1 NAVIGATOR Prayer List Sick & Deceased Al & Norma Ceglia Kevin Dubowsky Ken Dulany Joseph Humphrey Kent and Mary Lowther Louie Meine Wayne Pianfetti Joe Quealy Walter Vrooman Intentions of Pope Francis Josephites in the Congo Persecuted Christians in the Middle East Council Monthly Business Meeting September 20th 7:00pm in Upper Room Grand Knight My Brothers, My Brothers, Our council s barbeque team prepared and Tom Tighe, GK served dinner on both Friday and Saturday evenings of the annual Parish Pilgrimage to people. The dinners were greatly enjoyed and appreciated by all the pilgrims, their families and the pilgrimage support team members. Thank you to all who helped cook, serve, cleanup and provide support for the walkers over these 3 days. Also, a big thank you to all those who helped out at our Monthly Parish Breakfast on August 13 th. We had a good number of volunteers for the 7:30 Mass, but we could have used additional help after the 9:30 Mass. The breakfast was enjoyed by many parishioners. Our next Parish Breakfast is on September 10 th ; please come and help us out. Our council hosted a First Degree, our first for the new Columbian Year , on Monday August 28th. The degree was held at the Santa Maria Council 2475 Hall at 7:00 PM. Unfortunately, besides myself, only two other brothers from our council were present for the degree, brothers James Harmon and Joe Plummer. Thankfully, we did not have any candidates from our council to see such poor council support of this degree. Council 2475 had three candidates to join their ranks at the ceremony, as well as many sideliners from their council. Very embarrassing! Council 2475 hosts the next First Degree in their Hall on October 23 rd at 7:00 PM. Also very Chaplain Dear Brothers and families, With the beginning of September, we have the last 3 day weekend, with Labor day to remind us that summer is over, and life Fr. Charles, C.J. turns to a degree of normalcy with schools in session, family vacations are in the history books, and those retired can take a vacation and find freeways less crowded, motels and camp grounds empty and hopefully the weather is good. September's calendar has numerous feast days, and we resume our "Brothers in Prayer" on the 4th Tuesday (26th) at 7pm in the Josephite Chapel. (If you haven't attended, you can always come and join us and I will provide information on what to read from "Into the Breach.") The Josephite Fathers are welcoming Fr. Jacob Beya, CJ, the Superior General of the Josephite Order, for a formal visit. He arrived in Santa Maria on Sat. August 26th and departs for Belgium on September 5. He will be staying at the novitiate on Patterson Rd. and if someone wants to meet him, you can phone for an appointment. The challenges we face as Catholics never cease. The risk we run is to remain complacent and "leave it to others to stand up and be counted." But each of us was Baptized, and with that comes the responsibility to preach, by our actions the love of Christ. We cannot stand by and leave the challenges to others. I really think Continued on page 2 Continued on page 2 1

2 NAVIGATOR September 2017 Grand Knight (continued from page 1) disappointing was the very poor turnout for Highway Cleanup on August 26th where we again had only three knights participate: PGK Joe Ponce, PGK Jesse Ponce and brother Phil Sherry. We need to do much better than this, as knights and as a council. We have a couple of events this month: the San Lorenzo Seminary Gala Dinner on Sept. 9th, which I encourage all of you to attend and the second event is helping our Youth Director, Matt Olson, conduct the Soccer Challenge at St. Louis de Montfort Elementary School September 18th-22nd. Our Parish Fall Festival is coming on October on the 8 th, and as usual, volunteers are needed and appreciated. Our council is cooking and serving: hot dogs, hamburgers and pork loin sandwiches. Please come out with your whole family to make this parish event successful again this year. Vivat Jesus Tom Tighe, Grand Knight Deputy Grand Knight Brother Knights, I want to thank all of you who helped out with the annual Parish Pilgrimage, whether as support for the pilgrims throughout each day s walk, Matt Olson or as part of the BBQ team, who prepared and fed the many hungry souls such terrific dinners on both Friday and Saturday. Many, many thanks to you all! The upcoming Parish Festival is on October 8 th and we will again have a food booth. This year we will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs and pork loin sandwiches. Both our K of C booth and the festival as a whole need volunteers to step in and help out so we can again make this year s festival a big success. An hour or two is all we ask, either helping with our booth, or assisting in any of a wide variety of ways with the festival, every bit helps and it s FUN! I look forward to seeing LOTS of Knights out there to support this parish s only fundraiser! Matt Olson, Deputy Grand Knight Chaplain (continued from page 1) the best way to arm ourselves is to listen to our Catholic Radio station, 890am. You will hear Immaculate Heart Radio and Relevant radio have merged, and as a consequence the variety