1 Volume XI, Issue IX September, 2015 Highlands Highlights Memorial A memorial service was held at Highlands on August 15th for Emilia Coker's father, Tata George Legume. Tata was a man of principles, firm, fair, consistent, selfless, who always saw the good in others. He was also very generous, with a great sense of humor. He will be missed but never forgotten by his friends and family of 7 children, and 21 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Soup Nite Inside this issue: The service was well attended by Emilia's family, and they sang the songs with passion. The children and grandchildren read scripture, poems, and grandson, Thomas, played Sonata OP.100-1st Movement by Anton Dvorak in memory of his grandfather on his violin. Pastor Mark gave a message from 2 Timothy, and encouraged all that were there to be reminded of the faith that was evident in Tata's life. The family gathered in the fellowship hall after the service for a dinner in memory of Tata. 2 From the Pastor Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 NIV) This year we ve focused a lot on faith because it s the essence of what it means to be the children of God. The Bible teaches us a lot about faith but I wonder if we ve ever looked at the various ways in which the word itself is used throughout the Scriptures. Sometimes the word for faith as it s used in the Bible refers to a system of doctrine that summarizes our beliefs. We see this in the Book of Jude and verse 3 where the author states: Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. In this sense we can see that faith describes all that we believe and live. We might call this systematic theology, or the Westminster Confession of Faith, or any other such summary of Christian doctrine. There are other places where faith is more personal and yet still offer us some insight into various other meanings. In the Book of Ephesians, chapter 2 and beginning in verse 8 we re told: For it is by grace you have been saved through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. In this instance faith is the vehicle through which grace is experienced and salvation is bestowed. And did you notice how the very faith upon which we act is also a gift from God? That s why we say that all we are and have is by grace. Although there may be other aspects of faith as written in the pages of Scripture there is one truth we must always grasp and that is how faith points to something outside of ourselves. In other words, faith always has an object to which it points. In the Gospel of John, chapter 20 and on verses 30-31, the Beloved Disciple writes these words: Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. You see, it s really all about genuine faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. That s what the writer to the Hebrews is telling us when he reminds us that faith is being sure and certain of those things we cannot see but still believe because God has written it all down in His Word. What God desires most from us is that we trust Him in every aspect of life, believing that He is faithful to keep His word, and living our lives accordingly as He has told us in the pages of Scripture. 3 How well do you know the Bible? It has been said that you can choose your friends but not your relatives. Good, bad or ugly describes many of the following, What do you know about these? 1. Who was Noah s greatgrandfather? 2. How are Easter and Mordecai related? 3. Who were the sons of Zebedee? 4. What king was Mephibosheth s grandfather? 5. How was Joab, the commander of David s army, related to David? 6. Who was married to Elimelech and had sons named Mahlon and Chilion? 7. Who was king David s greatgrandmother? 8. How many siblings did Abram have, and what were their names? 9. Who offered to sacrifice his daughter to God? 10. Whose son was Maher-shalalhash-baz? The answers to these questions will be found on the back page of this newsletter. Guess who this couple is This summer we have all enjoyed learning more about our members at the meet and greet after worship. We thought it would be fun to continue learning a little something about each member in the newsletter each month with a fun little game. Can you guess who s favorite hobby s are music, soccer, track and field, and his wife enjoys cosmetology and music? Submitted by, Paul McInnish Answers will be found on the back page Preschool has started! The school year is off to a great start. The new students and their families gathered in the fellowship hall for open house, and were introduced to Pastor Mark, and Bob Statham, chairman of the board. They then went to their classrooms, and met their teachers and fellow classmates. The students are excited to be back at school, and are anticipating the fun they will have at preschool this year! Please continue to pray for this ministry outreach of Highlands. V OLU ME XI, ISSU E IX Page 3

5 Unity in Worship & Deeper Relationships Through Combined Worship The Worship & Music Ministry Team thanks you for your support of the summer combined worship times. Highlands has grown closer to one another this summer. The Meet and Greet has helped to deepen the bonds we share with one another in Christ. The Combined Worship has brought the members together to fill the sanctuary with songs of praise and worship and hearts that seek to worship and glorify our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This has brought about a spirit of unity that has encouraged each one to honor and glorify God. The combined worship service has been so well received, that both the Session and the Worship & Music Ministry Team would like to continue coming together as the family of God to worship at 10 am each Sunday morning. Beginning Sunday September 13 th, Sunday School will resume at 9:00 am to be followed by the 10:00 Worship Service and there will also be a short coffee and fellowship time after the 10 am service. The Dye/O Farrel class will begin a new series on the book of Daniel. The Highlanders class will continue their study on the book of Acts. Highlands Men s Association Although we are still dealing with the hot temperatures of summer, plans are already in the works for the Fall Festival BBQ. The BBQ sale will be held on Saturday, October 31, so we are planning some events that will coincide with Halloween. As usual, we will be placing a sign-up sheet at the church for the various jobs and times during the day. We need your help! Please sign up and help with this important fundraiser for Breakfast 9am Meeting September 19 the church. The money raised is used for projects around the church, assisting with the Youth Program, and other needs that may arise. The next Thank you, Stan Whitaker meeting will be held on September 19 to make final plans. Please make plans to attend. WOC Please invite your lady friends, neighbors and family members to join us for the Ladies Tea on Sept 12th. Register on line as soon as possible. 7 YOUTH NEWS This summer has been a great one for the Highlands Youth! We participated in lots of activities and had a great summer of fun, fellowship, and service. In July we had our first daytime lock-in which went great - we played frisbee golf, video games, grilled out, and went swimming! It was a ton of fun! We also went on our mission trip to Abbeville, SC to do Widow's Ministry. We did a ton of work and got to visit and pray with many widows. They really appreciated the youth coming and listening to their stories, helping out around the house, and visiting with them! Thank you to everyone who prayed for us and supported us on this trip! We are so excited to start back the school year and get back into the routine of Wednesday nights! We have a lot of Seniors this year so please be in prayer for them throughout the year as they strive to finish their last year of high school well! Thank you, Chris McCoy 125th Anniversary Celebration How has God used Highlands to impact your life? Highlands is celebrating 125 years of glorifying God! We would like to compile a book about how God has impacted your life! We would like every member, past and present to submit a picture and a story of how God has used Highlands in your life. God may have used Highlands to impact your life in many ways, so please submit just one or two specific stories. This book will be an encouragement to all who read it and a testimony to what an amazing God we have, and how He has used Highlands to change so many lives! These hardbound books will be available to anyone who would like to purchase one. The cost will depend on how many stories are submitted. More information will be available as the stories are submitted. Submit a story, and have your name go down in the pages of history! Missions Please be in prayer for the Missions Team as we meet to discuss plans to hold a Missions Conference at Highlands. We are in the process of coordinating speakers for this weekend event so we do not have a schedule for you quite yet. For updates you can check the church's website or Facebook page or just ask one of the Mission Team members: Sal Macaluso, Rob Kuykendall, Leah Avitable, Bonnie Hornby, Frank Sexton V OLU ME XI, ISSU E IX Page 7
