She continued to be a faithful member of Highlands until she was moved to Madison Health and Rehabilitation some time after her 90th birthday. Verna enjoyed crossword puzzles and word search puzzles. She enjoyed volunteering her time at the Golden Living Nursing Home. Verna Knight went to heaven on February 5, Verna will be fondly remembered by her many friends at Highlands. 2 From the Pastor Highlands Highlights 1 And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:1-3 ESV) We re continuing our overview of the moral law, what we call the Ten Commandments, and we begin where God begins, the first commandment. Theologians have actually divided this first commandment into two distinct yet connected sections. Verses one and two are often called the preamble with verse 3 being the actual commandment. In other words, the preamble is that foundation for all that follows in the moral law of God, the very basis for what He is commanding us to be and to do. He reminds us rather pointedly that He alone is our God and as such has the right to tell us how we are to conduct our lives. In fact, the word translated LORD is in all capitals for a reason. This is the proper name of God, the highest name of God, that He has revealed to us about Himself. But not only are we required to obey God just because He is God, He also reminds us of all He s done on our behalf. He tells His ancient people, Israel, that He alone is the God who brought them out of Egypt and freed them from slavery. As we read through the following chapters and books of the Old Testament we also will notice that this same God not only freed them but then gave them a land flowing with great blessings fulfilling the promise He made to Abraham. Do you realize that the promise God gave and fulfilled to Israel is also for us today? You see, there s a great spiritual truth in this statement from God in that He also has freed every believer from slavery to sin and has given each of us, not only the promise of blessing in this life as we live in love and obedience to Him, but also the great hope of eternal life through the person and work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And because God has freed us from the dominion of sin, we can now approach the moral law with a determination, in accordance with the grace of God at work in us, to express genuine love for Him and others as we strive to live in obedience to God s commandments. Now that we have the foundation for why we should strive to keep the law, we begin with the first and foremost of that law, You shall have no other gods before me. Since God is God as well as being our creator and since we are made in His image as Scripture teaches then it follows that He should be first and foremost in our lives and that our lives should be lived in such a way that He is praised, honored, and glorified. You see, God will not tolerate competition since He alone is God. It s not just that God is to be first in our lives but that He is to be the only God in and of our lives. As it applied to God s ancient people, He was calling them to forsake the gods of the land they were entering and to worship Him alone as their God. Sadly, God was not always worshipped as the true and only God by His ancient people and they endured severe consequences for their disobedience. The same thing is true of us today. We can also fall into this sin as we live our lives in that we can make some of the things or even the people we admire in life as important to us as God. As one commentator stated: The sin against this commandment which we are most in danger of, is giving that glory to any creature which is due to God only. Pride makes a god of ourselves, covetousness makes a god of money, sensuality makes a god of the belly. Whatever is loved, feared, delighted in, or depended on, more than God, that we make a god of. Because this is such an easy trap to fall into we must always be on our guard so that we do not sin against this God who has lavished his love, mercy, and grace upon us. We also need to remember that through the cross of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit within us we can overcome. We also must remember that in those times when we find ourselves in this sin we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous one. Pastor Mark Page 2

Volume XIV, Issue III The Valentines Dinner was enjoyed by folks of all ages. The atmosphere was a fun fiesta. We enjoyed a wonderful Mexican meal prepared by volunteer women of our church. Great entertainment by our own talented members. Sal Macaluso did a fantastic job as our MC. Bob Statham put together some exciting music to dance by. Sharon Edmondson, Jane Statham, and Azaleae Akins, led us in some fun line dances. The children enjoyed making fun crafts, eating pizza and breaking yummy treats from the piñata. Page 7

Highlands Highlights A big thank you to all that helped put the Valentines Dinner together. Bonnie Hornby was the master mind behind the whole thing. She also helped create the fun heart flags that were strung across the room. Michelle McCoy also was a big help. She designed the flyers, web page sign up, and our prizes. Lee Hunt was in charge of organizing the entertainment. Sal was a great MC, Bill Wright wowed us with his trumpet playing, Sharon Edmondson, Karen Akins, and Pastor Mark sang solos. Matt Hunt sang while Joey Hunt played the electric guitar. Lee and Jerita Hunt sang a duet. Cindy Bennett, Betsy Whitson, and Carol Streng, sang in a trio. Bonnie Hornby played the piano while Pastor Mark sang our closing song. Carole Sexton organized decorating with help from Andrea Eklund, Jane Statham, Frank Sexton, and Libby White. Our amazing Chefs were Betsy Whitson, Cindy Bennett, Carol Streng and Faith Wallace. Bre Jones created the wonderful dessert. Gene Streng and Jim Whitson helped plate the food. Chris McCoy organized and helped the youth to serve. Page 8

Volume XIV, Issue III Azeleae, Edward and Francina Akins, Marissa Spiller, Robert and Caralee Whittle and Trinity did an awesome job serving. Leah Avitabile, and Megan Sinclair helped run the activities for the young children. Bonnie Hornby also took our pictures as we entered the fellowship hall. Thank you for all that helped clean up after and for all the hard work everyone did to work together to make this such an enjoyable evening. Page 9

February was such a fun month of service and fellowship. I m so thankful for all of the students who were willing and able to serve at the Valentine s dinner. They did a great job making sure everyone was taken care of! In Sunday School we have been continuing our study of Colossians and focusing on how we are supposed to live as Christians. On Wednesday nights we have had a lot of fun learning about the need for forgiveness. We took an awesome trip out to Stone Summit Rock Climbing Gym and had a ton of fun climbing on the T-rex, bouldering in the boulder room, and topping out on some tall walls! Sunday School at 9am! 11 Volume XIV, Issue III Soup Nite Wow, is February over already? We just finished our 4th Monday Soup Nite. We served Brunswick Stew, corn bread, applesauce and cookies. We also gave out milk, potatoes and eggs on our "give away" table. It was such a pleasure to have so much help this Monday. The kitchen was buzzing with conversation. Two ladies from St. Matthew's Episcopal church came to see "how we do this". They are thinking of starting up serving hot meals to the guests of Seven Springs in Snellville. They also helped us serve tonight. We had a new server tonite, Gertha. She is a friend of Anna Wimer's and asked me yesterday how she could help at church yesterday. I hope she is able to come often. Faith members were there to help and we missed Linda but hopefully will see her again. We ran out of food at 6:15. Bob and Charles had been in the kitchen making Highlands famous Brunswick Stew and made sooooo much, but alas, all gone too soon. We gave out some frozen fajitas and wraps for the extra people that came after the stew was gone. Libby, Liezl and Marissa cleaned the ENTIRE kitchen, not just the pots and pans! Bob and Charles delivered to our shut ins and Lee Ragas delivered meals to the CoOp for the senior delivery tomorrow. Mr. Winfrey prayed us through the night and it was good! Our first serving in February, was Lasagna in a Pot and it was wonderful! We served warm garlic bread and pineapples as well. Our congregation members made the crock pots and what a delight to smell that sauce bubbling in the kitchen. We were in need of help to serve but somehow, the Lord always brings us just what we need. Libby and Liezl and Marissa did clean up and boy did they clean up! Again. Our servings in March are on the 12th and 26th. We are serving Breakfast for Supper on the 12th and Chinese Chicken Dinner on the 26th. I will keep you posted. Thank you for all you do to serve our community and spreading Love because of our love for Christ. Just a note on Mr. Dix...he is good with meals for now. Taking it easy and he will be in touch with me at the end of Next Week. In Christ, Carrie MARCH SOUP NIITES ARE MARCH 12TH AND MARCH 26TH Page 11
