g{x `xááxçzxü University Park United Methodist Church June 2016 The UPark Core Values: Inclusive, Intergenera onal, Interfaith, Interna onal Our Vision: To be a community of Disciple leaders who prac ce stewardship and Hospitality as we engage each other and the world around us. Anticipation... In a mere 40 days, we will be joined together for the purpose of ministry, equipping disciples, disrup ng and transforming our worlds. Are you excited? I sure hope so because I am. Even as I conclude my ministries at First Aurora and the Iliff School of Theology, I hold you in my heart. When I go to sleep, I am thinking of you; and when I awake, my thoughts and my prayers find their way to you. I am already seeking God s vision, hopes and desires for us; and as a result, I am filled with an cipa on. In a mere 40 days, we will be joined together to begin the next chapters of our lives; to encounter, embrace and manifest the next phases of our individual and collec ve callings and purposes. Are you anxious and/or afraid? Well, I sure hope so because I am. Without a doubt, our new rela onship is a God movement, a Missio Dei (mission of and from God); and a God sized mission will and should certainly s r up a wealth of adrenaline. In a mere 40 days, we will begin the journey of ge ng to know each other. We will assess, evaluate and celebrate our past and present experiences. We will dialogue, sharing stories, affirming each other; and also, asking hard ques ons, and possibly making hard decisions. As reminded by this Pentecost season, we will dare to dream God sized dreams, or in the recent words of Rev. Dr. Cathie Kelsey while a ending the 2016 General Conference, we will invoke courageous ecclesial imagina on. Yes, as I look forward to the work that we are being called to do with deep convic on and enthusiasm, I feel bu erflies in my stomach. As I seek to imagine, in my finite humanity, even a par al manifesta on of this Missio Dei, my heart skips a beat, my body trembles, and I am overwhelmed with an cipa on. 2 Page 2 The Messenger, June 2016 Con nued from Page 1 The beauty of an cipa on is, it is a me of promise and possibili es. It is a me of reflec on. It is a me of prepara on. It is a me of rejuvena on. It is a me of wai ng. Andy Warhol said, the idea of wai ng for something makes it more exci ng. So we wait together. As we wait, I invite you to glimpse and enjoy a few moments (see pictures below) gi ed to us along the way. Moreover, as we wait, we can know that we are connected by the common thread of an cipa on. Eternal and All wise God, Bishop Elaine Stanovsky, Rev. Dr. Melanie Rosa, and Rev. Paul Ko ke, we give you thanks for this sacred gi. In the precious love of Jesus the Christ, Rev. Valerie L. This is the first work team going since The Ebola crisis caused the 2014 and 2015 work teams to be cancelled. Since this is the first me back in three years there are only seven members travelling. Most have been to Sierra Leone before. The members of University Park UMC have generously supported Sierra Leone. Hundreds of hygiene kits for girls have been made, the Men's Fellowship has sponsored scholarships for nine teachers to become cer fied, many individuals provide scholarships for primary and secondary school students, and the Christmas offering for Sierra Leone has been generous. Sierra Leone is a Spotlight Ministry of the Rocky Mountain UMC Conference. In 2015 the Bridge of Love Offering at the Annual Conference raised $16,201 for the Ebola Recovery effort of the Sierra Leone UMC Conference. The plan for the work team this year is to observe and survey the current situa on a er Ebola. We hope to make joint decisions with the local UMC and Clinic staff on what is most needed and how we can best help. The team will work with Nar Sarah Clinic, Heritage UMC High School, and the Kabala School for the Blind. Visits will be made to the Kabala Amputee/War Wounded Camp, some local remote and isolated villages, special projects outside of the Kabala area, and of course many friends will be seen. The intent is to have the normal work teams going to Sierra Leone again in the summer of Teams are open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 75. It is hoped one team will mainly be comprised of University Park members. Contact Hope or Les Law for addi onal informa on. Hope: hopelaw@gmail.com or Les: hopeles2@gmail.com.

