In our service we gather before our almighty and saving God to offer Him our worship and praise. We also assemble to hear God s holy and powerful Word and celebrate His life-giving Sacraments. Through these means, God strengthens our faith and walks us ever closer to our eternal home with Him. Proclaim the Wonders God Has Done: Bethany Lutheran College became a co-educational junior college in 1927 when it was purchased by the ELS. At that time a high school department also was established which shared both the faculty and the dormitories. The high school was discontinued in Today, Bethany Lutheran College offers twenty-four majors, twenty-four minors, and eight pre-professional programs taught by seventy-five full-time and adjunct faculty. 2

CONFESSION P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. 5 please stand P: The Holy Gospel for the 6 th Sunday in Easter is written in the 16 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. John, beginning at the 23 rd verse. C: Glory be to You, O Lord. GOSPEL LESSON John 16:23-30 (ESV) In that day you will ask nothing of Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25 I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father. 29 His disciples said, Ah, now You are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that You know all things and do not need anyone to question You; this is why we believe that You came from God. 7 EPISTLE LESSON & SERMON TEXT Hebrews 7:23-28 T he former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but He holds His priesthood permanently, because He continues forever. 25 Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a High Priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for His own sins and then for those of the people, since He did this once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. 8 please stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH & LORD S PRAYER P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Brief silence P: Heavenly Father, You tenderly invite us to believe that You are our true Father and that we are Your true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask You as dear children ask their dear father. Keep us, we pray, steadfast in the faith, that we might ever cling to Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has overcome the world for us. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Almighty Father, keep this nation under Your care and bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to the other nations of the earth. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Merciful Father, extend Your compassionate and caring hand toward all who suffer tribulation in this sinful world, especially to the destitute, homeless and those impoverished in our inner cities. Fill us with Your compassion and care, that we might be doers of the Word and not hearers only, and use us as Your instruments of love to help and assist those in need. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Loving Father, look with mercy upon all those who are sick or suffering in any way [especially ]. Ensure that they receive the care they need and strengthen their faith, that they might hold fast to the sure and certain truth of the resurrection of all flesh for all those who look upon Your Son in faith. Lord, in Your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Eternal Father, we give You thanks for receiving all those who have gone to their heavenly reward before us and now rest from their labors. Keep us in that same faith, that together with them we may receive the promised inheritance of Your eternal Kingdom as fellow heirs with Your Son when He returns in glory on the Last Day. Last Sunday 211 of God s people came to worship and hear His holy Word. 54 attended Sunday School and Adult Bible Class. 140 received Holy Communion. Thank you to our PowerHour/ELC/Kindergarten students for singing at today s 11am service! STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE OF THE WEEK If nothing else, stewardship is a reminder that nothing I have actually belongs to me. 10

McDonalds donates 40% of all sales during our time slot to us; they also donate an additional 10% to Ronald McDonald House Charities. It s a great chance to take a night off from cooking, enjoy fun & fellowship, all while supporting your school and those in need. Please join us! MAY WORK LUTHERHAVEN Saturday, 5/12 9:00 am If you missed their annual All-church Cleanup Day last month, here s another chance for some fresh air and exercise. This month: downed trees to cut/split/stack, as well as floats/swim area marker lines to go out; and as always no shortage of things to clean/repair. JELLY BEANS WITH A MISSION due back NEXT Sunday 5/13 Time to finish refilling that empty jelly bean jar with your loose change so you can return it to church by NEXT Sunday (Mother s Day). All Bethany ladies are welcome, even if you haven t been able to participate in either group! *no-host=each lady pays for own meal LMSG AMMO CAN DONATIONS As Memorial Day approaches, our congregation s Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG) is asking for donations in support of our military men, women and their families. LMSG, a partnership of ELS and WELS veterans, is working to grow awareness of and bring Christian support to military members and their families in our congregations and beyond. By placing your gift in the AMMO can located in the narthex, you are supporting the work of local congregations that are ministering to nearby military families, the WELS European chaplain program and global broadcasts of Time of Grace to our military. The priestly blessing originates in Numbers 6: It is not a coincidence that the blessing of the Lord is pronounced three times to the people, acknowledging the Triune nature of our God. The illustration depicts Aaron blessing the assembly of Israel as well as Martin Luther pronouncing the blessing to the believers of his day. Just as Jesus blessed His disciples with upraised hands as He ascended into heaven, so the pastor lifts up his hands to impart the blessing of God above to His people below on earth. Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, we thank You that You come and speak to us during the Divine Service. As we leave the Divine Service each week, may we always remember that You are with us everywhere we go throughout the week also.
