2 Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Coastal Plains Area: The Lord is at work in the world and in the Coastal Plains Area. We have seen the Lord s hand in many ways and sensed the wind of the Spirit blowing. After hearing the news in late January that our candidate for Area Minister was not able to accept our call, in February, the clergy of the CPA met for lunch at First Christian Church, Pasadena. We heard from our Regional Minister Rev. Dani Loving Cartwright and dialogued together on the future of the CPA. We are grateful for First Christian Church, Pasadena s hospitality in hosting this event. The Executive Council is currently taking applications for Cluster Pastors that will be a pastoral presence with the clergy and churches in each cluster. The Search and Call Team that worked so faithfully and diligently for 2.5 years has agreed to stay on for a determined amount of time to locate an Area Minister. How thankful we are to their willingness to see this process through. Please daily hold these dedicated Disciples in prayer. The CPA recently sent a truckload of rice to Good Samaritan Ministries. It is a blessing to be able to help this important work of compassion. The Outreach Team is also leading us in a second mission trip to Ecuador this summer. If you are interested in this good work, please contact the CPA office. What a joy it is to be able to serve as Christ s heart, hands, feet, and mind to a world in need of the good news of God s love and care. We have been blessed in the past year with several new Ministers in the Area who are giving their lives in service to our churches. These new leaders are adding a new dimension and vitality to the CPA as they bring new skill sets and fresh new ideas to help as we minister in the Church and in Southeast Texas. Recently, there have been numerous questions concerning the Disciple Oaks Campground, lovingly called Gonzo. Our beloved campground that we share with the BBA has been struggling financially during this international recession. Not only have our churches seen a downturn in giving, but the camp has also. There has also been a decrease in the number of children and youth attending our camps for various reasons. Denominational campgrounds across the United States have faced similar issues and some have sadly discovered that closing is often their only option. The DCCI Board recognizes the issues and is diligently working with Rev. Dale Fowler, the Camp Program Manager to keep our campground alive and well. As CPA and BBA churches, men s and women s groups, along with individuals have heard of the immediate need, there has been an outpouring of both financial giving and sharing of time and energy to help renew our grounds. Even the youth of Taylor Lake Christian Church and Round Rock Christian Church came during their spring break to help spruce up the buildings on the campgrounds. They are to be commended! The DCCI Board voted at their meeting on March 9 to replace the girls dorm and kitchen air conditioners that no longer work. Funds from a generous gift from The Woodlands Christian Church and other gifts helped provide these much needed air conditioners. Please continue to hold the campground, staff, and board in prayer as they make important decisions in the next several months. As this Lenten season concludes with the glorious words, Alleluia, Christ is risen, may we experience renewal, resurrection, recreation, and fresh new starts in each of our lives, in the life of our local churches, in the life of the Coastal Plains Area, and in the life of the universal Church. The Spirit, the pneuma, the very breath of God brings new life and blows in ways that we cannot dream or imagination. Annie Dillard has this wonderful statement about living in the awesome and magnificent power of resurrection in her book, Teaching a Stone to Talk: On the whole, I do not find Christians, outside the catacombs, sufficiently sensible of the conditions. Does anyone have the foggiest idea what sort of power we so blithely invoke? Or, as I suspect, does no one believe a word of it? It is madness to wear ladies' straw hats and velvet hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers should issue life preservers and signal flares; they should lash us to our pews. Disciples, let s put on our crash helmets, our life preservers, and get out the flares, because the Spirit is powerfully at work in our lives and is leading us in new ways of being Church. Now to our God who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3: Resurrection Blessings! By Brenda Warren CPA Moderator Rev. Brenda G. Warren, CPA Moderator The Wind and Waves 2 cpa@cpadisciples.org
