Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Deuteronomy 6:4-7 I must still read and study the catechism daily, and yet I cannot master it as I wish, but must remain a child and pupil of the catechism and I also do so gladly. Martin Luther Martin Luther didn t invent Christian education, but he certainly reclaimed it as a priority. Dear God, what misery I beheld! he lamented, reflecting on the poor state of teaching and learning in the congregations he visited in 1528 and Luther believed that Christians should have at least a basic grasp of the treasures of our tradition the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, the Ten Commandments, Holy Baptism and Holy Communion, etc. if we are to have a vibrant faith. So, he wrote the Small Catechism, a straightforward yet profound exposition of the Christian faith, to be used for instruction in the home. The catechism is a treasure itself, to borrow the words of Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, because it gives us common language for engaging the Bible, talking with others about our relationships with God and neighbors, making sense of our callings in daily life, and making a witness to Christ in the world. Luther placed the burden of responsibility on parents for the education of their families, yet we are also gathered in our congregation as family in Christ. So, in honor of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, let s rediscover the Small Catechism together. Thanks to a generous gift, each and every household at Peace will receive an illustrated 500 th anniversary edition of the Small Catechism to use for study and devotion during Lent and beyond. Please find your copy at church! Weekly Wednesday evening prayer in Lent will focus on the Small Catechism, so please bring your copy along with you. And consider making a commitment to read the catechism as a Lenten discipline or at another time this year. God bless your continuing education, and may you discover, according to Luther s firm conviction, that the longer you work with the catechism, the less you know of it, and the more you have to learn! 3 Sunday, March 12th Move your clocks AHEAD one hour! On Saturday, March 4 th at 9:30 am, the Property Committee cordially invites one and all to attend a Pre-Easter clean up and dust off for our church facilities. We will concentrate on window washing, wood work dusting and pew polishing. Supplies will be furnished. If you have favorite tools for these tasks, bring them along. Depending on volunteer participation, other small repair jobs may be undertaken. Many hands make light work. Come join the fun! 6:30 Pippa's parents would like to visit at the start of Summer. Unfortunately, Pippa and Nancy do not have a spare space for them to stay. Do you know of anyone who has a spare room they could sleep in for about 3 weeks? We would offer payment. 4 Council Blurbs The council met Thursday February 16 to discuss the business of the church. We discussed the exciting new opportunities that are happening with our Pioneer church neighbors and helping to serve our community. The congregational meeting will be held Sunday February 26 between services. We will elect Synod assembly representatives, ratify the term limits for our financial secretary and treasurer and ratify the changes to our constitution that were provided by the ELCA model constitution. Correspondence was received from Holden and the SW Synod thanking us for our generous gifts in 2016 towards their ministries. The finance committee reported that they are looking for a few members to form an audit committee and we are always looking for a few more people to help with the Sunday counting of offerings. Anyone interested can talk to a member of the finance committee. For the remainder of Lent, we hope that you will join us for a Soup Supper each Wednesday evening. It is a time of delicious soups and breads and wonderful fellowship. All are welcome. Please feel free to bring a friend!! Supper is served at 5:45 p.m. Following our delicious meal, we meet in the sanctuary for Holden Evening Prayer at 6:30 p.m.

