1 Jesus Christ is the bridge between God and us. Worship Schedule September 2018 Keeping Christ Central in September Sunday, September 2, 2018 Worship at 9:00 a.m. It s Labor Day Weekend! One last respite before we plunge headlong into another year of Sunday School, worship, Confirmation, festivals, choirs, children singing, youth participating and that s just the church side of things. As such we grieve summer s passing. Did we get to take time away? Did we rest? Did we take time from worrying about everything we worry about? And now the future brings with it, its own worries and fears. Jesus says, It s okay. Do not worry. Strive more for what God promises, than what we think we must have. Luke 12: Wednesday, September 5, 2018 Worship with Holy Communion at 6:00 p.m. Sixth Grade Confirmation initial class, starts at 7:00 p.m. We again begin our trek through the story of the Bible. We often hear of these stories, but rarely do we hear them told. Yet, our lives, our values, and our most deeply held beliefs, are shaped and formed by stories, especially those in the Bible. In them we learn the wisdom of the ages as such become a guide through the maze and confusion of modern life. Tonight, we begin with the famous story of Noah and the Ark. Sunday, September 9, 2018 Worship with Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School begins again at 10:00 a.m. It s our Kickoff Sunday for another year of Sunday School. Yay! Thanks to the youth and their families for making faith in Jesus a priority in theirs and their children s lives. Thanks to the Sunday School team who organizes, leads and makes this time, a time of growing faith for all. Welcome! Also, join everyone for worship! Young folks, old folks everybody come and hear some Bible stories that you ve never heard before. (Genesis 6:5-22; 8:6-12; 9:8-17) Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Worship with Holy Communion at 6:00 p.m. 6 th Grade Confirmation at 7:00 p.m. Choirs begin practicing. This week our Focus reading is: Genesis 12:1-9, The Call of Abraham. Abram spends his golden years the time when most are relaxing and looking back on their lives to follow God s leading on a long and uncertain journey. He risks everything on the promise that the best is yet to come. The Bible and its story of God s promise now enters into the sphere of recorded human history in the lives of ordinary human beings, like Abraham and Sarah. What kind of God is this? Sunday, September 16, 2018 Worship with Holy Communion and Men s Choir at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. Blessing of Backpacks and Installation of Sunday School teachers. Those youth who will be affirming their baptisms (Confirmation) will be leading worship this morning. Often, I hear people muse, What would life be like without faith in God? Abraham lived most of his life, maybe with some kind of religious belief, but then, later in life, God chose him to be the one through whom God s saving of a wayward humanity was going to happen. In the same way, God chooses us to be the ones through whom God s salvation to the world will be known. As such we will never know what life without God will be like. That is some kind of miracle of faith. Come and be part of it. Wednesday, September 19, 2018 Worship at 6:00 p.m. 6 th Grade Confirmation and choirs at 7:00 p.m. Focus Reading: Genesis 39:1-23. The Old Testament in the Bible covers a lot of material and many, many centuries. In order to stay on task, we re going to have to hustle our way through. With the blink of an eye we find ourselves deep into the Joseph story. It is the longest continuous story in the Bible. Joseph s story is one thing after another. From favorite son, to despised brother, from slave boy to an official in Pharaoh s court. From business success to being falsely accused and unjustly jailed. From guilty brothers to forgiven family. How much fun is this? Come and be part of it. Sunday, September 23, 2018 Worship at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. Third Graders receive their Spark Bibles. Come and hear a portion of the Joseph story from the Book of Genesis. (Genesis 39:1-23) Joseph s unfortunate rejection by his brothers has eventually landed him in great favor with his Egyptian master... and his master s wife. Then being framed for an un-committed crime lands him in prison, but he is soon to find a place of favor there as well. Either Joseph is the unluckiest of men, or he is perpetually blessed by a God who continues to send fortune his way. CONT D ON INSIDE