Page 4 The Messenger, June 2016 EVANSTON CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL WHOLENESS AND HEALING In her book, "Prac cing Our Faith," by Ana Maria Pineda, Ana writes: "Just as the human need for hospitality is a constant, so it seems, is the human fear of the stranger. The stranger seems to portend danger some mes of physical harm, but also because the stranger represents the unknown." It is one of the goals of the Evanston Center for Spiritual Wholeness and Healing to reconcile our innate fear of the stranger with the challenge given to us by our Savior, to live our faith by loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. The two photographs included with this brief ar cle are tes monials to what the reconcilia on, which occurs daily at the Evanston Center, looks like. We are so grateful that the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church has recently recognized these healing efforts! University Park UMC has been chosen to receive a financial grant of $45,000 for the support of the ministry and outreach of the Evanston Center for Spiritual Wholeness and Healing!! Details of how this grant will be used over the next three years will follow in the July newsle er issue. For now, we reluctantly say "Hasta luego," to the Rev. Dr. Dale Beck, our UPark Interim Senior Pastor, who has worked relessly on behalf of the Evanston Center during his year with us. He not only assisted with the grant, but also assembled an excellent Board of Directors for the Center with Liz Beindorff, accep ng the primary leadership role. We warmly an cipate the Rev. Dr. Valerie Jackson, our incoming Senior Pastor, who brings many ministerial gi s to our congrega on. On a personal note, I would like to thank University Park UMC for suppor ng my leadership efforts as Director of the Evanston Center for the past 1 1/2 years. I will be officially re ring on June 30, This will free me to travel to Iowa to support my husband, Steve, as interim senior pastor of West Des Moines UMC (he will serve there un l July 2017) and to care for my mother, who lives an hour away from there. As of July 1, the Evanston Center will be guided by the enthusias c leadership of Kevin Garman, who is already important to UPark UMC in many ways. Kevin is commi ed to the inclusive, interfaith, intercultural, and intergenera onal ministry se ng that the Evanston Center has become. I wish you many blessings as we con nue together in the service of Christ our Lord, Rev. Linda Bibb

University Park United Methodist Church, June 2016 Page 5 As the beau ful spring weather begins to turn warmer and eventually gives rise to summer, so too will our church experience another change to its season. Reverend Dale Beck will be leaving University Park UMC, effec ve June 30 th, a er serving us with such compassion and grace over the last year. Dale took on a tenuous role as interim pastor as it is never easy to replace someone so beloved as was Paul Ko ke. As chair of the Staff Parish Rela ons Commi ee, and someone that has worked closely with Dale over the past year, I can say he has filled his role admirably Due to his efforts, and the dedica on and loyalty of his staff, our church is ready to embrace the new pastor. On behalf of SPRC and all of the congrega on, I want to wish Dale the best in his future. I suspect his future will entail many great hikes and some well deserved down me. We are planning a farewell celebra on in Dale s honor on Sunday, June 26 th from 10 am to 10.30am. Please join us for some cake and conversa on as we bid farewell to a great man. I hope to see many of you there! Cordially, Tom Gonnella, SPRC Chair Staff Parish Relations Committee On Sunday, June 26, we will also acknowledge Rev. Linda Bibb s 1 1/2 years as the Director of Evanston Center. Linda and Dale will both be honored at the farewell from 10 10:30am. 10 Page 10 The Messenger, June 2016 Disability Advocacy Ministry What NOT to Say to Someone With a Chronic Illness! By: Ann Pietrangelo; May 2, 2016 Who among us hasn t put their foot in their mouth on occasion? Sickness and disability can make you feel uncomfortable and tongue ed. Here s what you need to know about people who have a chronic illness: they re people just like you. They don t necessarily want to talk about their health every minute of the day and they don t need anyone to remind them of it when they re out trying to have a good me. It s highly likely that they ve spent a great deal of me learning about their condi on and how to cope with it, so unsolicited advice is probably not a good idea, especially if they re like these gems: At least it s not (whatever): The implica on here is that things could be worse and they certainly could, but so what? Just because something could be worse doesn t mean it s not challenging or that a person can t be having a