4 Psalm 84:1-6 The Epistle Hebrews 2:14-18 Since God's children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. 4

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed-- and a sword will pierce your own soul too." There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. 5

8 Visitor Information Welcome to those of you here for the first time. If you have children, they are invited to join the Church School at 10:30 am with our trained teachers. They will join us in church at the Peace and for Communion. All baptized children of any age are welcome to receive communion. All are welcome by God to the heavenly banquet. The Episcopal Church offers the sacraments to anyone baptized in any denomination who, through prayer and thoughtful consideration, desires them. Please come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, whether you are an Episcopalian or not, or to receive a blessing. Please join in the singing! Hymnals are located in the pew and the numbers are listed in the leaflet. S numbered hymns are found in the front of the hymn book. The Book of Common Prayer may also be found in the rack in front of you. We are a self-supporting congregation, so when we pass the plate in the middle of the service, please be generous. Today s collection will support our ministries to the community. When coming to the rail for communion, please kneel or stand to the left of the person in line directly in front of you until the rail is full. You may receive both the wafer and wine, or may ask for a blessing. Please let the priest know if you need gluten free. Debbie, the priest, will be available after the service to answer any questions you might have. Please let her know how your thoughts about today s service. 9 Update from our Annual Meeting The meeting opened with a reading of an abbreviated version of our new Diocesan Mission Strategy. We were asked to consider how our mission at Grace Church relates to this new mission strategy. Our Finance Committee (Jonathan Davis, Chair, Jesse Angeley, Treasurer, Anne Busteed, Tom Lemons and Angela Williams) gave a clear overview of the past year, our 2017 Budget and our plan for paying off our debt to our Diocese for non payment of the assessments ended up with a surplus of $500+. That came in large part from most of us fulfilling our 2016 pledge commitments, with a few increasing their original amounts. It also shows that the Finance Committee offered a realistic budget for s budget is close to last year s budget with the exception of a major increase in our oil expense. With income holding steady, the utilities costs will put us in a deficit situation for this year. We have a reasonable hope that by year s end, things will even out, as the amount of deficit is manageable. Jonathan Davis, Jesse Angeley and Joanne Moar, our Senior Warden, worked out an agreement with our Diocese that is both fair and doable. Our original balance was $91,000+. The agreement calls for us to pay $10, 000 each year and at the end of that year, they will reduce our debt by another $ The formula means that after 7 years, we will have paid $70,000 and they will have written off $21,000. But the agreement doesn t end there. For every $1 over the $10, 000 in any given year, the Diocesan Budget will match that $1. Here s an example of how this works: Grace Church pays $15, 000 toward the debt in The Diocese reduces the debt by $3,000 and matches the extra $5000 we paid. So, our $15,000 is now worth $23,000 ($3000 for the first $10,000 and another $5,000 for the extra we paid). If we were able to raise $50, 000 this year, with these incentives, our $91,000 debt would be paid in full! So our challenge is to first raise the $10, 000 and then see how much more we can give. We also elected two new Vestry members: Christopher Patzke and Jane Eskelund. We look forward to working with them to as we do God s work at Grace Church. After an update on the Bowditch School Partnership we adjourned for a potluck luncheon, which was delicious!!! 9

10 Altar Guild Pauline Grady, Directress of the Grace Church Altar Guild, has a plea for men and women to get involved in the preparation of our services at Grace. This ministry is a spiritual, educational, and rewarding experience, where God is always present in your life. As your Altar Guild Directress, I encourage your participation in this important ministry. Training is provided. During the 2016 church year, altar members prepared for, attended, and cleared away after Sunday morning services, funerals, baptisms, Ash Wednesday and Holy Week services, and Christmas services. Members are currently scheduled for one week a month, although more members would mean less frequency of duty. Most come in on Saturday to set up for Sunday, and then clean up after the service. Altar Guild members are not responsible for the Celtic Service at 5:00 pm. If you have questions or interest, please see Pauline Grady. Thank you! Holy Land Trip If you, a family member or friend are interested in this year s Diocesan trip to the Holy Land, please see Debbie. Debbie and Bishop Gayle Harris are the leaders of this trip from November 24 through December 6. Our Episcopal brothers and sisters welcome us with warmth and love. Their witness is an inspiration for us and our presence supports them in their struggle. (And the food is really good!) The cost is usually around $ and includes everything. Debbie would love to have you join her this year on this very special pilgrimage. 10