5 OUTREACH MINISTRY NEWS Communities in Schools Food Collection We are continuing to collect food for CIS! Great food items to consider while you are at the grocery store include: Children and Families Packaging Project Families with Sunday School age Kids and Younger Children Pop top cans of soup Individual serve pasta: pop top or just add water Instant Oatmeal Individual Serving Size Cold Cereal Fruit Cups Granola Bars Juice Boxes Peanut Butter: individual serving size Ritz Crackers: short sleeves preferred Mark your Calendars for March 19 th! We will be packaging the CIS food on March 19 th during the Sunday School hour with our Sunday School kids. We also invite parents to join their children, bring younger siblings and additionally families with younger children! We will have a short activity to introduce hunger awareness to the kids and then we will help fight hunger by helping with our CIS packaging project. We hope to provide 50 packages of supplemental weekend food! Power of One Day If you have never heard of the Power of One Day you are not alone! The Outreach Ministry Team just learned of this organization last month! The Power of One Day helps connect ministries in our area with needs to volunteers in our community. The organization has been hosting a monthly luncheon to connect community organizations with each other. They are now including churches to help connect volunteers to organizations. Two members of our outreach team were able to attend the luncheon and bring back some helpful information on needs in our community! This organization also provides a web site to help individuals connect to opportunities. The web site is set up by category. So if you have a particular talent or area of service you are interested in the web site will direct you to several local community organizations that might be a good match! The web site also includes some information on where to donate what! Check it out at and click on the volunteer menu at the top of the page. The Outreach Ministry Team will meet on March 19 th after second service! If you are interested in joining our team in planning, brainstorming, and dreaming of what the future of our ministry here at Peace looks like, all are welcome! 6 Elementary Retreat 3 rd 6 th grade at Lutherwood Friday, March 17th - Saturday, March 18th Elementary Youth (youth entering 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades) Week at Camp Cost - $25.00 Leave Friday at 2:30 p.m. Return Saturday at 9:15 p.m. June 26th - July 1st $ (each camper is receiving a $ Campership) Please sign up and turn in money by Sunday, March 5th Youth & Confirmation Students Custom Design Camp At Camp Lutherhaven (Idaho) July 16th - July 21st. $ Sign up by Sunday, April 30th Activities include: service projects around camp, study time with Pastor Nate, challenge course, climbing tower, zipline, swimming, canoeing and campfires! We will also spend a day at Silverwood and at Shoshone. Leave Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Return Friday at 9:00 p.m. (approximate times and are subject to change) We will be traveling to camp in the Church Van, Both Pastor Nate and Bill are going as well as older youth. 7 Western States Youth Gathering June 26th - July 2nd California Lutheran University - Thousand Oaks, California $ The Western States Youth Gathering happens every 3 years for high school youth. It takes place on the campus of California Lutheran University. It will feature mass gatherings with great speakers and musicians, learning and small group experiences. It will also include an immersion experience in LA and a Southern California beach party, and much more! In addition to the gathering, we will go down early and spend a day at Disneyland! Youth 8th - 12th Grades fools Night Out March 31st - April 1st Cost $25.00 We will be joining other churches for a night of worship, travel, games, open gym, ice skating, trampolines, pizza and much more! Meet at Peace at 6:45 p.m. (please eat dinner first) We will bring you directly home around 6:00 a.m. Sign up deadline is Wednesday, March 22nd

8 Saturday, February 4th - 8:30 a.m. Monthly potluck and signup was held on February 8 th, total attendance was six. We agreed to: Discontinue the monthly team meetings and potlucks due to low participation. This will start March I will send reminder notices to each team member one month prior to the month they will be serving. List of dates musicians play and choir sings will be included with reminder. Most leaders prefer to make their own signup sheets, however if you would like one provided that can be done. TEAM LEADERS: Leaders will advise me weekly of any changes made to the monthly serving calendar. Have a member who would like to know more about Deacon, Usher, Sacristan or Asst. Minister. -Have them work with someone that regular serves in this position FAN social advocacy day in Olympia Fellowship on the drive, looking confusingly over the issues to be brought before our legislators.tanf? Farm to Schools? Civil Legal Aid Program? McCLeary Decision? Office for Homeless Youth? Carbon taxes? Confusion! How do I speak intelligently about these things? WHAT do I think about these issues? Is this what advocating is?...legislators and aids listening, and sharing.fan social advocacy day. My expectation was to go and learn about issues, the legislative process, how to advocate effectively and to gain knowledge and understanding. What I encountered were passionate people, passionate about issues. I learned that effective advocacy requires a commitment to become educated on the issues, to hear from all sides involved, to have conversations and to discern how, as a disciple of Christ, to stand up for the vulnerable.
