1 hurchbeat THE NEWSLETTER OF THE COLLEGEDALE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH vol. 31 no. 11 May 27, 2015 SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICE SCHEDULE by Pastor Dave Smith THE MISSION of the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church is to bring all people to a saving relationship with Jesus and grow them for God s glory. The worship service schedule for the Collegedale Church will change this June and July. The Church Board recently voted to approve a recommendation from the pastorteam to hold two instead of three worship services beginning June 6 and ending July 25. The first service will meet during the traditional Adoration 2 time (10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.) and the second service will meet during the traditional Renewal time (11:35 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.). Having this schedule should allow all Sabbath School class attendees to attend their regular classes at their regularly scheduled time and yet still be able to attend a worship service. As far as possible, the plan is for both of these services to be the same program, like a simplified Adoration blended service. This change is only for June and July. Before June 6 and After July 25 there will be three worship services at their normal times. The dates and times for this great adventure are June from 9-12 each morning. This ministry is for children ages 4 to 10. A successful climb to the top of the mountain is not possible without guides. We are looking for Expedition Leaders to lead groups of children through the day s activities at this year s VBS. No previous experience is necessary and no preparation is needed. Come experience the privilege of making the Bible and the love of Jesus come to life for our children! You can help them grow in their walk with Jesus. 2 BIBLE IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS by Pastor Ken Norton Recently while attending a luncheon along with other area pastors and Christian businessmen and women, I had to wonder if something I ate was affecting my hearing. Bible classes being taught in the Hamilton County public school system? Can that really happen? Is that even legal? As the presentation unfolded, I was amazed and excited to learn the details about something taking place here in the Southeast Tennessee Valley that is not happening anywhere else in North America. In 1922, Dr. J. P. McCallie, founder of The McCallie School, felt impressed that children in the county public school system needed to have the same opportunity as private school students to study the Bible in dedicated Bible classes. Particular campaign questions should be directed to Pastor Dave (davidsmith@ southern.edu) or Pastor Wolf (Jedamski@southern.edu) or by calling the church office ( ). g a curriculum that taught history from the Bible and approached the Chattanooga City Commission with a proposal: If you will allow Bible history to be taught as an elective in the public school system, we will supply the teachers and the funding to support them. 93 years later Bible in the Schools is a thriving non-profit ministry with 15 fully funded teachers teaching in 19 Hamilton County Public schools. Over 4,000 students elect to take Bible history classes every year and the results have been outstanding. One of the Bible history teachers, David Adels, an Apison Seventh-day Adventist church member, shared this testimony: Several years ago I had a seventh-grade student who was a Goth Halloween rituals, darkness, everything. She took the class again in eight grade And one day she asked if I would go to church with her. So we met at church. We have kept in contact for several years now. She s not a Goth anymore, and she s still going to church. This class is still having an impact on her. During the luncheon, several other teachers from Bible in the Schools shared testimonies of how students lives had been completely changed by attending their Bible history classes and how years later these students had gone on to become strong Christian leaders in their local communities. As I sat listening to their testimonies, I was deeply impressed that in this day and age of growing Bible illiteracy and the devaluation of Christian values, especially among young people, it is refreshing to find of group of Christians who are actively pushing against the tide of atheism and secularism that is sweeping across this nation. As the Pastor of Outreach and Evangelism, I support the work that Bible in the Schools is doing, especially after learning that many of our own Collegedale Church families have children who, for various reasons, are attending one of these Hamilton County schools. When there is a thriving and healthy Adventist school system nearby as we have here in Collegedale, it is sometimes easy to forget about the great mission field right next to us in our county schools where we can be active in helping young people learn about the truths of the Bible and find a relationship with their Creator and Savior. If you are interested in learning more about Bible in the Schools and seeing how you might be involved in this ministry, please contact me. Ministries like these help our children to know God better and are also instrumental in affecting the lives of community children who are struggling to find meaning in the Christ-less culture they are growing up in. 3 EARLITEEN SABBATH SCHOOL MAKEOVER by Pastor William Hurtado On May 16 the Earliteen Sabbath School met in their new location, the Activity Room. Juniors is permanently swapping rooms with Earliteens. With this swap comes an opportunity to reshape the program of the class. With the bigger meeting space, we can focus on active learning experiences, which is in line with Earliteen developmental needs. Here is the program plan in four simple parts: 10:00 a.m. Check-In 10:15 a.m. Music & Inspirational Thoughts led out by a student praise group and an adult. 10:30 a.m. Group Initiatives To build skills like communication, team-work, and leadership. 10:45 a.m. Student-led Study Guide a. Simple inductive Bible study games b. Students read one verse at a time. c. They pick one question from the game box and answer it. With this makeover comes an Earliteen new ministry team composed of existing and new members. Will you join consider joining this new team? We need: 1. Check-in Coordinator a. Signs students in. b.
