1 Jesus Christ is the bridge between God and us. Worship Schedule Keeping Christ Central in February Wednesday, February 3, 2016 Worship with Holy Communion at 6:00 p.m. (The Mondovi Sharing Table Meal is today from 4:30-6:00 p.m. This is a free meal for the whole community sponsored by individuals, families, churches, community organizations and businesses.) Confirmation will meet at 7:00 p.m. We preview tonight the Transfiguration according to Mark 8:27-9:8. Strange are the ways of this God of Israel and Jesus the Messiah. Jesus shining glory on a mountaintop reflects the whole Old Testament history of Israel and its God, but now in suffering and upon a cross shall God s glory be revealed for all. Sunday, February 7, 2016 Worship with Holy Communion and Adult Bells at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. As above, we celebrate Transfiguration Sunday, but with a twist. The light from the mountaintop glory is clearly focused upon a hill with a cross. This is the great wonder and mystery of the Christian faith. Come to the mountain of the Lord. New members will be welcomed today. Souper Bowl Sunday! Wednesday, February 10, 2016 ASH WEDNESDAY LENT BEGINS! Ash Wednesday Worship with Holy Communion at 11:00 a.m. followed by the Lenten Luncheon at noon (free will offerings will go towards the Carillon Fund). Ash Wednesday Worship at 7:00 p.m. preceded by the Lenten Supper from 6:00-7:00 p.m. (PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN SCHEDULE FOR LENT!) The Confirmation youth and their families provide the Lenten Suppers. The free will offering goes to offset the cost of Confirmation Camp at Luther Park Bible Camp in the summer. Our Lenten series is: Bible: Book of Faith. We begin our Lenten time of reflection and repentance with Jesus baptism and temptation in the wilderness. Faith begins with being baptized and born from above. This is a good place to begin in the ashes of repentance and the waters of new life. FEBRUARY 2016 Sunday, February 14, 2016 Worship at 9:00 a.m. with the Women s Choir. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. The First Sunday in Lent. Our focus reading is: Mark 10:17-31, Jesus meets a rich man and invites him to sell all that he has and follow Jesus. What if what we think is so true, is not. In fact, it s all a lie. Maybe Jesus is exposing the lie, which causes this rich man much sorrow. What can then save us from ourselves? Wednesday, February 17, 2016 Lenten Worship at 11:00 followed by the Lenten Luncheon. Lenten Supper at 6:00-7:00 p.m. Lenten Worship with the Confirmation youth at 7:00 p.m. We continue with our Bible: Book of Faith series with the story of the Passion or Jesus death on a cross. Biblical illiteracy is an issue for our day and age. We need to learn to speak the language of the Bible as a book of faith. We learn to speak the language of death and resurrection for all of life. Sunday, February 21, 2016 Worship with Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m. Sunday School is at 10:00 a.m. Our focus reading for this Second Sunday in Lent is: Mark 10: Christianity is a faith revealed in being servants to others and not in any kind of worldly gain or glory. Is this what we see? Come and see. Wednesday, February 24, Lenten Worship at 11:00 followed by the Lenten Luncheon. Lenten Supper at 6:00-7:00 p.m. Lenten Worship with the Confirmation youth at 7:00 p.m. Our Bible: Book of Faith series hits another towering peak of the Christian witness in the resurrection of Jesus. Resurrection too is a different kind of language to be learned as we contemplate our mortality and life after death. Sunday, February 28, Worship at 9:00 a.m. with the Children s Choir and 3rd-5th Grade Sing. Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. The Third Sunday in Lent. Our focus reading is: Mark 12:1-12. Parables contain hard truths. As much as Jesus comes to heal and bring new life, it is not without opposition, as old ways will not step aside without a fight, not even for Jesus.

3 From the Pastor An Open Letter to the Congregation There are so many good things to say about this congregation and your generosity, that in what follows please do not lose sight of all that is good and right. This year in our mission budget, we fell short by $16,000. An analysis of this will have to happen at another time as to what was spent for what and when. All the numbers are in our Annual Report. We cover this shortfall from a generous bequest gift given a number of years ago by a saint named Richard Urness who loved this church. Per Richard s wishes that bequest became part of our savings account or rainy day fund. It has been used to cover shortfalls and to accomplish things like support seminary students and has been used to meet our expenses and supplement our income for such for the last 10 years. Currently the balance of this savings account is just a bit over $10,000. Meaning if we have another year like this past year, we will have to borrow from a bank, line of credit or some other method. Point is we cannot and should not borrow just to run our daily expenses, 90% of which consists of covering personnel and building costs. Additionally, we have no mortgage debt. Our hope is that many love this congregation and appreciate its ministry and would be more than willing to give towards it, but who are unaware that our ministry depends on the generous and regular financial support of the entire congregation, or somehow think all this just magically happens. Therefore, we are at somewhat of a crossroads. We are not a declining congregation, in fact, compared to many we are doing quite well. We can have a good future. Thus, one direction of the crossroads is how can we do better? What is there that would make us stronger and more effective? We have many things going for us. Generous and faithful support can make this happen. The other direction is not so good, eventually over time, resulting in staff reductions and moving towards part-time ministry. Our costs for keeping and maintaining our facilities are pretty fixed. Unlike some congregations in Eau Claire, selling our building to reduce overhead is not an option. As such, as pastor and as congregational leadership, at some point we will need to know from those who claim Central Lutheran as their church home, what is it going to be? I hope we can meet our expenses. The year ahead will tell the tale. This will have to be a total team effort. Everyone matters. If we join together and give what we feel lead to give, we will be fine. Giving to God is the reason we give. Then we hope and pray that God uses our combined talents and resources to be in mission to God s world. At our annual meeting, those who represented the congregation were concerned but resolute that we can move forward. Yet, such matters regarding our future are quite serious. In Christ, Pastor Rolf G. Morck Postscript: We are soon going to roll out a new digital giving system, where those who feel they are being lead to give to God through the mission of our congregation, will now be able to give 3 ways: (Please note: Regular giving through church envelopes and checks/cash will not change. This is just another way to give.) 1. Give online through our Central Lutheran Church website. Coming soon will be a new giving tab. ( 2. There will be a Giving Kiosk available before and after worship and at other events for folks to swipe their debit or credit card as a way of giving their offering. 3. A new Central Lutheran Church App for smart phones, which will have updates on what is happening in the congregation and a way for those who do transactions on their smart phones to also include Central in their giving. Many today, don t write checks, nor carry a checkbook with them, nor do they carry cash. If they can t make a transaction within 10 seconds they probably won t. Furthermore, when they feel like giving or are able to give, it may not be during a worship service. This makes giving more convenient and accessible for those who desire to give and support our congregation financially. This is a safe and secure system, working with a business called Pushpay. This is a one-year trial program. Other congregations who have used this system have averaged a 17.6% increase in their giving to their congregations. Let us hope. If it is successful we will continue to build upon it.
