Transfiguration 1123 Marsh Street Mankato, MN / (507) church@mtolivelutheran.org Pastors John J. Petersen & Luke Ulrich / Principal Larry Rude Welcome! In the name of our risen Savior we welcome you to Mt. Olive and thank you for worshipping with us. If you are a guest, please fill out a Guest Card (found in front of you in the hymnbook rack) or sign our guest book in the entry. We invite you to come and worship with us again soon. Large Print copies of the order of service from the ELS Hymnary are available from the usher stand in the back of the sanctuary. For the Hearing Impaired: Our facility is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask an usher for a receiver. Explanation of the Week: The Lord appeared to Moses in the light of the burning bush. (Ex 3:1-14) Later Moses' face would shine with the light of God's glory when he came down from Mount Sinai. (Ex 34:29-35) Now Moses and Elijah appear with Him who is the Light of Light Himself on the Mount of Transfiguration. (Mt 17:1-9) Jesus' glory as God shines with brilliant splendor in and through His human nature. By this epiphany, our Lord confirmed the prophetic word (2 Pet 1:16-21), revealing that He is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. He manifested His majesty as the eternal Son of the Father. And He wonderfully foreshowed our adoption as sons. For in this event we who have been baptized into Christ's body are given a glimpse of the glory that we will share with Him in the resurrection on the Last Day.

Order of Service, Rite Two (p. 60) I. The Service of Preparation ~Hymn 224 The Only Son From Heaven ~Invocation (p. 60) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. ~Confession of Sin (pp , form II) P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: Who made heav n and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us; have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His onlybegotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. C: Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen. ~Hymn 81 vv. 1, 2, 6, 9 O Splendor of God s Glory Bright 2

~Salutation (p. 66) P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. ~Collect (p. 66) P: Let us pray: O merciful and everlasting God, heavenly Father: We thank You that You have revealed to us the glory of Your Son, and let the light of Your Gospel shine upon us: We pray that You would guide us by this light that we may walk diligently as Christians in all good works, ever be strengthened by Your grace, and conduct our lives in all godliness; through the same, Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. II. The Service of the Word ~Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 61:10-11 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its bud, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. ~Responsory Hymn 16 From All That Dwell Below the Skies ~Holy Gospel (p. 68) P: The Holy Gospel for this week is written in the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the first verse. C: Glory be to You, O Lord! ~Gospel Lesson Matthew 17:1-9 Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James; and he led them up onto a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured in front of them. His face was shining like the sun. His clothing 3

became as white as the light. Just then, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them. Just then, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him. When the disciples heard this, they fell face down and were terrified. Jesus approached and as he touched them, he said, Get up, and do not be afraid. When they opened their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, Do not tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. C: Praise be to You, O Christ! ~Affirmation of the Baptism of Steadfast Theodore MacPherson (2 nd Service) ~Apostles Creed (pp ) P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. ~Hymn 223 O Wondrous Type ~Epistle Lesson & Sermon Text 2 Peter 1:16-21 To be sure, we were not following cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the powerful appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father, when the voice came to him from within the Majestic Glory, saying, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. We heard this voice, which came out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. We also have the completely 4

reliable prophetic word. You do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the Morning Star rises in your hearts, since we know this above all else: No prophecy of Scripture comes about from someone s own interpretation. In fact, no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were being carried along by the Holy Spirit. ~Sermon Theme: A Clear Manifestation of Jesus 1. Clear as to Who He Really Is. 2. Clear as to His Mission and Purpose. 3. Clear Still Today, to Us, in His Word. ~Offertory (pp ) C: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen. ~Offering & Hymn 225 With Trembling Awe the Chosen Three (The members of Mt. Olive give offerings as a joyful response to what God has given them. These offerings support the work of Gospel ministry in our community and around the world. Visitors: Please do not feel obligated to participate in this offering. We ask you to fill out a Welcome Card and place that in the offering plate.) ~Prayer of the Church (pp ) P: In peace let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. (Special petitions are included) P: For, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord have mercy. P: O Lord, heavenly Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit we faithfully remember the sufferings and death of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation. We praise You for His victorious resurrection from the dead. We thank You for the strength of grace and majesty of faith which He bestows on the Church by virtue of His ascension to Your right hand, where He intercedes for us as our Advocate and High Priest. Grant that the Holy Spirit will gather us into the company of all the faithful from the ends of the earth, 5

so that we may celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. In Your mercy receive our prayers. Deliver us and preserve us. To You alone we give all glory, honor, and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore. Amen. ~Lord s Prayer (p. 85) C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. ~Collect (p. 86, form II) P: Blessed Lord, since You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning, grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn and take them to heart, that by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. C: Amen. ~Benediction (p. 87) P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen, amen, amen. ~Closing Hymn 72 vv. 4, 6 From the Cross Thy Wisdom Shining Preacher: Pastor Luke Ulrich / Liturgist: Pastor John Petersen Organists: 1 st : Cassie Johnson / 2 nd : Mark DeGarmeaux 6

Building Committee Update The Mt. Olive Building Committee met with architect Bryan Paulsen on Thursday, January 25 and can now report the following to the congregation: 1. The loan commitment papers have been signed securing today's desirable interest rate. 2. Bryan Paulsen provided a TARGET (not definitive) timeline for the project from ISG which involves the new construction portion of the project. 3. We have now officially proceeded from the Schematic Design (Phase One) to the Design Development (Phase Two). This phase will involve the engineering, interior design, and architectural teams at ISG working together to research building system and material options to ensure that everything can be integrated easily into the overall facility plans. This phase is expected to continue through May. Architects and designers will meet as needed with the Building Committee as a whole and with the Construction Sub-Committee. Separate meetings will be held for those involved in the use of areas specific to the new construction areas. 4. Meetings with users of the existing spaces we will be remodeling ourselves will take place at a later date as work can t begin in those areas until the new construction is completed. 5. The Construction Documents (Phase 3) will take place in June through mid-july. During this phase ISG will create a full set of construction documents that encompass all plans and specifications for the project. These documents include the plans for civil engineering, architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering (HVAC & plumbing), and electrical engineering. 6. The Bidding Process (Phase 4) is scheduled to take place during the last half of July and possibly early August 7. The initial TARGET date for starting the necessary work involving the rooms behind the sanctuary is late August of this year with construction of the new narthex hopefully beginning sometime in September. 8. At this point, the TARGET date for the completion of the new construction is August or September of NOTE: the new kindergarten room is targeted to be completed prior to this date so it can be ready in time for the start of the new school year. 15

9. The remodeling of the existing areas that our congregation is responsible for will begin after they have been vacated and moved into their newly constructed spaces. Meetings with users of the areas that will be remodeled will take place well before any work begins to ensure that we do the best job possible in satisfying the needs of all users. It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember that these are TARGET DATES. It is equally important to bear in mind that these dates reflect the urgency of having our facility ready in the fall of 2019 when the larger classroom will become necessary for kindergarten. As was cautioned, this is a complex process with a lengthy timeline. Every effort will be made to keep the congregation updated along the way so please continue to watch for information on the website, Facebook, Sunday bulletins, and the Olive Press. And especially please continue to pray for all aspects of the Mt. Olive congregation and her members. 16