So far, so good. But now, the Egyptian army advances ever nearer. How long will faith in their leader endure? Perhaps the better question is, who is really in charge here? Good question! Sunday, September 30, Worship at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. The 6 th Grade Confirmation youth will share in leading worship this morning. Please come and support them as we learn by doing. As we did on Wednesday, we jump into the middle of the Joseph story. God s promise works in and through human beings, sometimes in and through the craziness and brokenness of human life. Therefore, there must be hope for us too. God s love never fails. 3 Congratulations! The FAB loan is now paid off. Thank you everyone! We were able to pay off the loan due to the sale of the donated lot which was given to Central last year. We are now in the clear. God is good. We will celebrate the work and generosity of the congregation later this fall. In the meantime, we have a new project that will enhance the church facility, save energy and save in ongoing maintenance. Last month the church council approved the Lighting Project Objective: Replace the fluorescent lighting in the hallway, offices, sacristy, fellowship hall and kitchen with energy efficient LED fluorescent fixtures and bulbs. ***A sample can be seen by the men s restroom in the hall way. Benefits: These bulbs burn 75-90% less energy than the current older fluorescents. They have no ballasts which older fluorescents require. Ballasts burn out and need to be replaced periodically. Older fluorescent lights do not work without them. New LED s are maintenance free. They do not use ballasts. Older fluorescents need constant replacement bulbs. LED s last infinitely longer. The cost of LED s has dropped dramatically in the last year. Energy rebates from Focus on Energy and Excel would apply. What can you do now? Learn and understand how this may help the congregation. You may direct gifts to the Lighting project. The sooner we receive gifts the sooner we can begin this lighting upgrade, if the congregation deems this good and right. Thank you! Central Lutheran Church Council.

5 From the Pastor In Thanks for Concern and Kindness Sometimes life throws us little interruptions. We re busy. We re into our routines. We re planning for days ahead. Then wham! Down we go. In my case it was a set of broken ribs from a mountain bike (Fat tire bike actually) accident. Then a trip to the emergency room and nine days in the hospital to make sure everything was going to heal properly. Uff-dah! I would be remiss if I did not include special thanks to my wife Amy and my family, who dropped their work schedules and other priorities so to encourage me, help fill the time with their company and companionship and to fill my heart with gratitude for their love and caring. God is good. Sometimes life throws us these interruptions, and out of it comes a deep appreciation for the life we share and the concern we have for each other that makes life worth living. Amen. Keeping Christ Central, Pastor Rolf G. Morck Suddenly, I m not busy. My routines now don t matter, and it doesn t matter what I plan because I m stuck with a tube in my ribs and a call button as my only connection to the outside world. Probably the strangest of all, is that I m a pastor now getting a dose of my own medicine. I wasn t ready for that. People are visiting, sending cards, and then they asked to pray with me too. So much kindness, caring and concern. I know you all do that, but to be on the receiving end is a different experience. You care and that really matters. Even more so, I have experienced such firsthand. Thank you! Such caring and compassion carries with it a powerful message, that we matter and are appreciated. Sometimes in the busyness of life it is easy to think otherwise. Sometimes we may think we re just a number or a cog in a machine, that our worth is in what we do or accomplish. Yet kindness, when so expressed, becomes a word of grace. That no matter what we do, we don t deserve such grace, and still it just happens. It happens in a get-well card with prayers for healing. It comes in a visit as people take time out of their lives just to stop by for a bit and make life normal again. It comes in people asking, How can we help you? How humbling it is when others ask if they can pray for you and they do. Thank you all, for all your prayers. Yet, all is part of healing. I know my ribs will heal in time. But I am also thankful for the healing of faith that I am prayed for and cared about. Even pastors need a little reminding now and again about how the love of Jesus also includes them (insert, me ) expressed through the caring and concern of others. Thank you again. So, I hope the world knows that church of Jesus Christ is alive and well. Maybe a bit shy and reserved at times, but when unleashed becomes the power of God s love let loose in the world. May God continue to give us voices that pray, hearts that care and compassion that brings God s healing.
