1 March 2016 Peace Lutheran Church We proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles - 1 Corinthians 1:23 [The theology of the cross] is not a single chapter in theology, but the key signature for all Christian theology. - Jürgen Moltmann Good Friday worship is not usually well attended. Practical reasons abound: It s a weekday, we have work or school or other commitments, and anyway, Friday evenings are better spent unwinding, right? But, I suspect there s another reason for the empty sanctuary I suspect that we don t really value Good Friday in the first place. After all, what s so good about the humiliation and execution of an innocent man? We d rather not be exposed to the crucifixion; we d rather not sit with suffering. If that s true, then we re a lot like the first disciples who were nowhere to be found on Good Friday either. The result of this pattern, however, is that we go straight from the triumphant Hosannas of Palm Sunday to the joyful shouts of He is risen on Easter, conveniently skipping over the snarls of Crucify him. But the cross is at the very heart of the Christian confession. We proclaim Christ crucified because it is on the cross that we see God s solidarity with a suffering creation. It is on the cross that God refuses to meet violence with violence. It is on the cross God absorbs our hostility and offers only mercy in return. And, it is on the cross that God sets the pattern for faithful discipleship. If any want to become my followers, Jesus calls, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me (Mark 8:34). Standing with the poor and outcast standing with Jesus can get you crucified. But, in losing yourself, he promises, you find abundant life. So, make a commitment to worship on Good Friday this year. Come to the cross, and sit with the discomfort of Jesus suffering and death at our hands. Then, turn in love toward all those who suffer, and see in their faces the face of your Lord. 2 Holy Week and Easter We are entering the most significant week of the church year. Holy Week is the time when we revisit Christ s last week on earth, his entrance into Jerusalem to confront the powers and principalities and ultimately lay down his life. We are invited into the drama as we shout our hosannas on Palm Sunday, followed by commemorating the institution of the Lord s Supper on Maundy Thursday, and walking the road to Calvary on Good Friday. Please come and join in as we worship together on these days. Maundy Thursday Good Friday Easter Sunday Worship 12:00 pm & 6:45 pm 12:00 pm & 6:45 pm 8:15 am & 10 :45 am Chancel Easter Garden During Holy Week, please bring non-fragrant flowering plants (such as: Azaleas, hydrangeas or tulips) potted or in an arrangement for the chancel garden on Easter. Please do not bring Easter lilies due to allergies. You may take your plant or arrangement home after the last Easter service or any time during the following week.

We will invite them to visit us at Peace to see what our congregation can offer them. 4 Youth News 2016 Summer Mission Trip Peace Lutheran Youth (7 th 12 th Grade) SYNOD YOUTH RETREAT March 4 th 6 th CAMP BERACHAH Near Auburn July 29 th August 8 th Mt Cross Lutheran Camp near Santa Cruz, CA Cost is $ Fund raising will pay for the rest We will be joining our friends from First Lutheran in Bothell for this 11 day trip. We are participating in the Special Friends Camp where you are paired with another youth to work with special need adult campers. We will also have beach time and a day in San Francisco. We are asking for half the money ($200.00) This trip is open to those presently in 8 th grade and above. PROGRAM INCLUDES: Worship, Music, Great guest speaker, Fun group activities, Zip lining, Swimming, Games & much, much more. Cost - $35.00 Please be sign-up, paperwork turned in and money paid ASAP. Times: Leave Peace on Friday at 5:45 pm on Friday Return to Peace at 11:45 am on Sunday

7 On February 15, eleven volunteers cleaned our kitchen: Lynn Coleman Virginia Baisch Marlys Tron Randall Tron Nancy Armstrong Liz Haworth Barb King Eleanor Kronlund Glenn Wilson Rodney Swenson Evelyn Swenson The contents of drawers, cupboards and the refrigerator were cleaned as well as the coffee and dishwasher areas. Eleanor Kronlund filled the salt and pepper shakers. The stainless steel counters were polished with a special polish donated by Karen Lohrman of which we are most grateful. Thank you for your gifts and elbow grease Congratulations to Rebecca VonWahlde who has been awarded a PLU President's Scholarship, one of the top academic and leadership scholarships offered by PLU. Nearly 600 qualified applicants applied for these scholarships this year, and the standards are high. Students must have a 3.8+ GPA or SAT score or 28+ ACT score to be eligible to even apply. This year the President s Scholarship recipients scored an average of SATA score, and average of 30 ACT, and have an average of 3.98 GPA. Rebecca was selected based on her academic achievements, co-curricular involvement, service and leadership, as well as her potential to affect positive change and leadership in both the academic and co-curricular life of the university. Congratulations Becky!!

10 Thank you to everyone for your prayers, visits, kind words and cards during Carol s illness and death. Carol and we truly felt loved and supported by you all. With the chemo, Dennis cancer had improved. I have improved and will be starting out-patient physical therapy. 11 Neighborhood Events SUMNER - MARCH 26 The 26th annual Sumner Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by East Pierce Firefighters Local 3520, will be held at Sunset Stadium, 1707 Main Street. Children are allowed on the field in the following age groups: 9 a.m.: 1-3 years 10 a.m.: 4-7 years 11 a.m.: 8-11 years Easter Bunny Arrival The Easter Bunny will be hopping in to Target Court on March 12th at 10:00 am!
