Trinity Marsh Street Mankato, MN / (507) / church@mtolivelutheran.org Pastors John J. Petersen & Luke Ulrich / Principal Larry Rude Welcome! In the name of our risen Savior we welcome you to Mt. Olive and thank you for worshipping with us this morning. If you are a guest please fill out a Guest Card (found in front of you in the hymnbook rack) or sign our guest book in the entry. We invite you to come and worship with us again soon. Large Print copies of the order of service from the ELS Hymnary are available from the usher stand in the back of the sanctuary. For the Hearing Impaired: Our facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. Explanation of the Week: Our Lord wept over Jerusalem for the destruction that would soon come upon her. For she did not recognize the time of God's visitation in Christ, who had come to bring her peace (Luke 19:41-48). Through His prophets God had consistently called His people to turn from their deceit and false worship. "But My people do not know the judgment of the Lord" (Jer 7:1-11; 8:4-12). They sought to establish their own righteousness rather than receive Christ's righteousness through faith (Rom 9:30-10:4). So it was that God was in His temple to cleanse it, a precursor to the once-for-all cleansing from sin which He would accomplish in the temple of His own body on the cross. God grant us to know the things that make for our peace His visitation in the Word and Sacraments that by the Holy Spirit we may penitently confess "Jesus is Lord" (1 Cor 12:1-11).
Order of Service, Rite Two (p. 60) ~Hymn 76 Father, We Praise Thee I. The Service of Preparation ~Invocation (p. 60) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. ~Confession of Sin (pp , form I) P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: Who made heav n and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins. C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: I ask each of you, in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? C: I do. P: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in His name? C: I do. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. May He comfort your heart by His holy 2
Absolution, and strengthen you by His Sacraments, that your joy may be full. Peace be with You! C: Amen ~Introit P: Behold, God is my helper; C: the Lord is with those who uphold my soul. P: He will repay my enemies for their evil. Cut them off in Your truth. C: Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your strength. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore. Amen. P: Behold, God is my helper; C: the Lord is with those who uphold my soul. ~Kyrie Eleison (p. 63, form I) C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. ~Gloria in Excelsis Deo (pp ) P: Glory be to God on high: C: And on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise You, we bless You, we worship You, we glorify You, we give thanks to You, for Your great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the onlybegotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You take away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. You take away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For You only are holy. You only are the Lord. You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. ~Salutation (p. 66) P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. ~Collect (p. 66) P: Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, by Your Holy Spirit You have revealed to us the Gospel of Your Son, Jesus Christ: We beseech You so to enliven our hearts that we may sincerely receive Your Word, and not make light of it, or hear it without 3
fruit, but that we may fear You and daily grow in faith in Your mercy, and finally obtain eternal salvation; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. II. The Service of the Word ~Old Testament Lesson Jeremiah 7:1-7 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, Stand in the gate of the Lord s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who enter in at these gates to worship thelord! Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Do not trust in these lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are these. For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt, then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. ~Epistle Lesson (p. 68) 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. ~Alleluia (p. 67) C: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! 4
~Apostles Creed (pp ) P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. ~Hymn 207 vv. 1, 2, 4 Seek Where You May to Find a Way ~Holy Gospel & Sermon Text Luke 19:41-48 Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation. Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, saying to them, It is written, My house is a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves. And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him. ~Sermon Theme: "Knowing the Things That Make for Your Peace" 1. If they remain hidden, only destruction can result. 2. Christ reveals them and prepares us for peace. ~Offertory (pp ) C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from 5
me. Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen. ~Offering and Hymn 521 How Firm a Foundation (Visitors: Please place guest cards in offering plate) ~Prayer of the Church (pp ) P: In peace let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. (Special petitions are included) P: For, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord have mercy. P: O Lord, heavenly Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit we faithfully remember the sufferings and death of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation. We praise You for His victorious resurrection from the dead. We thank You for the strength of grace and majesty of faith which He bestows on the Church by virtue of His ascension to Your right hand, where He intercedes for us as our Advocate and High Priest. Grant that the Holy Spirit will gather us into the company of all the faithful from the ends of the earth, so that we may celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. In Your mercy receive our prayers. Deliver us and preserve us. To You alone we give all glory, honor, and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore. Amen. ~Lord s Prayer (pp ) C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the pow r and the glory forever and ever. Amen. ~Collect (pp , form I) P: Let us give thanks and pray: We thank You, Lord God the Father, that You have given Your only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. We thank You, Lord Jesus Christ, that You have borne in Your 6
sacred body all our sins, and by Your blood have blotted out all our transgressions. We thank You, Lord, the Holy Spirit, that You have created in our hearts true faith, that we know of nothing to trust for our salvation, except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. O God, grant us Your grace, that we may perfectly believe that all our sins are forgiven for the sake of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ, and so enlighten us by Your Holy Spirit, that, in the power of our Redeemer s death, we may day by day put off sin, and never forsake the Lord Jesus Christ, until we see Him face to face in life eternal. We ask it all in Christ s name. C: Amen. ~Benediction (p. 87) P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. 14 As we prepare to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, we will be including in our weekly bulletins a brief section taken from the Lutheran Confessions. The Lutheran Confessions, found in the Book of Concord, identified and summarized the Biblical beliefs of the Lutheran church and distinguished it from other churches. Since these writings are drawn from the source and norm of our beliefs, that is, they are drawn from God's unchanging Word found in Holy Scripture, we continue to profess these teachings as our own. We encourage you read and prayerfully consider these important teachings of our church. Sometimes we can trick ourselves into thinking that it s OK to commit little sins as long as we don t commit big ones. But if we are dishonest and steal a little here and a little there, then it is the same as if we took the sum total of all our stealing and dishonesty and did it all at once. There is no difference between little sins and big sins. LARGE CATECHISM, I. [THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT] LARGE CATECHISM, I. [THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT] You shall not steal. 224 For to steal is nothing else than to acquire another s property by unjust means. In a few words, this includes taking advantage of our neighbor in any sort of dealing that results in loss to him. Stealing is a widespread, common vice, but people pay so little attention to it that the matter is entirely out of hand. If all who are thieves, though they are unwilling to admit it, were hanged on the gallows, the world would soon be empty, and there would be a shortage of both hangmen and gallows Suppose, for example, that a man-servant or maid-servant is unfaithful in his or her domestic duty and does damage or permits damage to happen when it could have been avoided. Or suppose that through laziness, carelessness, or malice a servant wastes and neglects things to the vexation and annoyance of his master or mistress. When this is done deliberately for I am not speaking of what happens inadvertently and unintentionally a servant can cheat his employer out of thirty or forty gulden or more a year. If a thief had taken such sums he would be strangled with a noose, but the servant may even become defiant and insolent and dare anyone to call him a thief! 14
