1 Jesus Christ is the bridge between God and us. Worship Schedule FEBRUARY 2018 Keeping Christ Central in February Sunday, February 4, Worship with Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m. Souper Bowl Sunday and 3rd- 5th grade sing. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. Focus reading is: John 4:1-42, The Woman at the Well. It s a long conversation; the longest Jesus has with anyone in all the four gospels. There is so much wrong with this story of the encounter between Jesus and this Samaritan woman. Yet, living water prevails, bringing life and healing. Living water to quench our thirsty souls is what Jesus brings us as well. Wednesday, February 7, 2018 Worship at 6:00 p.m. 7 th and 8 th grade Confirmation is at 7:00 p.m. Focus reading is: John 9:1-41. This man Jesus has some nerve: claiming authority to heal a blind man, and on the Sabbath, no less! The Pharisees won t see past their own legalistic view and behold the true miracle. Who now is the one truly blind? Sunday, February 11, 2018 Worship with the Adult Choir at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. Transfiguration Sunday. It s the end of the season of Epiphany. We have this contrast between the traditional Transfiguration story of Jesus fully revealed on the mountain top, and in our reading from John s gospel, the Pharisee s total inability to see Jesus as the one who made the blind man see. In John s gospel seeing is believing. Time to open our eyes to see Jesus. Wednesday, February 14, 2018 ASH WEDNESDAY, the beginning of Lent. Ash Wednesday worship with Holy Communion at 11:00 followed by the Lenten luncheon. 6:00 p.m. Lenten Supper provided by the Confirmation youth with the free will offering going to support the youth going to Confirmation Camp at Luther Park. Thanks for your support. 7:00 p.m. Ash Wed. Worship with Holy Communion. Theme: Getting to Know Jesus: Baptism and Wilderness. Sunday, February 18, First Sunday in Lent. Worship with Holy Communion and the Praise Band at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. Focus reading is: John 11:1-44. It s a long story, this raising of Lazarus from the dead. It is also the event that puts the plan into action to kill Jesus. As modern folks, with bitesized attention spans, we are not used to hearing the whole story. I don t promise it will be easy, but this is the Bible after all and maybe if we pay attention, Jesus will get a rise out of us too. Wednesday, February 21, 2018 Lenten Worship at 11:00 a.m. followed by the Lenten Luncheon. Thanks to those who so generously provide those meals. The Lenten Supper is at 6:00 p.m. with Lenten worship following at 7:00 p.m. Today s theme: Getting to Know Jesus: Jesus Miracles. Sunday, February 25, 2018 Second Sunday in Lent. Worship with the Junior Bells at 9:00 a.m. with Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. Focus reading is: John 13:1-17. He s been their teacher, their leader and Lord for years, and now they share one final evening together. How will he bid them farewell? If you were expecting one last miracle or show of power, think again. Jesus washes the disciples feet. Wednesday, February 28, Lenten Worship at 11:00 a.m. followed by the Lenten Luncheon. The Lenten Supper is at 6:00 p.m. with Lenten worship following at 7:00 p.m. Today s theme: Getting to Know Jesus: The Greatest Commandment.

2 Lent at Central From the Pastor Lent the word literally means spring. Lent is a time of spiritual renewal and rebirth for Christians and their faith communities. This year we are going to work on renewing our faith by getting to know Jesus. One of my go to quotes from Billy Graham is when he said something to the effect of, Most Americans know just about Jesus to be immune to the real thing. Sometimes we think we know somebody only to discover there s much more to someone than we thought. Are we immune to the real thing? Who is this Jesus? Often times, as we enter into the Bible stories and the Gospels, we realize there s a lot more to Jesus than we thought. Or maybe we never really paid that much attention or simply took Jesus in our lives for granted. For many it is getting to know Jesus for the first time. I m sure when Jesus first called the disciples to follow him, they had no idea what they were getting into. Confusion often reigned. Among them, their misunderstanding of Jesus was the norm with the occasional flashes of recognition. They were wrong more often than they were right. At the end, they all bailed out on Jesus, leaving him to die. Fortunately, that s not the end of the story for them or us. Jesus call to them continued. I believe one avenue that brings hope and promise, is when I see and listen to folks, young and old, trying to discern their call to follow Jesus. I see them wrestling with the validity of that call. They even wonder if it s true or are they just imagining it. If you re at that stage, good luck trying to say, No. Even I need to continue to discern Jesus call to me. It s never really over. Yet, when we hear that call or sense that tug of Jesus, then Jesus begins to become real. A relationship forms, and although discipleship will never be easy and Jesus will always be more than a bit challenging for us, hearing that call is the miracle of faith. As we go forward as a community of faith, our faith future depends upon all of us continuing to discern that call of Jesus. So that call comes when we gather, as we hear God s Word and when we pray, Here I am Lord.. Now what? Welcome to Lent. Keeping Christ Central, Pastor Rolf G. Morck Therefore, getting to know Jesus is neither easy nor automatic. But with the disciples we re in good company as we open our ears and eyes to Jesus presence in our lives. I believe the real miracle in getting to know Jesus is not from our side of things. Rather it is the constant stirring of the Holy Spirit helping us realize the real action is Jesus getting to know us. It comes in our hearing again those stories of Jesus. It comes in our spending time considering the famous Lutheran question, What does this mean? Accordingly, Lent is that time we take to let this happen. We gather on Wednesdays for worship, food and fellowship. With the confirmation assisting with leading worship, it brings a little excitement and energy. In the midst of it all, may we hear Jesus call to discipleship and what it means to follow Jesus in our own day and age. I not only think this is important, but it is also critical to growing the Christian faith in this time and place. Everyone is struggling with what it means to be God s church in the world. It s harder to be church. It s easier for folks to disengage from their community of faith. Churches no longer provide meaning to emerging generations. Easter Garden Become part of the creation of a beautiful multi-colored Easter Garden. This year we are inviting people to donate a variety of flowers in place of just lilies to beautify our chancel on Easter Sunday, April 1st. Please call the church at by March 26 if you would like to donate an Easter plant or lily. *You are invited to take your flowering plant home after the services Easter Morning.

Central Lutheran Church Women Central Lutheran Church women - All women of Central are invited to participate - meetings are held monthly - see bulletin, CLCW Directory and newsletter for upcoming programs and features. We also thank those who have given fabrics and other supplies that we can use as we make our quilts. Right now we have a good supply of fabric, old sheets and bed spreads, thread and crochet cotton to tie the quilts with. We even splurged and bought a new package of needles! Even the bank balanced looks pretty good. What we need most is more people to help make quilts. We usually quilt together twice a month. If you d like to do some sewing at home let us know and we ll supply you. We give the quilts to Lutheran World Relief and they have definite rules about size of the quilts, fabrics that can be used so we can give you that information too. Thank you for the support!
