This was during the depression when money was tight. Ernest had arranged for the pancake mix, sausage and syrup when he suddenly died at the age of 42. With Thanksgiving approaching his family thought it would be appropriate to have the breakfast on Thanksgiving morning as a memorial for Ernest. The tradition has continued now for more than 80 years. The Bell family join us every year at 7:30AM to be a part of the Thanksgiving service and sing in the choir. The men of the church help the youth by cooking and the youth eagerly serve up the piping hot pancakes and sausage. Please plan to join us at 7:30AM Thanksgiving Morning. 2 PAGE 2 HIGHLANDS HIGHLIGHTS From the Pastor You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Exodus 20:16 ESV) We re at the ninth commandment which deals with the way in which we speak to and about each other. The tongue is a powerful instrument that can either be used to bless or to curse. James, the half-brother of Jesus makes this very clear when he writes in chapter 3 of his letter, beginning in verse 5: So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. (James 4:5-10 ESV) The ninth commandment calls us to watch what we say as well as how we say what we say. It tells us that we must never speak anything that would be considered false regarding ourselves or any other person. We should never lie about ourselves, who we are or what we might have done or not done, nor should we lie about other people. We all know the damage gossip can do, not only to those who are the victims of gossip but also, to those who may hear of such things as gossip can also create division and discord in families, friendships, and especially in the church. Neither should we be found guilty of libel where we defame, slander, or insult others with our words. The Scriptures are very clear about how God perceives those who speak falsely. In Proverbs 17:5 we re told: Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished. In Proverbs chapter 6, beginning in verse 16 we read these words: There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers. I think we all understand God s position on the improper use of the tongue. The whole point is that we must be very careful about what we say and how we say what we say. Our goal is always to build up and not destroy. Sure, there are times when we must confront those in sin and help them see the folly of their sinfulness. However, even in those times we do so very carefully as we convey our genuine love for them. I believe the Scripture that has helped me those most along these lines is found the Apostle Pau s letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4 and verse 29 where he writes: Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. I personally believe that if we keep that Scripture in the forefront of our minds, letting it guide our thoughts and words, we will find ourselves only saying those things about ourselves and others that will honor God and benefit those who listen. 4 H IGHLANDS H IGHLIGHTS P AGE 4 Highlands MMO & Preschool November Be Thankful The students have been doing a great job learning this year, and they seem to be having fun at the same time! They have also done a great job with their manners, and saying, "Please, Thank You, and Excuse Me!" This month they will be encouraged to be thankful for God, for their families, for their toys, and really for everything! This month we will also be talking about the first Thanksgiving! We will be learning about Pilgrims and Native Americans! You are invited to join us for a Thanksgiving Parade on November 15 at 9:45 am! Highlands MMO & Preschool is reaching out to our community to provide quality Christian childcare and instruction to families with young children. Please pray for this outreach ministry of Highlands ARP Church.
5 VOLUME XIV, ISSUE XI PAGE 5 ADULT SUNSDAY SCHOOL The reason God gave us the Bible is to reveal Himself to us. There is no other way to get to know Him beyond His being the Creator of everything. To that end, the adult class is embarking on a study through the Old Testament, not to study people, places, and events, but to discover what God was doing in and through these people, places, and events. We invite you to join us this week to get to know God on a deeper and more personal level as we watch Him reveal Himself to us. We are presently in the book of Genesis. If you would, please begin reading from chapter 12, dealing with God s call on Abram (Abraham). Don t stay away because you think you might not be there every week. There is always much to be learned. Sunday School does not start too early! We meet each Sun- day at 9 in the Fellowship Hall. What time do you start work? Which is more important learning about God or your job? (Each has a place, but in the scheme of eternity, which is more important?) Come join us as we learn from each other and with each other. Dennis Bennett

Some like it hot and some do not. Folks got to vote on their favorite home made chili. Then the carving contest began. Parents helped their young children to decorate the pumpkins and the youth began to carve into and create their favorite Jack O Lateran. The men of the church were busy smoking the hams for the BBQ sale. Thank you to everyone that helped to make this such a fun time.

14 PAGE 14 HIGHLANDS HIGHLIGHTS SOUP NITE NOVEMBER SOUP NITES ARE NOVEMBER 12 AND NOVEMBER 26 We started off the Fall with it being just as hot as in the Summer! We did get some much needed rain on this nite. While we didn't get our normal numbers for our first meal in October, it was still pretty good for being a holiday as well! We served Ham and Cheese Quiche, fruit cup and buttered English Muffins. There were lots of givea-ways on the table such as eggs, peanut butter, ham and cookies. It was pretty awesome. We had a family of 7 stay and eat with us and while the kids weren't too fond of quiche, they still managed to eat some! We missed a few of our regular guests this day. Mr. Winfrey and Xavier and Miss Anne didn't show up. However, we had a few new people and one of them, was Ms. Nakeena Garrett. She left after getting her meals for 4, teary eyed and Jane caught up with her out by her car. Nakeena was just grateful, which of course, made everyone teary eyed. Jane had a brief chance to pray with her. Please continue to pray for her and her family. Such blessings are shared among our brothers and sisters in Christ and this is why we do Soup Nite. Our last meal of October was on the 22nd and we served Chicken Vegetable Soup with crackers, pears and donut holes! It was perfect for the weather outside and such a difference from last Soup Nite. We used fresh green beans from the garden in this soup. It was so exciting to use produce from the garden for the soup! Now that it is cooler out, we can serve our famous soups! We ran out of the Vegetable soup about 6pm and started serving Manhattan Clam Chowder, but people can be allergic. If they were, we gave them a box of Corn Dogs with chips. We went into the depths of the pantry for more food to serve. There were quite a lot of last minute people in the last hour. It was another night of the fishes and the loaves story and we were able to serve everyone something. Mr. Winfrey couldn't make it that night, but Xavier came and led prayer for us. A mighty prayer it was too!! Xavier is going to ask a lady friend to marry him, so be in prayer for that. He just went on and on about how we have become family to his family. Also, Betsy asked for prayer for a friend. A wonderful, elderly man who has just gone thru surgery and has Leukemia. Remember him in your prayers that he may recover quickly. We had the same family as 2 weeks ago stay and eat in with us. It's been fun getting to know new people, especially the kids. In November, we will be serving on the 12th, Turkey Pumpkin Chili and on the 26th, Pizza Nite. Jane will be gone on the 12th, so I can use large amounts of help! LOL. The Chili will be a crock pot meal and the pizza we will order as we did last year. At that time, we will start preparing for our Fellowship Dinner Soup Nite on December 5th. Phew, the months just fly by. Thank you for all your help and dedication in continuing this ministry. Our guests are very special to us and we are to them as well. It is such a privilege to serve and fellowship with you.
