New Parenting Connection Group (Starts Wednesday, January 7th) The Children s Ministry is sponsoring a new connection group to run 12 weeks during the WNL program. How to Have a New Kid by Friday, will be led by Michelle Anderson and Mandy Houston from 6:00 7:00 pm, room 101. Have a New Kid by Friday shows parents how to reverse negative behavior in their children--fast! Written by Christian psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman, this study offers hope and real, practical, doable strategies for regaining control and becoming the parents you always wanted to be. Focusing on changing a child's attitude, behavior, and character, this book contains chapters for each day of the week.

3 Page 3 We are now accepting flower orders to be placed in the Sanctuary for Sundays in Cost is $50, so reserve your date(s) now by calling the church office at Service Opportunity Communion stewards are needed before and after the 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 services on the first Sunday of each month. Responsibilities include preparing the bread and juice trays prior to service and cleaning up and storing trays after the service. Training will be provided. Ideally, volunteers would serve 4-6 times per year. If you are interested in serving at any of the services, please contact the church office or Tina Pinkerton on the City or at Holiday of Hope The HOLIDAY OF HOPE Ministry will provide a place at FUMC for individuals throughout St Petersburg to drop off donations, both food and gifts, that will be distributed to our brothers and sisters in Christ in Pinellas County who need a helping hand this Holiday Season. The donation site at FUMC will be open M- F 3:30pm 6:30pm and S-S 8:30am 12:30pm on December 14 th and December18 th -23 rd in the Delcamp Building. Today after the service you will receive a bag with a list attached of our mostneeded items. LOVE BBQ? Great! Urban Brew and BBQ will be hosting a fundraising for HOH from December 15 th -21 st. We need 7 sets of middle schoolers, each with one of their parents from 5:30-8:30 and 7 sets of high schoolers, each with one of their parents from 8:30-11:30. 7 Page 7 Merry Christmas and Thank you to those who support UMW! If you were to see the list of "card-carrying" members of United Methodist Women, you would wonder how we accomplish so much with so few members. The answer is clear: Women and men step up to the call to minister in a variety of ways in support of a multitude of ministries. Women who like to sew help make positioning pillows and infant-sized blankets for premature babies at All-Childrens' Hospital. Volunteers march in support of migrant farm-workers, resulting in a number of fast-food restaurants paying a penny a pound more for their tomatoes. Men, women and children show up at the annual rummage sale and help sort, rearrange, haul and clean-up with great results in fellowship and mission funds. Pack-A-Snack has a virtual army of volunteers who break down the food item packaging, pack sacks, and deliver BIG boxes of snacks to the four schools for our 550 school children participants. These are just the BIG challenges taken on by UMW. There are a multitude of other tasks (like 200 ditty bags for children and the homeless at Christmas). To all of you "auxilliary" members who make this possible, may you be richly blessed. Have a happy holiday, and may your blessings continue in You make things happen!!!

8 Page 8 There is a Way To Connect, to Celebrate, to Change! Join us every Thursday night for a special dinner for you. We serve from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Great meal for adult s at $6 and $3 for kids 11 and under! Right after dinner at 6:55 pm, come sit, relax and make this a time for you in our Celebration Service at 6:55 pm. Focus groups meet following the service. These groups include: Codependency for women, Life Hurts, God Heals for men and one for women, Chemical Dependency for men and one for women, Celebration Station for kids 5 years and up with a nursery and more. We would love to have you. Try it! CHRISTMAS CR Join Dr. Gil on Christmas night, December 25 at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall for a small group setting with coffee and dessert! Childcare available. New Year s CR Start the year out on a high note! Join us for a New Year s Celebration Service and dessert, New Year s night in the Fellowship Hall, January 1 st at 7pm. Childcare provided but no dinner or focus groups! CR Leadership Retreat Calling all CR Team members, Focus Group Facilitators and head volunteers. We would like to invite you to our annual CR Leadership Retreat, where we will create relationships, be inspired and come away with a better knowledge of who we are. Healthy Boundaries Elective Join us in this elective facilitated by Joan Kerwin, M.S., LMFT, as weread through Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend s book, Boundaries, When to Say Yes and How to Say No. There are great insights and practical wisdom into the God-given gift of boundaries. 10 Page 10 KITCHEN MINSTRIES SPOTLIGHT Crista Collins-Essman became a member of our church in 1991 and has served as the Kitchen Team Coordinator for Celebrate Recovery since its inception. She decided to volunteer because I love what happens when great food, fellowship and an atmosphere of love and warmth intersect. It s magic. I think that s because a thoughtfully prepared meal that s just full of flavor and presented in a caring way is a pure expression of love. It s honest. There s no pretense and nothing expected in return. It simply says I did this for you because you matter to me. So when Gil asked me to do the CR hospitality start-up, I didn t hesitate. God knows we re all recovering from something aren t we? We all need to know in our bones that we really matter. I just wanted to be part of making that happen for the people coming to CR who are courageous enough to seek their recovery openly. She further explains what she derives from being a volunteer. Oh my goodness - so many things! It s been a crash course in catering for large groups, and it s reinforced my love for creating special events and moments. There s also a deep sense of satisfaction I feel when the meal is on the table, and I get to stand back for a minute. The room is lit just right. The meal smells good and music is quietly playing in the background. People are visiting and milling around and beginning to eat, and I can see that they are truly enjoying the moment. I love that. That s why I do it.
