2 CCD ended for the school year last weekend and our parish school students look forward to starting their summer vacation this Friday. I offer congratulations to our graduates and my thanks to their parents and teachers. But I also want to take this opportunity to thank our administrators. In CCD we are blessed to have Mrs. Barbara Kareis and Mrs. Joan Purucker and in our school we are blessed to have Mr. Joe McBride. They bring great organizational skills to their leadership. But more importantly they bring a deep faith to their ministry. I am so very grateful for their good work. The vision and values that they bring to their work can be seen in the practical ways they help our children live their faith. On Tuesday, I will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for those graduating from our parish school and this Sunday I will preside at the commencement liturgies for those graduating from Aquinas High School. So, I ask all in our faith community to implore God s blessings upon our graduates, and to congratulate them for their accomplishment. I wish I could tell our graduates that their labors are now finished. I wish I could say to them the words of the parable, Well done, good and faithful servants! Enter into the joy of your rest. But there is only one speaker who has the authority to say this. Namely, the Speaker we will all hear when we graduate from our education on earth and enter the next life. The fact is our graduates in terms of their education still have a lot more work to do. There are many report cards yet to come. Then after all their schooling comes the rest of life. The education of our youth prepares us to enter into the school that really counts, the school of loving and devoted service to others as mature adults. In the school of life, hopefully it is the risen Lord who is our primary teacher. One customary thing to say to graduates is: You can accomplish anything you set your mind to! It is a nice saying but I am not sure everyone who wants to be a brain surgeon actually has the talent to be a brain surgeon. What I would tell our graduates is this: The good Lord has a plan for you. Whatever it is, He will give you the grace to accomplish it you can be sure of that. If we give ourselves over to God s will, He will see us through every hardship and every set-back. So, you can and should accomplish anything that is God s will for you. Therefore, stay focused on Jesus Christ. If our eyes are fixed on Christ, then we know what our goals ought to be. When I was a young priest, I heard Blessed Pope John Paul II offer high school students this basic wisdom, When you wonder about the mystery of yourself, look to Christ who gives you the meaning of life. When you wonder what it means to be a mature person, look to Christ who is the fullness of humanity. And when you wonder about your role in the future of the world and of the United States, look to Christ. Only in Christ will you fulfill your potential as an American citizen and as a citizen of the world community. We see Christ with our inner eyes of faith. Our inner eyes see better than our outer eyes do. If we study the Scriptures and share the life of the Church, then we can learn to see Christ and behold Him at all times. If we keep our inner eyes fixed on Christ, then we always know what to do. So, once again we congratulate our graduates for all their accomplishments. But above all, we congratulate them for the fact that they share in the risen life of Jesus Christ. As graduates of Catholic schools we pray that you will always believe in God. Seek His will. Keep your eyes on Christ. And for all our graduates, I hope you have a great summer.

In his message for the 48 th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Pope Benedict XVI writes, Every moment in the life of the Church community - catechesis, formation meetings, liturgical prayer, pilgrimages - can be a precious opportunity for awakening in the People of God, and in particular in children and young people, a sense of belonging to the Church and of responsibility for answering the call to priesthood and to religious life by a free and informed decision. The ability to foster vocations is a hallmark of the vitality of a local Church. With trust and perseverance let us invoke the aid of the Virgin Mary, that by the example of her own acceptance of God s saving plan and her powerful intercession, every community will be more and more open to saying yes to the Lord who is constantly calling new labourers to his harvest.
