Amen. The Lessons The people sit. The First Lesson 1 Kings 8:22-30, Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. He said, O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. Therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, `There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children look to their way, to walk before me as you have

4 walked before me.' Therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant my father David. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! 5 The Gospel John 6:56-69 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever." He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?" But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, "Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father." Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. 6 The Presentation and Examination of the Candidate The says The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Who do you present for the Sacrament of New Birth? The Parents and Godparents answer I present Makayla Roze Manning to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The asks Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? The Parents and Godparents answer I will, with God s help. The asks Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? The Parents and Godparents answer I will, with God s help. The asks the following questions of the parents and godparents Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? Answer I renounce them. Question Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? Answer I renounce them. Question Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? Answer I renounce them. Question Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? Answer I do. Question Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? Answer I do. Question Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? Answer I do. The then asks the congregation Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support Makayla in her life in Christ? We will. 6

7 The then says Let us join with Makayla who is committing herself to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will with God s help. 7

Open her heart to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill her with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Keep her in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach her to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send her into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring her into the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. Thanksgiving over the Water The blesses the water, first saying The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 8

The Baptism of Makayla Roze Manning Makayla is presented by name to the who pours water upon her, saying Makayla, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. When this has been completed, the prays Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Then the places a hand on the head of the newly baptized, marking the sign of the cross and saying You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. The says Let us welcome the newly baptized. and We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. The Episcopal Church offers all the sacraments of the Catholic Tradition to anyone who is a baptized Christian and who desires such sacrament. All are welcome to the rail, as all are welcome to reverently receive the heavenly food of God. When coming to the rail for communion, please kneel or stand to the left of the person in line directly in front of you until the rail is full. Grace Church is self-supporting through your plate offering and pledges members make each year. Please be generous at the time of the offering, as your gift allows us to offer sacraments such as this baptisms. If you wish to receive weekly envelopes for the offering, please speak to the Rector following the service and they will be available the next Sunday. Please fill out a Visitor Card located in the pew. We d love to send you our weekly electronic newsletter and our magazine, Gracenotes, so please add your address. You may also use this for your donation to the church to place in the plate during the offertory anthem. The priest will be available after the service to answer any questions you might have. 10

11 Baptism in the Episcopal Church: "Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body, the Church. The bond which God establishes in Baptism is indissoluble." (The Book of Common Prayer 298.) Full initiation means that nothing else will be required for a person to have full membership in the Church. Baptism is the sacramental rite that admits the believer to the Holy Eucharist and to participate in the life of the congregation. The Prayer Book also says that the union established between the person baptized and God is permanent. Those who are baptized in the Name of the Holy Trinity are united to Christ and other baptized people forever. God remains faithful to the covenant that he made with us in Baptism even when we are unfaithful. Anyone who desires baptism for the reasons stated may be baptized. Each candidate for Holy Baptism is to be sponsored by one or more baptized persons. Any infant or child may be baptized provided the parents or Godparents (sponsors) are willing to insure that the child will be brought up in the "knowledge and love of the Lord." Holy Baptism is full incorporation into the church. All baptized persons are welcome at the Lord s Supper in the Episcopal Church. The role of parents and godparents in infant baptism is enormous. These persons make the vows of the baptismal covenant in the name of and for the sake of a candidate who is not mature enough to speak for himself or herself. It is a great responsibility, as well as a great joy, to nurture a child in the Christian faith. Labor Day Weekend: On Saturday September 1 through Monday, September 3, the O Connell Family will be hosting Alex s Lemonade Stand from 12 noon to 4:00 pm each day at Grace Church. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra Alex Scott ( ). In 2000, 4-yearold Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. John, Megan, John and Ellie O Connell invite you to stop by for some lemonade, which will support cancer research. They also invite anyone who wishes to join them working at the stand to come on by. 12 Sunday, September 2: As we have for the last 7 years, we will collect school supplies for children served by HAWC (Healing Abuse, Working for Change). On Sunday, September 2nd, we will bless the backpacks and supplies given at both services before bringing them to the children. Please see the announcement on page 14 for a listing of supplies requested. Back to School Prayer: On Sunday, September 2 at the 10:30 am service, we will have a special prayer for all teachers and students returning to their schools for the academic year. All are invited to come and support those engaged in education. (We will also have the Birthday Prayer at both services for those celebrating birthdays in September). Wednesdays in the Fall: The Parish Choir resumes rehearsals on September 5th at 7:30 pm, with their first service singing in the Chancel on Sunday, September 9th. Rehearsals on Sundays at 9:30 am resume that Sunday. The Choir School at Grace Church resumes sessions on September 12th at 4:00 pm. Holy Eucharist will be celebrated each Wednesday at 6:00 pm beginning September 12th. If you are interested in the Parish Choir or the Choir School, please see Mark Engelhardt. Everyone is welcome to attend the weekly service of Holy Eucharist. Vestry Meetings: Rather than meet in August, the Vestry will spend three hours on Saturday, September 8th to consider the mission and support of Grace Church. This meeting will take place from 9:00 to 12 noon. The regular September Vestry meeting will take place on Monday, September 24th at 7:00 pm. Upcoming Baptisms: On September 9th, Dominic and Caden Quartarone will be baptized at the 10:30 am service with reception following, and on Sunday, September 16th, Elizabeth Grace Rae will be baptized, with her adorable sister Katherine in attendance. Come and welcome these saints of God! The Rev. Laurel Deery returns to Grace Church: Sunday, September 9th is Laurel s first Sunday as our Deacon. Laurel interned with us in 2006 while in the ordination process. Since then, she has served as the Deacon to the North Shore Deanery and as Deacon to St. John s, Gloucester. Laurel will be assisting us with our outreach efforts and will be preaching and assisting on Sunday mornings. We are so excited to have Laurel here for the next three years as Deacon. 12

13 Young and the Restless Chapel for September: This month, we sing the story of Joshua and the wall that came down by obeying God s command to march and blast horns. We too will bring the walls down. Young and the Restless Chapel takes place the second Sunday of each month at 9:00 am. Hope to see you on September 9th! Church School Teachers Retreat: On Sunday, September 30th from 3:30 pm until 6:30 pm, Jane Stewart will lead a spiritual retreat for all Church School teachers throughout the North Shore Deanery. The retreat will provide opportunity for quiet reflection and sharing on teaching and learning. Ms. Stewart has over thirty years experience in preparing and leading prayer services and reflection experiences for a wide range of groups. In addition, Ms. Stewart is a certified spiritual director having completed a two-year certificate program in spiritual direction through Cardinal Stritch University.
