2 Visitor Information Welcome to those of you here for the first time. If you have children, they are invited to join the garden project on the front patio with our trained teachers. They will join us in church at the Peace and for Communion. All baptized children of any age are welcome to receive communion. All are welcome by God to the heavenly banquet. The Episcopal Church offers the sacraments to anyone baptized in any denomination who, through prayer and thoughtful consideration, desires them. Please come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, whether you are an Episcopalian or not, or to receive a blessing. Please join in the singing! Hymnals are located in the pew and the numbers are listed in the leaflet. S numbered hymns are found in the front of the hymn book. The Book of Common Prayer may also be found in the rack in front of you. We are a self-supporting congregation, so when we pass the plate in the middle of the service, please be generous. Today s collection will support our ministries to the community. When coming to the rail for communion, please kneel or stand to the left of the person in line directly in front of you until the rail is full. You may receive both the wafer and wine, or may ask for a blessing. Please let the priest know if you need gluten free. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." 9 Encountering the Bible: Healing Beginning Wednesday, September 21, there will be a four part study of healing stories from the Bible. Not only will we look at passages related to physical healing, but we will also consider the healing of relationships, the healing of divisions within the Church, and the healing of the earth. Each session will begin at 6:00 pm with Evening Prayer, followed by Bible Study at 6:30 pm. The studies will take place on the following Wednesdays: September 21 and 28, October 12 and 19 for approximately one hour. Please let Debbie know if you would like to lead the Evening Prayer one week. Adult Study: Yes, I go to the Episcopal Church (though I m not quite sure what that means) We each have our own story to tell of how we landed here, and we each have our own way of exploring what this means. You are invited to come on Sundays at 6:00 pm for a light hearted yet informative look at the Episcopal Church. The study will meet the following Sundays: October 2, 16 and November 6, 13 and 20 for approximately one hour. Community Potluck September 11 at 11:45 am Start looking through your recipes for your choice of dish for the potluck on September 11. Everyone is welcome to come and share stories about the summer, hear a bit about upcoming programs and elect our two delegates to November s Diocesan Convention. Choir Start-Up Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, September 7 at 7:30 pm. Debbie says she has heard a number of voices in the congregation this summer who would be great additions to the choir this year. Please consider joining us for our first rehearsal on a trial basis and see if it is a fit for you. There will be wine and cheese at the end of the first rehearsal, if that might entice you further! The choir will sing on Sundays at 10:30 am beginning September 11th. 9

10 Blessing of Backpacks next week All students are invited to bring their backpacks to church next week for a special blessing as they either start kindergarten or return to school. Following the service we ll have a special reception for them all. Bowditch News There are going to be a few new ways of being involved with the 6th grade scholars this year. But before that, there are a few things coming up: Wednesday 31 August: Those interested in the partnership this year will gather at 6:30 pm to share our own experiences and ideas for the school. Wednesday 7 September: We will be on hand to greet the scholars on their arrival for the first day on school. Other ideas that are brewing: A 1-to-1 campaign at Grace Church to see what our common interests are with public school education in Salem and across the country. A yearlong penpal project where each student has a member of Grace Church who shares a notebook full of letters to one another. These notebooks would be exchanged once a month by a volunteer from Grace. Attending School Committee meetings as advocates for the Bowditch School. In-class assistance during the school day. Little Free Library project. There s much going on! Come and let us know what you think. We really want to hear from you on Wednesday 31 August at 6:30 pm. 10
