2 Visitor Information Welcome to those of you here for the first time. If you have children, they are invited to join the Church School at 10:30 am with our trained teachers. The classroom is located through the door at the front right of the chapel and down the hall; please ask if you need help finding it. The children will join us in church at the Peace and for Communion. All baptized children of any age are welcome to receive communion. Please join in the singing! Hymnals are located in the pew and the numbers are listed in the leaflet. S numbered hymns are found in the front of the Hymnal The Book of Common Prayer may also be found in the rack in front of you. We are a self-supporting congregation, so when we pass the plate in the middle of the service, please be generous. Today s collection will support our ministries to the community. All are welcome by God to the heavenly banquet. The Episcopal Church offers the sacraments to anyone baptized in any denomination who, through prayer and thoughtful consideration, desires them. Please come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, whether you are an Episcopalian or not, or to receive a blessing. When coming to the rail for communion, please kneel or stand at the rail from right to left until the rail is full. You may receive both the wafer and wine, the wafer only, or may ask for a blessing. Please let the priest know if you need gluten free. Our priest, Debbie, is available after the service to answer any questions you might have. Please let her know your thoughts about today s service. We ask that you sign the guestbook at the entrance of the church. If you want more information, our web address is Our weekly newsletter, called Grace Notes, can be found there. If you wish to receive the newsletter, simply go to the website, open Grace Notes and subscribe. We hope you find the service meaningful and the embrace of our community hospitality inviting. Amen. The Word of the Lord The Lessons The people sit. The First Lesson Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, The servant said to Laban, I am Abraham s servant. The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become wealthy; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, camels and donkeys. And Sarah my master s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and he has given him all that he has. My master made me swear, saying, You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; but you shall go to my father s house, to my kindred, and get a wife for my son. I came today to the spring, and said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you will only make successful the way I am going! I am standing here by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, Please give me a little water from your jar to drink, and who will say to me, Drink, and I will draw for your camels also let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master s son. Before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah coming out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the spring, and drew. I said to

4 her, Please let me drink. She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will also water your camels. So I drank, and she also watered the camels. Then I asked her, Whose daughter are you? She said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor s son, whom Milcah bore to him. So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her arms. Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to obtain the daughter of my master s kinsman for his son. Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn either to the right hand or to the left. And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Will you go with this man? She said, I will. So they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse along with Abraham s servant and his men. And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, May you, our sister, become thousands of myriads; may your offspring gain possession of the gates of their foes. Then Rebekah and her maids rose up, mounted the camels, and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Negeb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up, he saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac, she slipped quickly from the camel, and said to the servant, Who is the man over there, walking in the field to meet us? The servant said, It is my master. So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother s death. When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord will provide ; as it is said to this day, On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 4

5 Psalm 45:11-16 Thomas Pavlechko, Hyfrydol 11 "Hear, O daughter; consider and listen closely; * forget your people and your father's house. 12 The king will have pleasure in your beauty; * he is your master; therefore do him honor. 13 The people of Tyre are here with a gift; * the rich among the people seek your favor." 14 All glorious is the princess as she enters; * her gown is cloth-of- gold. 15 In embroidered apparel she is brought to the king; * after her the bridesmaids follow in pro- cession. 16 With joy and gladness they are brought, * and enter into the palace of the king. The Epistle Romans 7:15-25a I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 6 The Gospel Matthew 11:16-19, Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said to the crowd, To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon ; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds. At that time Jesus said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. The Sermon Gospeller People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Reverend Deborah Phillips The Nicene Creed page 358 The Prayers of the People Creator God, grant us grace to safeguard the integrity of your creation, and respect, sustain, and renew the life of the Earth. God of the Beloved Community, grant us the commitment to continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers. Universal God, grant us the will to proclaim by word and example the Good News of you in Christ, bringing those we encounter to your table of love. 6

7 Gracious God, grant us the vision to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves. God of justice, grant us the courage to strive for freedom and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being. Holy One, we name before you those in need of our prayers of comfort, healing, discernment and peace, especially those on our parish prayer list. Prayers of intention and petition are offered from our hearts. Eternal God, we ask that you remember our love for those who have died, especially those whom we now name, either silently or aloud. Generous God, here we offer and present to you our prayers of thanksgiving; for the beauty of the earth, for this worshiping community of faith, for the Good News of our salvation, for acts of sacrifice and service, for those who advocate on our behalf; and for rest from our labors. 8 The Invitation This is the table, not of the Church, but of the Lord. It is made ready for those who love him and for those who want to love him more. So come, you who have much faith and you who have little, You who have been here often, and you who have not been here long, you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, because it is the Lord who invites you. It is his will that those who want him should meet him here. 10 Weekend Grocery Program Beginning July 5th and running throughout the summer, Salem is offering free meals again to everyone 18 and younger at a number of sites in the City. One of these sites is the Library across the street. We, at Grace Church, are concerned about food sources for those families over the weekend. So on the Fridays during the weeks that lunch will be offered at the library, we will invite families to come to Grace Church for bags of groceries. In these grocery bags will be a recipe card for a healthy meal, such as a casserole, that will provide two meals for a family of four. All the ingredients for these recipes will be included in the bags. There will be other fresh produce included as well. Paige Nalipinski is the team leader for this project. Why not give her a call (or ) and see how you can help in some way? We need people to help bag the groceries each Friday and others to be present to hand them out from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. If you have menu ideas, send them along too. Jesus calls us to "feed my sheep." Here is a very little thing we can do that will make a big impact. Summer Music Camp August Grace Church is excited to announce this weeklong music camp for students entering 4th through 8th grade. The camp will run each day from 9-12 with lunch available across the street at the Salem Public Library. During the camp, under the direction of Mr. Hector Ortiz, music director at the Nathaniel Bowditch School, and The Rev. Debbie Phillips, singers will learn music, play games, do crafts, and just have a lot of fun while developing skills. There will be a final performance on Friday evening to showcase their talents. This camp is FREE and is sponsored by the Episcopal North Shore Mission Hub at Grace Episcopal Church. Please register by August 10th by ing gcis1@verizon.net. 10
