1 Queen s Messenger Queen of Peace Church 2550 Millville Avenue ~~ Hamilton, Ohio September 2018 FIRST FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The Eucharist is the flame and source of Love. We will have Adoration and Benediction on the First Friday on September 7th. We have Eucharistic Exposition with Benediction and Confessions on every Wednesday starting at 7:00pm. In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. 3 Page 3 Deacon Mike's Corner Lately, I have read a few articles about the origin and authenticity of a woman known as St. Veronica. There is precious little info on her other than her association with the Stations of the Cross. Why would the Church name her as a saint without much info on her? In the early centuries of the Church, there was not a formal canonization process. Saints were declared or acclaimed by the people after death. Later on, the Church formalized the canonization process in order to prevent such abuses as venerating someone about whom little or nothing is known. The name Veronica is Hebrew for "true face" and refers to the story that after a woman used her veil to wipe away the blood on Christ's face during his carrying the cross of his crucifixion. That veil was imprinted with an image of the face of Jesus. By giving the woman a name that symbolizes the story, the early Christians may have been giving a clue that this was a well-known story but that the person who assisted Christ was unknown. It would be similar to a hospital referring to an unknown accident victim as "John Doe", a well-known medical pseudonym. The person exists but the hospital assigned him a generic identity until his true identity could be ascertained. In the same way, it is possible that an unknown woman gave practical assistance to Jesus during his journey to Calvary. The first Christians may have only known what she did, not who she was, and so assigned a name that reflected the story of her encounter with Jesus. So it is possible to honor St. Veronica even though we have no knowledge of her beyond the fact that early Christians believed that a certain woman of Jerusalem helped Jesus during the Via Delarosa? Of course, it is! Even today, anonymous heroes are honored for their deeds even though nothing in particular about their lives can now be known. For example, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. (Continued) (Deacon Mike s Corner Continued) In some old documents I found references to a woman named Mary, wife of Cleophus, who was said to be the sister in law of the Virgin Mary. Is this speculation, or do we know something about this woman? In John 19:25 we read, "But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophus, and Mary Magdalene." The exact nature of the sisterhood between Jesus' mother and Mary of Cleophus is unknown. It is possible that Cleophus was the brother of Joseph, which would make the Marys sisters in laws. Or perhaps they were sisters in the sense of extended family as cousins...

6 Virtues in Practice Queen of Peace School will be using a program called Virtues in Practice again this year to achieve our Archdiocesan Accreditation Goal for Catholic identity. Virtues in Practice is a three-year program for children in preschool through eighth grade to help them see the virtues as concrete expressions of the Catholic faith. This year covers the Theological Virtue of Hope. The Year of Hope emphasizes study skills, because in order to fulfill God s plan for our lives we need to develop the talents He has given to us. In the classroom, Virtues in Practice emphasizes role-playing so that students can practice how to act when using a particular virtue in real situations. These activities usually entail a discussion and a behavior goal to help the child develop the particular virtue. At home, families complete a Home Project each month. A list of project ideas is sent home at the beginning of each month. Parents may use the suggestion list to choose one project-or-create their own project for any month. Additionally, this year we are including the charism of Divine Mercy in our goal by continuing a school-wide emphasis on service projects. Look for more information in this newsletter about our first service AN INVITATION TO CATHOLIC PHYSICIANS AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS The Catholic Medical Association (CMA) is a national, physician led community of healthcare professionals that informs, organizes, and inspires its members, in steadfast fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church, to uphold the principles of the Catholic faith in the science and practice of medicine. We are happy to announce the formation of the Greater Cincinnati Guild of the CMA designed to provide support, education, and fellowship for Catholic physicians and healthcare professionals in the area.
