guest Card (found in front of you in the hymnbook rack) or sign our guest book in the entry. We invite you to come and worship with us again soon. Large Print copies of the order of service from the ELS Hymnary are available from the usher stand in the back of the sanctuary. For the Hearing Impaired: Our facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. In Expectation of the 500 th Anniversary: LARGE CATECHISM, III. [THE SECOND PETITION] Thy kingdom come. This we ask, both in order that we who have accepted it may remain faithful and grow daily in it and in order that it may gain recognition and followers among other people and advance with power throughout the world. So we pray that, led by the Holy Spirit, many may come into the kingdom of grace and become partakers of salvation, so that we may all remain together eternally in this kingdom which has now made its appearance among us. God s kingdom comes to us in two ways: first, it comes here, in time, through the Word and faith, and secondly, in eternity, it comes through the final revelation. Now, we pray for both of these, that it may come to those who are not yet in it, and that it may come by daily growth here and in eternal life hereafter to us who have attained it.
Order of Service: Rite Two (p.60) I. Service of Preparation ~Hymn 547 Jesus, Brightness of the Father ~Choir Come, Sing Unto The Lord Hans Leo Hassler Come, sing unto the Lord, sing Him a new song. Come sing unto the Lord, all the earth. Come, sing unto the Lord, praise His holy name. Declare His glory among all the nations, And His salvation from day to day unto all the people. Praise Him forever. Declare to all people now His wondrous salvation and His marvelous deeds among all people. Sing unto the Lord a new song! ~Invocation (p. 60) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. ~Confession of Sin (pp , form II) P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: Who made heav n and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us; have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 2
P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His onlybegotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. C: Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen. ~Salutation (p. 66) P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. ~Collect (p. 66) P: Let us pray: O Lord, we beseech You, let Your continual mercy cleanse and defend Your Church; and because it cannot continue in safety without Your help, preserve it evermore by Your help and goodness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. II. Service of the Word ~Old Testament Lesson Genesis 28:10-22 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you. Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. And he was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven! Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father s 3
house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You. ~Hymn 252 vv. 1, 4 I Walk in Danger All the Way ~Gospel Lesson Revelation 12:7-12 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time. ~Hymn 545 vv. 1, 3, 4, 7 Lord God, We All to Thee Give Praise ~Choir What God Ordains Is Good Indeed J. S. Bach What God ordains is good indeed, for all life well providing. The will of God is best for me, the ground of my confiding. My faithful God, on every road You know the way unfolding; Your strong hand I am holding. What God ordains is good indeed. My Friend will never fail me On danger's path, in deepest need, when death in grief shall veil me. My God so dear, O draw me near; In loving arms now hold me; At last in light enfold me. ~Hymn 545 vv. 10, And Thus, Our God, Still at This Day 4
~Gospel Lesson & Sermon Text Matthew 6:24-34 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. ~Sermon Theme Worry Not! Be Happy & Content God Is with Us! ~Offering & Hymn 468 All Depends on Our Possessing (Visitors: Please place guest cards in offering plate) ~Apostles Creed (pp ) P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. 5
~Prayer of the Church (pp ) P: In peace let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. (Special petitions are included) P: For, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord have mercy. P: O Lord, heavenly Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit we faithfully remember the sufferings and death of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation. We praise You for His victorious resurrection from the dead. We thank You for the strength of grace and majesty of faith which He bestows on the Church by virtue of His ascension to Your right hand, where He intercedes for us as our Advocate and High Priest. Grant that the Holy Spirit will gather us into the company of all the faithful from the ends of the earth, so that we may celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. In Your mercy receive our prayers. Deliver us and preserve us. To You alone we give all glory, honor, and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore. Amen. ~Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. ~Benediction (pp ) P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen ~Hymn 406 vv. 2-3 Yea, Lord, Twas Thy Rich Bounty Gave 6