of programs and speakers is truly outstanding. If you have a family member whose faith is fading, encourage them to tune it. It is on 24/7. I wish you all a blessed listening experience. Fraternally, Fr. Charles, CJ Council Chaplain Faithful Navigator Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be the Faithful Navigator of our Assembly. I want to welcome and thank Father Santos for accepting the position as Faithful Friar to JJ Cantwell Assembly for the Columbian year We are honored to have his blessing in our assembly. Fourth Degree Assembly meetings are on the second Monday of the month at 7 pm. Reminder November 11 th 2017 will be our one day exemplification to the Patriotic Degree (4 th Degree), which will be held in Ventura. If you know or have a qualified 3 rd Degree Candidate, send in their forms to our Faithful Comptroller Sir Knight Dan Beck well ahead of time so that they don t miss out in the opportunity and honor to become a Faithful Sir Knight! Religiously Devoted Patriotically Proud For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. That s what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree allows K of C members to take this one step further. Sir Knight is more than just a title, it s an Honor! 4th Degree Meeting dates and places: September 11...La Purisima 3570 October St. Louis De Montfort November 13.Queen of Angels December 11 th santa Maria Council 2475 Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pray for us S.K. 6 NAVIGATOR September 2017 Field Agent Dear Brothers, I want to highlight this month what sets the Knights of Columbus insurance program apart from others in the industry. It s Our Commitment to Catholic Values, Charitable Giving, and Ethical Practices. Catholic: The Knights of Columbus is committed to being a Catholic company that upholds Catholic values and supports Catholic causes. The Knights of Columbus adheres to a strict investment screening protocol developed in part with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Knights of Columbus does not invest in companies that deal in lines of business that involve: abortions and abortifacients, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, contraception, for-profit health care that pays for any of the aforementioned, and pornography. The Knights also gives generously to the Church through various programs such as the Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP). Since 1981, RSVP has provided more than $67 million in scholarships to more than 110,000 men and women pursuing religious vocations. The Knights supports the Vatican and the Holy Father as well, helping to restore the façade of St. Peter s Basilica which was completed in 1999 for the millennial Jubilee. The Knights also purchased satellite equipment to help broadcast the pope s messages and Masses throughout the world, in addition to giving an annual donation to Pope Francis personal charity with proceeds from the K of C s Vicarius Christi fund. Charitable: The Knights of Columbus is one of the world s largest forces for good. In the past decade alone, the Knights of Columbus has donated more than $1.55 billion to charitable causes, and has performed more than 700 million hours of volunteer service. Knights have led major charitable initiatives including Coats for Kids, the Ultrasound Initiative, and Christians at Risk, and have also sponsored events and programs with organizations such as Special Olympics and the Global Wheelchair Mission. The Knights of Columbus insurance program coupled with the hard work and dedication of brother Knights anywhere helps power the Knights of Columbus charitable giving. The insurance program is a powerful financial en- gine that supports much of the good works we do, said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Through the insurance program, we are blessed with the opportunity to give generously and support numerous charitable and spiritual causes, building up society and the Church. Of course, this is closely tied to our Catholic identity and the fact that charity is our first principle, he continued. We are called to be our brother s keeper, and to look after the physical and spiritual well-being of those around us. But the fact is that without the insurance program, much of what we do.would simply not be possible. Ethical: For four consecutive years, the Knights of Columbus has been designated a World s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute, and is one of only a handful of companies in the insurance industry to have earned the honor. The World s Most Ethical Company evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of all aspects of a business operation, including its corporate citizenship and responsibility, its culture of ethics, its governance, and its leadership, innovation, and reputation. Contact me today to continue this conversation. Join in our commitment to upholding Catholic Values, Charitable Giving and Ethical Practices. Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, Pray for Us! 8 NAVIGATOR September 2017 G Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J McGivney od, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.)
