Amen. The Lessons The people sit. The First Lesson Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (This line will now be read in a variety of languages). Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and

4 Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' 5 The Second Lesson Romans 8:14-17 All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. People Praise to the Holy Spirit who leads us in love. Presider We gather to give thanks for Bob Reynolds 13 years of life and to seek God s blessing for all the years to come. O God, we rejoice this day as we mark Bob s transition to adulthood and his taking on of new responsibilities for himself and on behalf of others. May he discover your will for him and commit to serving others in your Name. Give him and his family grace, courage and unfailing hope, as they travel together through life, sisters and brothers united in Christ. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen. The Renewal of Baptismal Vows The Book of Common Prayer, page 292 The Prayers of the People Good People of God, I bid your prayers for Christ s holy Catholic Church. May it be a beacon of peace, unity and understanding in an often conflicted, divided and confusing world. We are the Body of Christ on earth, may we witness to your love. I bid your prayers for all peoples throughout the world. May we find a way to bring an end to the conflicts that surround us, especially in the Middle East, that all may be safe wherever they may be. We are the Body of Christ in the world, may we make peace. I bid your prayers for all in need of wholeness, especially those on our parish prayer list, and those whom we name, either silently or aloud. The People add their intentions and intercessions. We are the Body of Christ to a broken world, may we bring Christ s healing love. I bid your prayers for all those saints who have gone before. May we strive for the fullness of your presence when our earthly time is done.

7 We are the Body of Christ in this time, as we await our time in God s kingdom. I bid your prayers of thanksgiving for this parish of faith. May we be guided in our life at Grace Church, learn how to bring others to Christ, seek forgiveness, and strive for unity and concord. The people add their thanksgivings and hopes. We are the Body of Christ to one another, may we seek and serve Christ in our neighbors. 9 A Special Greeting to Visitors Welcome to those of you here for the first time. The Episcopal Church offers all the sacraments of the Catholic Tradition to anyone who is a baptized Christian and who desires such sacrament. Please feel free to come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, or to receive a blessing. All are welcome to the rail, as all are welcome to reverently receive the heavenly food of God. The priest will be available after the service to answer any questions you might have. If you wish to receive weekly envelopes for the offering, please speak with the Rector following the service and they will be available the next Sunday. 10 Did you know? While adults need to eat breakfast each day to perform their best, kids need it even more. Not all children, however, come from homes with the economic means for a healthy breakfast. In Salem alone, one out of three children live in families where food does not always appear on the table. Grace Church now joins with the ongoing mission of Joseph's Storehouse, 207 Highland Ave in Salem, to help feed our neighbors. This month, we are collecting unsweetened cereals. Collection baskets are at each entry to the church. Monetary donations are also accepted. For any questions, please speak with Pat Small ( , or psmall.alaris@gmail.com). If you would like to help with packing and delivering the donations on Saturday, 25 May, please sign up on the sheet in the Lobby. For upcoming months, we are developing a speakers series for these mornings and are in the process of discussing with the Council on Aging ideas for home improvement projects for our seniors in Salem. The children will again participate in the Abundant Life Garden Project, growing vegetables for pantries in Salem while learning about the needs around the world. 11 End of Year Choir School Event Everyone is invited to come and hear the Trebles of the Choir School sing their final Evensong of the season and receive their Royal School of Church Music certificates of completion and ribbons. The Choir School is one of our most significant ministries to children in the Salem area which is supported through tuition and our pledge payments. Come and celebrate this year s successes as we hear these wonderful musicians sing! The service begins at 4:00 pm on June 2nd. 11