hard me. Telling someone with type 1 diabetes that they re fortunate they don t have stage IV pancrea c cancer is not helpful. Let s put it this way: When you have the flu and you re feeling like death warmed over you probably don t need anyone to tell you how fortunate you are not to have a hot poker s cking in your eye, too you already know that, but you re s ll sick. Comparing diseases is a bad idea. Try this instead: I m not familiar with (whatever disease). If you don t mind, I d like to hear a li le bit about it. Or this: I don t know what it s like for you, but I m here for you. You just need to de stress: Yes, don t we all. If you re alive, you re going to have a certain amount of stress. Some we can eliminate, some we can learn to cope with, and some we re just stuck with. Stress can certainly affect your health. And having a chronic illness? Well, that s stressful. What you don t want to do is sound as though you re blaming that person for crea ng their own illness. It s cruel to imply that they are ill because they don t know how to handle life. If you have a friend who seems stressed, make a specific offer to help out, like making dinner, running an errand, babysi ng, etc. Help ease a bit of that stress. It s all mental you just need some posi ve thinking: Tough one. Of course a posi ve a tude is be er than a nega ve one. The mind body connec on is very real and quite powerful. But it s important to remember that people with a chronic illness have the same range of healthy emo ons as everyone else. They can feel sad or angry or proclaim it a frustra ngly crappy day and s ll be posi ve people. And let s face it, disease isn t all in your head. Posi ve people get sick, too. Let s not pile on by telling them they could fix it if they would only try harder. Instead, you could offer to engage in some posi ve mind body ac vi es together. Make a date to get massages, take a yoga class, learn to meditate, etc. (Con nued in next month s Messenger) SUMMER WORSHIP VOLUNTEERS FOR THE PENIEL AT 9:00 am SERVICE This summer we will have Peniel at 9 service in Wasser Chapel at 9 a.m. Please help us make this a welcoming and meaningful worship me. Let us know what Sunday you can usher, read, or greet at the 9am service: June 5 September 4. Please contact Diane Felt ext. 103 or dfelt@universityparkumc.org

University Park United Methodist Church, June 2016 Page 11 Summer Worship Schedule PENIEL at NINE Our two Wasser Chapel services will be blended for the summer with quali es of the informal and Peniel where we connect and wrestle with God. The music will include both the Peniel band led by Kevin Garman and our excellent Gudvangen sisters, JoAnn and Renae, on the piano. We will meet in the cool of the morning at 9 am and hope to get to know some new people and experience worship in some new ways. Peniel is named for the place in Genesis where Jacob wrestled through the night with an angel and in the morning was given a blessing and a sign of his striving. The informal nature of the two services provides opportuni es to connect with each other and with God during this summer combined worship. And yes, it is our plan to return to the 8:30 Informal me and 10:30 Peniel on September 11! TRADITIONAL SERVICE Our tradi onal service will be held in the sanctuary at 10:30 Sunday mornings. So what is a tradi onal service? There isn t the smell of mothballs about it, or incense either. Our tradi onal service confronts real life issues and brings the gospel to address the same concerns and faith struggles that we meet in real life in a se ng that seems familiar and worshipful. Tradi onal worship connects with the deep expressions of faith in a way that is oriented to bulle n and hymnal. We enjoy the sound of the organ as well as piano and music that has a more classical feel. We see the signs of candles and communion table. We will worship at 10:30 for the summer and return to 11:00 on September 11. WORSHIP SCHEDULE June 5 September 4, 9:00am and 10:30am (details provided in the paragraphs above). June 26, Last Sunday for Senior Pastor Rev. Dale Beck and Evanston Director Rev. Linda Bibb. A farewell recep on between services will take place in the Courtyard from 10 10:30am. July 3, Blue Grass Sunday, One Unified Service at 10:30am, Iliff School of Theology Lawn (corner of Warren & University) Incoming senior pastor, Rev. Valerie Jackson, will join us that day. This comfortable se ng is on the lawn with lawn chairs, blankets, music, and fellowship me. It is a perfect day for invi ng neighbors, co workers, and friends. HOSPITALITY From 10 10:30am beneath the Courtyard por co, we will offer hospitality me. As in past years, this is a good me to mingle.for those a ending the 9:00am service to stay a er that service and for folks a ending the 10:30am service, to arrive early for hospitality me.

