2 Pastor Scott s Issue: Let the Waters Flow! We took our first trip of hopefully many more to the Porcupine Mountains a few weeks ago. Personally, Lake Superior is a place of peace for me. The immensity, the power, and the beauty are important reminders to me of who our God is. Utilizing the technology of the internet and live webcams, when I am a little down (yes, this eternal optimist does have some days when I am not always upbeat) I just need to link to a Lake Superior webcam and let the live images of the beauty of God s creation in this mighty waters refresh my soul. On this particular trip we stopped on the west side of the state park to hike the Presque Isle River waterfall trail. Here is an image from the falls nearest Lake Superior. As I reflected on this image I was reminded of another scripture: John 7:37-39 Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. We live in the light of this new covenant. God has now come to us through His Holy Spirit. He comes to us when we are refreshed or parched. His Spirit is poured out upon those who believe. And so The Spirit is there: we can watch the waters flow from a distance, we can acknowledge that it is there. The refreshing comes when we drink. The action verb in this text: drink. Drink from God s flowing river of His Spirit. Come to God s flowing river. What still astounds me is that we are not only refreshed by God, but that refreshing then flow from us. God can take us, and use us, and refresh us for His purposes in the world: once refreshed we can then refresh others. Come to Jesus, be refreshed and let the waters flow! Peace, Pastor Scott

COMMUNION The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed August 5, COUNCIL MEETING Church Council meets Tuesday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the Council meeting, the Elders will meet at 6 p.m. Watch the Sunday bulletin for announcements of when other Departments or committees meet. Remember the church is locked on Musky Day following the worship service and coffee hour. It will be open as usual the following Monday. The church mailing list is updated as changes are reported to the office, often several times a month. If your copy is old, you are welcome to ask for an upto-date copy. Drop a note in the office mail slot and a copy will be placed in your mail folder in Fellowship Hall. Enjoy coffee hour following the morning worship service? It is a great chance to share conversation with friends and new acquaintances. As always, hosts and hostesses are needed! Helen Townsend is now recuperating at Avanti. This year we added the vendors to our list of selling BarBQ, Sarah Poisson and Emilie Bierke(my granddaughter) went out and took orders. Then they brought the food back to vendors. Ray Ondracek and Jamie Zogata took care of all the merchants with the help of Nate, Ben and Micah. Our servers inside did an amazing job. Thanks to everyone who made this event so wonderful. 5 Notes from Worship & Music Sound System Evaluation - A committee has been formed to evaluate and make recommendations for updating our current system. Committee members are Bruce Greenhill, Pete Johnson, Lorine Walters, Glen Wildenberg, Jamie Zogata, Glen Wildenberg and Pastor Scott. Please contact a committee member with any recommendations or concerns you may have with our current system. A member of the congregation has offered to make an initial donation to a sound system fund should the committee decided that a fund needs to be established. Hymnals & Bibles - It has become evident that there is a need for 20 additional hymnals and bibles in the sanctuary as well as a new keyboard edition hymnal for the organist. A motion was made and approved by the Church Council and the order has been placed through the Covenant Bookstore. Worship & Music Department - The monthly meeting of the W&M Committee has been changed to the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 AM In the Church library. Changing the meeting date will make it possible for Pastor Scott to attend our meetings.

6 Strawberry Social Update: Thank you to all of the volunteers, the attendees and white elephant and bakery customers who helped make this year s social a huge success. 7 Christian Education / Youth Wow! July was a very busy month for Christian Education. In addition to many C.E. members helping out at the Strawberry Social, we also did some fundraising of our own. This year we organized our first ever Christmas in July car wash and brat fry kickoff to our Operation Christmas Child fundraiser through Samaritans Purse. Despite the gloomy weather and cool temperatures, the wonderful people of Community Church and this great town kept our kids hoses spraying, sponges scrubbing, and towels drying all day long! What a sight! While waiting for their clean car, our customers had the chance to visit with each other and enjoy some great food! Some of the businesses in town even sent employees to pick up lunch for everyone at their store. This town has the greatest people! Speaking of great people, our wonderful friends at Coontail Market generously helped us with our food purchases and donations. To all who supported this fundraiser by donating, eating, or letting our kids wash your cars, we can t thank you enough! Because of you, we will be able to send even more gift boxes to some of the neediest children in the world. God Bless each of you!

8 One thing is for sure, the C.E. people like to have fun! Recently, our Boys to Christian Men mentoring group enjoyed a horseback riding trip at Grassy Creek Ranch, and swimming at the home of Jim and Ruth Stober. While at the ranch, the kids loved the opportunity to take well trained horses on an adventurous ride through field and forest. By the end of the ride, everyone came back to the stable with their horse running wide open! They were so excited!!! Meantime, horse experts Dick and Moe Nelson gave the kids who weren t currently on a ride a few great lessons about raising horses, saddles, and the beauty of raising horses and animals in general. Then ranch owner Sonny showed the kids how to rope animals. The boys thought that was great, but didn t think it was that hard since the animal was just standing there. So, I suggested the boys try running past him to see if he could rope them. Let s just say we all nearly died laughing, and not a single boy escaped! After the ranch Jim and Ruth hosted an excellent cookout, complete with homemade ice cream!!! All the kids went swimming, tadpole catching, played water baseball, and just had a TON of FUN! Thank you Jim and Ruth for opening up your hearts and home, we love and appreciate you very much!