Page 12 The Messenger, June 2016 Finance Committee A STEWARDSHIP NOTE: Congratula ons and Thank You! At the end of April, one third of the way through the year, our opera ng expenses have exceeded income by $13,625. This deficit compares with a deficit in April, 2015 of $22,795. Of course we know that the toughest months of the year are just ahead of us. June, July and August are tradi onally hard months on church finances. Few of our expenses go down in these months and people tend to be out of town more. Our members and friends have been so suppor ve and we are so grateful. Please do not let up in this great effort. We are behind but at a level that we can make up if we all make an effort to give as we are able. At a glimpse, this is our opera ng budget at the end of the first four months. We are grateful for Troop 5 and the training that takes place. We also hope that this young man will inspire everyone to consider taking CPR and First Aid training. As the Troop 5 Commi ee Chair stated via , Exemplary behavior of this type should be noted and applauded. But it should not (and was not) ever to be done for a en on. The Eagle Scout asked not to be iden fied by name. He wrote, "I am not seeking a en on for it, it was just the right thing for me to do during both circumstances and I was very happy I was able to really make a difference for the two people." Following are the circumstances that took place. Recently, he a ended a party and no ced a young woman in the room that had been consuming alcohol, and was beginning to look sick. The young woman (a diabe c) collapsed into a seizure right before him. His training kicked in and he was able to manage this situa on un l the arrival of the paramedics. He returned to his dorm room to deal with the adrenalin rush that is the a ermath of such an experience. He was grateful for his training and reminiscent of the council that 1 in 4 who are trained in first aid/cpr will find themselves in a posi on to use those skills at least once in their lives. The following morning, the same Eagle became aware of a strange sound in the hallway. Once he entered the hall, he saw his floor s janitor on the floor in cardiac arrest. Again, his training and leadership took over. He called for support and performed CPR un l the paramedics arrived to take over for the second me in 24 hours. Approved by Troop 5 The deadline for the July Messenger submissions is Wednesday, June 15th. Please submit ar cles to Diane Felt at dfelt@universityparkumc.org

University Park United Methodist Church, June 2016 Page 15 From the Denver DA s Of ice Keep These Tips in Mind As warmer weather arrives, so do door to door solicita ons. Based on neighborhoods and home values, scammers can target people they believe have money. Residents should be cau ous any me a stranger comes knocking unsolicited, especially if they are trying to sell you goods or services. In Kentucky, consumers were warned about a phony door to door contractor scam where the con ar sts demanded money up front and promised to repair driveways damaged by winter. But the con ar sts le with the cash and didn't do the work. Or this one: Con ar sts go door to door claiming that several robberies have been reported in the area. They claim they are a security company and offer a free security inspec on. Of course, a person who is afraid of being robbed might be willing to get some "free" help with home security. Once in the door, the con ar st figures out a way to steal money on the spot or case the home for a future robbery. Another u lity scam is even trickier. A er a storm's power outage, scammers go door to door pretending to be from a u lity company and will offer help to get your lights and power back on quicker for a price, of course. The Federal Trade Commission has warned that some consumers actually fall for this one because they are concerned about having the electricity or heat off for a few days. The scammer might make the charge seem rela vely doable, only charging $50 or $100 up front to make sure the lights or heat gets back on quickly. The door to door person could even look like a u lity employee with a uniform or a badge. But no, it's a cra y disguise because no one from any u lity company will go door to door asking for money. It's a scam. If you pay, you'll wait anyway. Hours later: no lights, no cable. No heat or water. What's more, there's no sign of the person you thought might have been the ray of light in your dark hours. Here are some ps for avoiding door to door scams: Don't do business right on the spot. You can and should always get a second and even a third bid. Remember that a receipt is worth nothing unless the business is valid and reputable. Never pay for services in cash and be wary of paying up front for a product or service that will be delivered at a later date. Watch out for deals that offer steeply discounted prices that seem too good to be true. Listen for scare tac cs, like the solicitor telling you he smells a gas leak coming from your home. Be sure you read and understand any agreements or contracts you sign. Don't be afraid to offend someone by not doing business with them. Never let someone into your home that you did not invite. If the salesperson can t provide a city or county license for door to door sales, it s best not to buy anything from them.
